Tekken Dark Resurrection was made in 2005 for the PS3 as a downloadable Japan game, It was an update to the original Tekken 5 game for the PS2 Featuring some pretty drastic changes in the Graphics, Sound, and Music compartment. The PSP version was released one year later, this is actually the 3rd Tekken game released for a portable handheld system. (The First two being: Tekken Card Challenge for the Game boy, and Tekken Advance for the Gameboy Advance)
Lets see how this version compares to the original and what they've changed.
Graphics: 10/10 The eye-candy really shows here, this game looks great especially for the PSP. The sprites look as good as their PS2 counterpart, and the animations from Marshall Law doing his Spin-Kicks to Kazuya doing his almighty Electric-Wind-God-Fist(EWGF for short) I also love how they updated the sprites, Jinpachi looks more bad to the bone in here as he went from a demonic type appearance to more of a Hot-Lava- themed appearance. Same thing goes for the background changes, they look really as if how Tekken 5 should've been, with it's dark theme. No texture details or anything to my knowledge has suffered or been blurred during this game's conversion on the PSP when compared to any other PS2 to PSP game, that is a huge plus.
Great job Namco!
Sound 5/10 Pros: The sound effects are nice crisp and clear when compared to the ps2, you hear everything from the opening diagloue to the Voice acted cutscenes, which sound much like their original counterparts. Cons:1) During the opening diagloue, Namco didn't replace the original guy telling the series of events with the newer round announcer, thus this proves that Namco got too lazy or ran out of time to replace him. 2) The soundtrack really sucks in this game. Tekken 5 on the PS2 was known for having memorable tracks such as Dragons Nest and Jinpachi's boss fight theme unfortunately on here this game lacks any memorable music, which breaks the experience of the game quite heavily.
Addictiveness: 10/10 No Gameplay mechanics were touched here. It looks and plays exactly like its original Tekken 5 counterpart, which I prefer because there's no annoying bound system like in Tekken 6. Combos and everything work really fluidly, and very well to that dismay. This is one of the best and most challenging fighting games I've had on the PSP, so with that being said the replayability is pretty high. Your objective in this game is to pick a character through Story Mode, beat your foes, beat your rivals, and then beat the boss. Each character has a different path to follow which helps the games longevity too.
Story: 6/10 The Story is the same as Tekken 5. This game and Tekken 5 Introduced Jinpachi, Heihachi's Father and Kazuya's Grandpa. What happened was Heihachi defeated Jinpachi in order to claim the Mishima Zaibatsu as his own, once he defeated him, Heihachi locked up Jinpachi to die in Honmaru. After the events of Tekken 4, Heihachi was left for dead and his father Jinpachi is now corrupt. Only you can pick a fighter and stop him or else all will be lost.
Depth 10/10: While this game doesn't have the Arcade Versions of the Past Tekken games(Tekken 1 through 3) Like Tekken 5 does, this game still offers good content for you to enjoy. You have Story Battle, Arcade Mode, Gold Rush Mode, Dojo(Tournament) Mode, Online Mutilplayer, and finally there's unlockable modes like Tekken Bowling which is pretty fun. You can also unlock mutilple auras and buy different colors and items to customize the look of your Tekken Fighters.
Difficulty: Depends on your preference. That's right in this game, you can pick a difficulty to work with depending on your skill and knowledge of the fighters. I usually set mine to hard so I can get an exceptional challenge out of it.
Overall: 9.0 If you don't have a PS2, PS3, or Tekken 6 and just want a good fighting game on the go, then Tekken Dark Resurrection is there for you. It's a fair, skilled, and fun fighting game.
