How to Play as Toon Link in SSBU
Toon Link is a character I’ve been talking a lot about recently. I literally just finished a review for Wind Waker HD a few days ago. So my next step was to write a guide for him in SSBU. Toon Link is an amazing character with very good projectiles and all around good attacks. So let’s jump into my guide for the Waker of the Winds, Toon Link.

What Tier/Class is Toon Link?
I’m pretty sure that Toon Link is another all-around character. None of his stats are particularly high but none of them are really low either. Along with that, Toon Link is also a swordfighter, he uses the legendary Master Sword in battle.

Basic Moveset
So Toon Link’s basic moveset is pretty much a bunch of sword swings. His jab is a three-hit sword combo. Side tilt is an forward overhead slash, up tilt is also an overhead slash but aims up more than to the side as you can imagine. The up tilt can be good for juggling at lower percents. Down tilt comes out super fast and can even trip opponents sometimes, which usually follows up nicely with a dash attack. Speaking of which, the dash attack is a forward slash. The side smash is a forward slash which if you input the attack again it delivers a more powerful second slash. You can even wait a little bit before inputting the attack a second time, this can be extremely useful since opponents may drop their shield thinking that the attack is over when it’s not. Up smash is a powerful overhead swing of the sword. Side smash is also very useful for KO. Unlike Link’s up smash, Toon Link only swings his sword once as opposed to three times. Down smash swings the sword at Toon Link’s feet, he attacks one side first and then delivers the second swing to the other side. If the first hit connects with your opponent, it will usually hit them into the second swing. Forward air is a heavy sword swing, very useful for KO-ing opponents off-stage. Back air is a similar sword swing except less powerful and attacking behind Toon Link. Up air is an upward thrust of the sword very useful for KO-ing opponents. Down air is a downward thrust which sends Toon Link plummeting toward the stage as if he’s stone Kirby. This attack will meteor smash so use it if you’re feeling risky. A safer option is using it at the edge of the stage since it will usually KO opponents that way too, just as long as they’re off the stage and you’re not. Or if they’re hanging on the edge for too long, they will lose their invincibility and then you can hit them with it. It will also poke through platforms on some stages. Toon Link’s grab is larger than most fighters since he uses the hookshot to grab his opponents, so Toon Link can stand farther back when attempting to grab opponents. However there is a downside, if you miss you’re left wide open so be extremely careful when going for a grab. However, Toon Link’s throws are pretty good. When grabbed, Toon Link’s opponent’s will be hit repeatedly by the Master Sword. His forward throw is an attack which Toon Link charges into the grabbed opponent, knocking him forward. It’s not too powerful so don’t rely on it to KO anyone. But it can set up for some potential combos. Down throw is an attack in which Toon Link puts his enemy on the ground and falls on him, at least that’s what it looks like is happening. I’m not entirely sure what that’s supposed to be but, down thrown is not really good for KO and it’s very hard to follow up with anything at higher percents. Up throw is an attack in which Toon Link throws his enemy upward and hits them with the sword. This is also very hard to follow up with anything, but if you can throw a bomb up before the grab, your opponent will hit the bomb on the way up, as long as it doesn’t hit you first. Back throw is good for KO at higher percents, otherwise you can’t combo it into anything really.

Special Moveset
Toon Link’s special moveset is mostly projectiles. His neutral special is the bow and arrow, which fly really straight, like really straight. You might be able to mess up your opponents recovery if they’re level with you and the stage. Otherwise, you won’t really use this much, you will normally want to stick to your other projectiles. Such as the side special, the boomerang. The boomerang will return to you after you’ve thrown it. If it hits an enemy on the way out it will fly back immediately. However, if it’s already on the way back, it will go straight through opponents. You can throw the boomerang diagonally as well, but not straight up or down. This can also ruin your opponents recovery, and do it better than the bow since it doesn’t need to be charged and can be thrown diagonally. It can also set up potential combos since it doesn’t knock opponents very far on it’s way back, but it will almost stop them in place, allowing you to deliver another attack, most likely an up air. However, if you fail to catch the boomerang you won’t be able to use it for a few seconds. But if the boomerang disappears because of another player attacking it, you will not have to wait. The up special, which is the famous spin attack, is a very useful recovery move and attack. Unlike Link’s spin attack it will “absorb” opponents and rack up damage on them better. Link’s spin attack simply knocks opponents away. With heavier characters like Bowser, it’s easier to combo down air into a spin attack. Believe me, it works better than you’d think. The spin attack can also be charged by hold down the input, a charged spin attack will do more damage. And now for the best special attack ever, Toon Link’s down special, bombs. Bombs are so incredibly useful it’s not even funny. They set up combos very well, and they allow you to space yourself from your opponent. You can take out as many as you want, there is no limit to how many bombs can be on the stage. Throw some up, throw some left, right, throw them everywhere, they get the job done. Some people might call this projectile spam, and to some degree it is, but it is also a good strategy if you know what you’re doing. Bombs can be helpful for edge-guarding as well, you can throw a bomb up at the ledge in case your opponent wants to recover high or low. You can even throw a bomb upwards while offstage to set up a way to KO your opponent. If the bomb hits them while they are performing an up special, the explosion will not send them flying upwards like it normally would. It really tricks up and confuses your opponent. It’s also really hard to pull off, I’ve only ever done it twice and both were an accident. But it’s really satisfying and disrespectful, and it’s sure to make your opponent quit.

