Did your favorite baseball team miss the playoffs? Do you have baseball fever already? Well you can play through an entire season with MLB 2005. MLB 2005 is one of the last video games made for the first Play Station. The game was released in late spring early summer 2004.

Plot: 6

Its the start of the 2004 baseball season. So the plot is to build your team up and try to get to the play offs and the World Series. You can build your team up by drafting, trading, or creating players. The goal is still the same play through an entire season and get into the post season. It should be noted the stats are from the 2003 season. So will you be able to get your team into the post season?

Okay this is your basic sport game plot. Nothing real special here. I mean there is no Dr Wily or Sigma to hunt down as in the Mega Man franchise. No Bowser or King K. Rool to go after in Mario and Donkey Kong games. So the plot does not deserve a high rating like those games. Still, the plot is pretty basic. The goal is to get your favorite team to the post season by playing through an entire baseball season. You can do this by several different ways. So that deserves some credit. It does show creativity because you can draft, create players or trade. Therefore, I give the plot a 6 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 7

MLB 2005 has good graphics. The stadiums look like they do in real life, the players are pretty close to how they look in real life, and the people in the stadiums look like real people. I also like  how the clouds and sky look. The sprites are also good. However, unlike previous MLB games the graphics did have a few issues. There is some times in the game when it can become glitchy. The boxes around the player's photos, team logos, and game options can vanish. In some cases the team's logos will even vanish. I first thought it might be my emulator. So I played the game on my Play Station. When playing the game on the play station the logo's did not vanish but they went haywire. I have to wonder if this game was not rushed. This was one of the last Play Station One games and the PS 1 was way past its peak. So part of me thinks they tried to get this game out before the PS 1 bite the dust.

The controls are pretty good. But it seems they took a slight step back from MLB 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. At times it appears the controls can get sluggish at times. In the previous games it was just the game reflecting on the players run speed. In this game everybody runs the same it seems. Other than that though the controls are pretty decent. The pitching controls are still very good as well as the throwing controls. The Batting controls are just as good as the previous games. Despite the flaws the graphics and controls are still decent enought that I give them a 7 out of 10.

Sound: 9

The game really shines in the sound department. MLB 2005 has the solid sound the previous 5 MLB games had. Vin Scully and Dave Campbell sound like they do in real life. The umpires sound is very good. I also like the popping or cracking sound the game makes when a home run is hit. It lets you know you have hit a home run or given up one. The music in this game is also pretty good. The intro music seems to fit the game pretty well. I do not have really any issues with the sound in this game. It seems like it maintained the feel of MLB 2001,2002 and 2003 which had very good sound. So I give the sound a 9 out of 10

Replay Value: 7

I got this game in 2004 when it came out. I was eager to play it. MLB 2005 despite its flaws is still a fun game to play. I played this game several times. However, I find myself going back to this one the least. Its mainly cause of the glitches. I often play MLB 2000-2003 more then this one. With that being said I still play this one often just not as much as the previous games. This game is fun you can draft, create players, trade players, play through spring training, and play through a regular season. I give the replay value a 7 out of 10.

Depth: 9

MLB 2005 fixed the problems the previous game had (MLB 2004). In 04 the game's depth took a step back. In that game players did not have as many pitching styles or batting styles to chose from when creating players. Well MLB 2005 fixed that as players can choose several batting styles when creating a player. The game also gives you more pitching styles when creating a pitcher. So they fixed MLB 2004's problems for sure which was good. MLB 2005 maintains the depth 2001-2003 had. You can play through spring training, play through a regular season, draft your team and play in franchise mode. The game gives you several options. The game is long too as you have to play through 160-162 regular season games. The depth in this game is really good and it was nice to see the makers of this game fix the issues 04 had in terms of depth. Thus, I give the depth rating a very good 9  out of 10.

