Sonic Heroes... my first ever Sonic the Hedgehog game, and a decent one to start with. It was in that genuine era, the early 3d Sonics. We had the first Sonic Adventure, the legacy continued with Sonic Adventure 2, and then there was this. But after that was Shadow the Hedgehog... and 06, Secret Rings, Unleashed, Lost World, and of course... BOOM. Sonic changed... but if you ask me this is as accurate to middle-aged sonic as it gets. We got Sonic in some stage between classic and modern (not counting Boom...), Tails has the... voice of Dora the Explorer? And in cutscenes everyone's mouth looks weird... ok this game is a bit more on the quirky side. But I liked it, mainly for nostalgia, and if you like Sonic Adventure, this is very much the same with a few twists from earlier games back on the old Sega consoles. How you may ask? Let's take a look.

GRAPHICS: 5

Now for the most part it looks fine, the in-game models all look like they are in Sonic Adventure. The game environment looks pretty most of the time, but the problem I have with the graphics are in the cutscenes... it has that early PlayStation feel where it's like they're trying to make it look real but it just looks really odd. Mainly whenever anyone talks and their mouth morphs all over the place. It looks like some kind of clay-motion. Sorry, but I had no problem with the Adventure cutscenes looking like the game itself, and keep in mind this is also a GameCube game, and on the same GameCube we got the cutscenes of Shadow the Hedgehog which looked amazing. Sorry, but while I appreciate the effort, you shouldn't try submitting something you can't pull off well... meanwhile in the years 2006 and 2014...

SOUND: 9

If there's anything we can look forward to in a Sonic game it's the music. That went on for a long time, and it holds true here. The stages have the usual upbeat vibe of any other game, and makes you feel good. The track of seaside hill is so addicting to listen to, it'll get stuck in your head if you think about it too long. Casino Park is really feel-good and happy, Rail Canyon is more hardcore, and so on. But the best of the sound is in the multiple themes made for the game. We have the Crush 40 tracks for the opening and main theme... aptly titled Sonic Heroes, and each team has their own respective theme as well. They all sound amazing, and you should check the OST out. (official sound track)

ADDICTIVENESS: 7

This game plays like 2 specific sonic games... Sonic Adventure, and an under heard game that sparked the beginning of Team Chaotix, Knuckles Chaotix. Now many of you know how a 3d sonic game plays, with fast speed along a set of paths, many secrets scattered along, and obstacles to surpass. But how does this game relate to Knuckles Chaotix? Knuckles Chaotix is a game, of course, mainly starring Knuckles, Sonic isn't in the game, so it's no wonder that it isn't often heard of. But there's also 4 members of Team Chaotix... yeah, 4, only 3 of them are around nowadays. They were Mighty the Armadillo, a Sonic clone who ironically makes more sense ability-wise than a hedgehog... Victor the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon, and Charmy the Bee. You would get a chance to pick one character and a second side character to accompany you, and using a cool ring link system you could get in formations and use each others abilities to get through areas. It's very reminiscent of Sonic Heroes, as each team has 3 members, a speed character, strength character, and flying character, whom you could organize in different ways to progress the stage and attack enemies. There's even a level up system to upgrade each formation twice per life, making them stronger. I like the unique style they went for while remaining true to the original methods of Sonic, and the stages are much the same. You won't get bored soon playing this one, well unless you hate Sonic as a whole... THANK YOU 2006 AND BOOM.

