IntroductionWhen it first came out in 2007, Cory in the House was one of the most critically acclaimed animes of all time. It had an all-star cast with incredible acting with a very deep and interesting plot. Shows today look back on it in amazement, barely believing that such a well-made show could exist. However, the show was short-lived due to the main actor, Kyle Massey, being picked by The Great One himself and ascending into heaven to become the Angel of Annihilation after the second season was finished. For the legacy to live on forever, a video game was created to preserve the TV show.
Graphics - 10Never have I seen graphics more realistic than this. The fact that they pulled this off on a DS game, the most pixelly game system of all time, just astounds me. Though don't take my word for it,
see for yourself! They truly captured the "essence of real life" with these graphics. It's hard to imagine that this game isn't just a whole bunch of live-action cutscenes!
Sound - 10One of the most loved characteristics of the original Cory in the House anime was the catchy theme song. Parents everywhere were drowning in their children singing the lyrics until the parents themselves started singing too. What really captured my heart is the fact that the theme song
is in the video game! And it sounds just like the original too! That's pretty much the only song that plays the whole game though so I have to rate the sound a 9.5. WHICH ROUNDS UP TO 10
Addictiveness - 10This game really captured me for a couple months. My family was worried sick about me. I could not do anything but play this game nonstop. I left my room once to go to the bathroom, but I brought my DS with me so I could do the ol' play-n-pee. It got to the point where my mom called an authority to come pry me out of my room, but he quickly stopped when I showed him the game. Then he immediately left and bought the game himself! The fun never ends in this game, it really doesn't. You can talk to people, you can look underneath couches for money, you can even talk smack to your teacher! It's so realistic that you find yourself captured by it. You'll find it so hard to put it down that I seriously recommend starting your playthrough in a shelter with a massive supply of food next to you so you never have to move more than 3 feet.
Story - 10
The story in the anime was one of the most beautiful and powerful stories ever told. You find yourself crying one scene, then Cory the Busta busts a joke and you're laughing your head off! Thankfully, the story lives on in the video game, and it's just as enthralling! To keep it brief without any spoilers, the basic outline of the story is that Cory Baxter, the First Kid, wins 1st place in the Wacky Toys Contest by making a bobblehead of his dad. Tourists and important people from all around the world are coming to see Cory's presentation on his homemade toy. In the game you have to set up and prepare yourself to present the toy. If I said anymore it would ruin the heartbreaking moments and the inspiring elements it gives.
Depth - 10While the actual game doesn't take super long, it has infinite replayability. Once you beat it you can play it again and remember everything and it's still incredibly fun! It feels like a new experience each time. On your first playthrough you can go up and right to the door, and on your second you can switch things up and go right then up to the door! The amount of choices the developers gave the gamer is incredible.
Difficulty - 10Now, at first glance the game seems super easy. But what I did after my 43rd playthrough was blindfold myself and burn the skin off of my fingers so I can't feel what buttons I was pressing. The game becamely insanely difficult after that. One thing I loved was the fact that it can be any difficulty you choose, 1-10.
Overall - 10Overall, Cory in the House for the Nintendo DS could possibly be the greatest game of all time. I typically do not give games a perfect 10, but this game is unbelievably well made. It has a touching, compelling story that sometimes will bring you to tears and sometimes will make you laugh for 5 minutes straight. It has some of the most realistic graphics I've ever seen, capturing Cory's true beauty. Even the music is incredible and gets stuck in your head so hard that you can't hear anything but the MIDI trumpet noises. But most importantly, the gameplay is enthralling and incredibly entertaining. Anyone could play it hours, days, even weeks on end and never get tired of it. This is why I give Cory in the House a perfect 10. Never have I played a game so amazing before.