Difficulty: 7

The difficulty was hard to rate for a few reasons. First of all, the stats are base off of 2003 stats. So if your team had a bad season or if your team's players had a bad 2003 season the game reflects that. Teams who had bad seasons are more prone to errors, and giving up runs then decent teams that had good 03 numbers. If your team gave up a lot of runs well the game reflects on that too. Also the bad teams seem to not score as many runs. So that adds to the difficulty. On the other hand the game gives you several options on building your team up. If your team was bad in 2003 you can trade players or create them to make them a good team. Its like the game is helping you out.

Second, the glitches can be a problem sometimes. The main problem is when the boxes around the scores vanish and the team logos get glitchy. This can be confusing at times. It also seems to slow the game down some. So that adds to the difficulty. Also it may seem easy to guide your team into the playoffs. Well its not so easy because they are other teams that are trying to get there too. So you have to go against them just like a regular season in real life.

Still MLB 2005 can be a moderate difficult game. Its not like a Mega Man game but it is not easy either. As they say in baseball its a long season. Well this game its a long season as you have to play over 160 games and beat your team's rivals. Also since the game reflects on your team's 2003 performance it does not make it easier. But as I stated you can get good players or create them to counter that. I give MLB 2005 a 7 out of 10 in terms of difficulty

Overall: 8.3

As I stated MLB 2005 was one of the last Play Station 1 games before the system was discontinued. In fact when this game was coming out it was dubbed the only sports game made for Play Station. Play Station 1 was at its peak from 1998-summer of 2002. After summer in 2002 the play station started to decline. The reason was the newer Play Station II came out around that time. So a lot of games were being made for PSII. By the time this game came out in 2004 PS1 was on the decline and about to bite the dust. It still puzzles me why did they make this game for PS1 when it was about to be discontinued and not make it as a PSII game is beyond me. I do not know what Sony was thinking when releasing this game. I think had this game been developed for PSII it might not have had its problems.

Due to the glitches that occur in this game it makes me think this game was rushed. It seems like Sony tried to  hurry and get this game out before the PS1 was fully replace with the PS2. The logo's vanishing, the boxes around the scoreboard and pictures vanishing shows some sloppiness of the makers of this game. This game should have been much better then it is. I think its safe to say this falls under the category what were they thinking. Sony took a popular game series, released the last title on a dying game system instead of putting it on a new one.

Now for the positives. MLB 2005 did fix a few things from MLB 2004. When creating a player you can chose from several batting styles in the previous game there was very few. When creating a pitcher you have more choices now then you did in 04. You do not have that many choices like you did in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003. But better then the previous game. Another thing this game fixed was home runs counting. In the previous games home runs that were hit would sometimes not count as hits. It would show the player hit a home run and drove in runs but it would not register as a hit. In this game home runs count as hits again.

Also despite this game's flaws it is still a fun game to play. As I stated several times you can play through spring training, an entire season, or play in franchise mode. The game offers you several options. Despite this games issues it is still a good one to play. If you do not mind the boxes vanishing your probably not going to find any issues with this game.

Overall I think this is a good game even though it took a few steps back from the previous MLB games. But like I said this game you can tell was rushed. This game could have been great and it should have been great if it was released for the PS2. I still though would recommend this game. I still enjoy the game despite the few issues that come up. To some people the glitches would not bother them. If that is you then enjoy this game. Even though I play this one less then the other baseball games I still enjoy this game.  I remember saving my money when this game came out and I'm glad I did. I had fun playing this game, and it did fix some of the problems from the previous MLB game. It is just a shame this game had some glitches of its own. I would say this game is on the same level as MLB 2004.  Still a solid game but takes a step back from the games of 2000-2003.  As such as I give this game a solid rating of 8.3. If you play this game I hope the issues do not bother you and you get to enjoy one of the last PS1 games.

Wow, I never thought there could be so much to be said about baseball games! But you did it very well with excellent structure, lots of details and even "heavy" comparisons with other similar games to show the improvements (or worsening). High 5!

I think you did a great job with this review. Those kind of games look more and more rushed as the years pass by, and with each installment, less new features are put in and thus, the game suffers. Anyways, it's good you decided to review one of the last PS1 games. Keep up the good work.