STORY: 5

Quite honestly this story is all over the place. On Sonic Team, the story has the same depth as a kiddie pool. Sonic is auditioning for the Roadrunner in a random desert, and Tails and Knuckles catch up with him on plain delivering a letter: Dear Sonic. I'm taking over the world again, come stop me. XOXO, Dr. Eggman. So they team up and run off to find Eggman, end of. Team Dark is more in depth. Rouge the Bat snuck into a research lab of Dr. Eggman, thinking there was valuable treasure inside, only to find Shadow the Hedgehog in a vat of liquid even though he supposedly died from the last game... umm spoilers? Honestly I'm pretty sure that doesn't matter anymore, anyways awakening Shadow got the attention of E-123 Omega, a rebellious destructive robot that went against Eggman for trapping him down to guard Shadow. Once Rouge stops the fighting and sorts things out, she decides she can use them to get to Eggmans stache... err, stash, in return helping Shadow retrieve his memories and letting Omega wreck Eggmans plans. Team Rose believes that Sonic kidnapped Chocola, one of Cream the Rabbit's chao, Cheese's, chaos friends, and Big the Cat's beloved senpai, Froggy. So Ami gets them together to hunt him down... cause y'know... Sonic. Finally, detective Team Chaotix gets a job request from a mysterious man/woman(?) who requests them to perform missions for him/her in exchange for a big reward, mainly involving messing with apparent rival, Dr. Eggman. Of course the teams will overlap with each other at various points, making for unique boss fights, and there are a couple plot twists here and there that make the story better, but generally it's as much a story as Sonic games can handle, it isn't any Final Fantasy or anything, but it's good enough to have a plot.

DEPTH: 8

This game has 4 unique teams with 3 characters that may or may not have unique abilities from others of their kind. For instance, Amy has her hammer attacks, and Espio can become invisible, and Knuckles uses teammates as punching gloves (wait what!?) and Big the Cat has an umbrella and... exploding fishing pole!?!? THAT'S AMAZING!!! *ahem* As mentioned before, the stages have many secrets within them, such as keys to unlock a special bonus stage for each world letting a team get a chaos emerald, and if at least all 7 unique emeralds are gathered between all 4 teams it does something even more special to look forward to getting. The levels aren't completely the same either, there may be the same parts here and there, but no two levels are the same, and basically the teams have a general preference. Team Sonic is normal difficulty, Team Rose is easy, Team Dark is hard, and Team Chaotix has mission based levels, which may or may not suck... (ps, hope you like collecting around 200 rings in the casino when getting hit by anything makes you lose all of them) There's also time trials if you want high scores, and there may have been a 2 player versus mode, but I don't remember. There's much to do, and it makes the game addicting, honestly I feel like the depth and addictiveness go hand in hand, maybe replace addictiveness with gameplay mechanics or something?

DIFFICULTY: 6

This is a hard one for me as my personal experience with the game was tough. I had this game on my ps2, which was like my 5 year old birthday gift, and I probably got the game like a year and a half or 2 later. I used to SUCK at this game, but overtime the parts I had difficulty with were overcome and I could progress through the game. Now I don't know if I suck at this game or I'm average, so who really knows. There are annoying parts I've ran into, like Rail Canyon and this one part in the Power Plant stage where there's a room you have to climb with lava rising that feels like it must be performed with sniper accuracy. Often I find myself at the mercy of controls, sometimes they feel a bit jerky, maybe I just expect more momentum, but often you can turn at a perfect 90 degrees or just lose all your momentum. And of course, like any Sonic game, there's the occasional glitchyness. One time in Frog Forest (FROGGY!?!?) I was reaching the end when all of a sudden I somehow got launched off a far distance. Believe it or not, I landed somewhere where I could continue. When I regained my bearings, I saw I was near the first checkpoint, and had to go through the level all over again. There are other generally glitchy areas, like the end of the Ocean Palace running from large stone wheels, and the pre-mentioned lava section in the power plant where you miss a target, but overall it takes patience to get the hang of the game. Maybe that's a bad thing, or maybe it's good learning curve, either way the game never feels broken, maybe a bit rugged here and there, but overall it's a good game.

OVERALL: 7.7

This is an honest classic 3d Sonic title, you can pick up, play, and have a good time. Thank you for reading all this, see ya on the next one!

Nice review.

I actually got this game for my nephew last Christmas, and we both thought it was decent, but we also both ended up getting stuck. So yeah...Bye bye Sonic, you now sit on a shelf because five year old patience isn't a thing, and I'm not a fan.

But I agree with everything here except the graphics because I thought the game looked beautiful, but then I didn't get past the third or fourth area, so you've seen far more of the graphics than I have.

Anyway, good job on the review. I hope we see more from you in the future!