Custom Movesets
Toon Link’s custom movesets can be useful if you know what you’re doing with them. First off the bow. Custom 1 is the fire arrows. It does less damage but has blaze damage for some loss in range. Excuse me, did I say some? Because I meant a lot. The range on this is so ridiculously short, it’s nearly impossible to hit somebody with them. Even fully charged it doesn’t even manage to go very far. It could be more useful when on top of a platform, or even for edge-guarding since it can get opponent’s close to the edge of the stage. But for the most part, I’d rather stick with my regular arrows, which I don’t even use that much. Custom 2 is the piercing bow, it will go through opponents for a loss in range and damage. I’ve never seen this move in action so I can’t say much about it. However, I would prefer the regular Hero’s Bow. Up next we have the side special, boomerang. Custom 1 is the floaty boomerang. This move tosses a boomerang that’s very slow to return and can be angled, but not by much. It disappears if it hits an opponent on the way back but the game doesn’t tell you that Toon Link can throw another boomerang immediately after this. Custom 2 is the High-speed boomerang. This custom move allows the boomerang to go through opponents on the way out. It flies very fast but can not angle while returning. It takes longer to fire as well. I prefer the original boomerang, but the boomerang you want to use highly depends on your playstyle. Next is the up special, the spin attack. Custom 1 is the sliding spin attack. On the ground, it takes longer to start the move and Toon Link dashes forward while spinning. In the air, Toon Link will move more horizontally than vertically. This custom is of course based off of the Hurricane Spin from Wind Waker. Custom 2 is the flying spin attack. The flying spin attack starts out with a few spins that don’t give much vertical distance but then Toon Link flies upward, very good for KO. However, this leaves you open more than the default spin attack. Why? Because you’re up in the air and you can’t do anything. You also can’t get much horizontal distance out of this attack since you can’t move while Toon Link is flying upward and the spins before the flying slash barely move you anywhere. You have to rely on floating to get back to the edge. I prefer the default spin attack. Next is the down special, bombs. Custom 2 is time bombs. These bombs are very small and can only explode after the time limit runs out. However the bombs can KO around 100%. Custom 2 is short-fused bomb which of course has a shorter fuse than the other bombs. It KO’s easier and sends opponents upward, it’s also useful because if Toon Link’s bomb explodes while he’s holding after he’s used his special move, he’ll be able to use it again. I prefer the default bombs for combo set ups.

Final Smash

Toon Link’s final smash is the same as it was in Brawl, the Triforce Slash. The Triforce Slash, which is also Link’s final smash, will trap fighters in the attack when they are in front of Toon Link. It has range so don’t be afraid to use it from far away, but not too far. Link’s final smash can reach the end of final destination but Toon Link’s range is a little shorter. So be careful!
Unique Aspects About Toon Link
Toon Link is another character who can wall jump. It’s useful for recovering when you’re really low down below the stage.

That Finishes This Up

Thank you for reading this, if I missed anything please tell me and I will be sure to add it in somewhere. I hope to see these techniques put to good use. Thank you very much!

This is a very thorough guide of the character, which you really seem to love! However be careful; I have heard many times that guides should be presented as one rather than with separate pieces. Should you make another guide for the game, consider putting all the characters / tips and tricks, however long it may be.

janus : Hey, thanks again. And yeah, I guess you could say I've been a little over-obsessed with Toon Link lately.
I actually prefer to present these guides separately because if one were to want to learn about a certain character, they can simply select the guide for that character.
I'm not saying that the all-in-one method is a bad idea, but I just prefer to do it this way. Besides I'm not sure if I will write a guide for a character for a while.

I was merely referring to this thread: https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=86449. I guess the moderators would be the ultimate judges, but I think your model might pass the test. It is not a split per say since you merely focus on a particular character.
