This is something I realized just a few days ago. There's a 56% chance that with the remaining teams in the playoffs, we could have a repeat Super Bowl.

Here's all the teams that are left and the combinations that are possible along with which combination has been a Super Bowl. The teams on the left are AFC teams and the teams on the right are NFC teams, just keep that in mind since AFC cannot play against AFC in the Super Bowl and same goes for NFC.

Patriots vs Packers = Super Bowl XXXI (1997)
Patriots vs Panthers = Super Bowl XXXVII (2004)
Patriots vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XLIX (2015)
Patriots vs Cardinals

Chiefs vs Packers = Super Bowl I (1967)
Chiefs vs Panthers
Chiefs vs Seahawks
Chiefs vs Cardinals

Steelers vs Packers = Super Bowl XLV (2011)
Steelers vs Panthers
Steelers vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XL (2006)
Steelers vs Cardinals = Super Bowl XLII (2009)

Broncos vs Packers = Super Bowl XXXII (1998)
Broncos vs Panthers
Broncos vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XLVIII (2014)
Broncos vs Cardinals

So there's 16 possible Super Bowl combinations and 9 of them would be repeat Super Bowls which means the odds of having a repeat Super Bowl are more than 50% which is probably the highest ratio at this point of the playoffs ever. Now this isn't that big of a deal because we've a few repeat Super Bowls before but it's kinda neat to see. Plus, a lot of these potential repeat Super Bowls would be repeats of Super Bowls which have only taken place in the past decade which means some former players of those Super Bowls could still be involved.

It's also worth pointing out that if the Packers get into the Super Bowl, then a repeat is guaranteed since the Packers have had a Super Bowl with every team in the opposite conference among the remaining teams.

As long as the Super Bowl rematch doesn't involve the Steelers in any way, I'd be fine with seeing a Super Bowl rematch of some kind.

It wouldn't matter, I don't want the Steelers going to the Super Bowl. I hope they get pummeled by the Broncos like I think they will.

There's some serious flaws in the math, Davideo.

You're giving an even chance for the Chiefs to advance to, and win, the AFC.  The odds of that happening are so unlikely, you can take away any potential KC match-ups with any other team in the Superbowl.

Now, let's redo the math.

It's 8 of 12.  I went to public school so I'm no math wiz but that's better than 56%.  I think it's likely we'll see something has happened in the past but the teams are different, the coaching is different, and the game will be different, even if most of those appearances are recent.  I'm looking at you, Seattle and Pete Carroll.

That looks pretty cool and it would be amazing if we could have a rematch of what happened last year but personally I prefer to see a rematch of 2014 with the Broncos playing the Seahawks.

This is interesting. I honestly would find it cool if they had a repeat Super Bowl, although since this is the 50th Super Bowl, I guess I would be slightly disappointed. I would rather see 2 new match-ups instead of a match-up that had already happened in the past.

I think that there is a very realistic chance to get a Super Bowl rematch from last year, let alone so many years ago. Right now I'm predicting that the Seahawks beat the Panthers and the Cardinals beat the Packers in the NFC, and the Steelers beat the Broncos ( even though they won't have Antonio Brown or DeAngelo Williams ) and the Patriots beat the Chiefs in the AFC. Then I have the Patriots winning the AFC and the Cardinals winning the NFC.

However, I think there is a chance for me to be wrong ( I know right, impossible ) but the Seahawks could win the NFC for the 3rd year in a row and have a rematch against the Patriots. Even though that would be the most interesting matchup from the teams left, I still have a lot of confidence in their being a Patriots/Cardinals meeting in Super Bowl 50.

Okay, for gamerforlifeforever2, I say "Bring It ON!" I want the Steelers to be in the Super Bowl so badly  that I will probably cry if they don't. But I love me some friendly competition so I am throwing a zinger at gamerforlifeforever2. I don't know how to summon, so could someone please summon him for me?
Anyway, that is very amusing to think of the possibility of a Round 2, Super Bowl. It's like if the team who won the first time wins again, they will be total bad-"a word"-s, but if the other team wins, the odds will be even, and the two teams will be rivals until they can settle the score with another Super Bowl. Or at least I will enjoy pretending that it is that way. Also, I am a mathematician, so I love learning about interesting facts that have to deal with numbers. Thank you for making my day more interesting Mr. Davideo7.

Well with the patriots and cardinals winning, things are a bit different now, by eliminating those 3 Packer matchups that would have been repeats, the odds of having a repeat are even bigger now. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if its the patriots and Seahawks again.

I've said this since the Wild Card round ended, I believe that the Broncos and Panthers will be in Super Bowl 50. Their games this round will be starting soon, so it'll be interesting to see if they both move one step closer to the Super Bowl or not.

zanderlex : Well here's how things look now:

Patriots vs Panthers = Super Bowl XXXVII (2004)
Patriots vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XLIX (2015)
Patriots vs Cardinals

Steelers vs Panthers
Steelers vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XL (2006)
Steelers vs Cardinals = Super Bowl XLII (2009)

Broncos vs Panthers
Broncos vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XLVIII (2014)
Broncos vs Cardinals

So now it looks like the odds are 55% at the moment which is actually slightly less. My predictions for Sunday is that the Broncos and Seahawks will win and if that does happen, then the odds get narrowed down to a 50% chance of repeat. Both potential repeats would be of very recent Super Bowls which would be more interesting, especially since it'd be a lot of the same players. Here's what that'd look like if the Broncos and Seahawks win tomorrow:

Patriots vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XLIX (2015)
Patriots vs Cardinals

Broncos vs Seahawks = Super Bowl XLVIII (2014)

legacyme3 : You and me both, I don't want the Patriots to win the Super Bowl or even attend the Super Bowl. Like I said, I hate the Patriots. I nearly gave up football when they "won" last year.

For me, I have predicted Steelers vs Panthers at Super Bowl 50 with Pittsburgh winning it, but by my recent luck, this won't happen.

With the Steelers and Seahawks getting eliminated on Sunday, here's what the potential Super Bowl rematch looks like now:

Patriots vs Panthers = Super Bowl XXXVII (2004)
Patriots vs Cardinals

Broncos vs Panthers
Broncos vs Cardinals

So now we're at an only 25% chance of a repeat and that repeat happened long enough ago where the only returning player is probably Tom Brady.

Speaking of repeats, Tom Brady has faced off against Peyton Manning 17 times in their careers with Brady winning 11 of those matches. They've also faced off I think 4 times in the AFC Championship so this will definitely be a repeat AFC Championship between those 2 but I'm not so sure if it's a repeat AFC Championship with those 2 teams.

Not the patriots  not the patriots  not the patriots  not the patriots  not the patriots.

Anyone except those cheaters.

I kinda wanted a rematch of super bowl 1, that would have been really cool.

I actually could have watched Peyton take on that Seattle team again, but that's not happening.
