Let's-a-get building! Super Mario Maker is a fairly recent game at the time I write this. But after playing it, I realized it was my destiny to review it!
Super Mario Maker was a game I didn't expect from Nintendo. A way to make your own levels instead of a ton of pre-made ones tied together with a map screen and story. I originally had low expectations for the game until E3, when they showed that you could make more than Super Mario Bros. levels. In addition to that game you can have levels for Super Mario 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. Each play like their respective games. Sounds interesting right? Well if you ask me it is!

Graphics: 6/10
The graphics are an odd thing to go through here. You'll notice the high quality artwork. But that's not how the game looks. You'll see them in the starting screen though. From there on, the game's graphics perfectly match the game the level you are making, or playing, is based on. The simplistic Super Mario Bros, the somewhat more detailed Mario Bros 3, the 16-bit Mario World, or the HD New Super Mario Bros. And all items, enemies, and Mario change design to whatever is being used.
There is only one background for each level version you choose as well. You can pick a Ground, Underground, Underwater, Castle, Ghost House, or Airship level. And the cool thing is you can pick these for games that didn't feature them! And their design changes to match that of the games too. It's a neat addition.

Addictiveness: 8/10
This game is pretty addictive! Both for making levels and for playing levels others have made. In a way, making a level feels like a game itself. You can get really caught up and invested into your level design. And you can also be determined to finish a course somebody made. And the 10 and 100 Mario challenges only enable that farther. Needless to say this is a very addictive game. Mostly because there are two very different kinds of gameplay. Actual gameplay, and creating levels yourself. It's hard to NOT play this for extended periods of time!

Sound: 9/10
The sound is also very mixed in the same way graphics are. The sounds all shift depending on what game the level is based in, along with what level it is. Each level only has one song for it. But like with graphics, I am very impressed on how they accommodate the music as well as graphics for games that didn't have those levels. For instance, you can make a Airship level based in Super Mario World. With that game's graphics as well as a Mario World styled Battleship theme. You could also have an 8-bit Ghost House if you're feeling extra spooky.
The title screen, and the main menus have their own music too. It's pleasant, if not a little bit forgettable. But one thing I really like is that when placing objects a voice will sing the name of that item along to the tune of the level you're making. It's fun to rapidly throw blocks or goombas everywhere and have the voice sing "block" or "goomba" to the typical Mario tune. Or to the tune of any level you're playing!

Story: 0/10
Nope. No story here. Well, I guess this can be interpreted as Mario slowly going insane. Or something awfully similar to Duck Amuck.

Depth: 8/10

There's a good amount of depth to this game. First of all, there's the fact every sprite for every item changes for each game is impressive enough. But there's a TON of items too! And with almost every item you can place; shaking them with the stylus will change them. And making certain combinations can yield different things too. And with all the combinations, variations, and differences. The fact every amiibo character is an optional skin is neat too. But what's even better is...You don't have to own them to unlock them! Something I kind of wish more games would do. But there are even more costumes than the amiibos. There's a good amount of depth! There's even a hidden minigame if you know what to do. There are also different death sounds that play at random. Playing a really hard level then dying to hear the stock "crashing into everything" sound effect, and the one where Mario falls onto Peach made me burst out laughing!
Sadly the only thing to really do in this game is simply...Make and play custom Mario levels. Well that and the return of a certain minigame. But that's it. It's a nice amount of depth in terms of items, and possibilities. Then a fair amount of depth for hiding the minigame. But the buck stops there. It's a good amount of depth for what the game is. But the depth is outmatched by some other games.

Difficulty: 6/10

The difficulty here is entirely relative. People who submit levels make them with difficulties ranging from really easy, to insanely hard. So the difficulty is a bit tricky to pinpoint. But there are more hard levels than easy. Then there are just plain silly and weird levels. They don't allow you to upload levels unless you have beat them yourself though. That's a feature I genuinely love about this game. But on the account that most levels I've downloaded were fairly difficult.
The controls are really easy. A and B jump, X and Y run. And the left control stick and D pad moves you.Although the mechanics differ from game to game. SMB is nothing special. SMB3 has it's P meter and grabbing and throwing certain enemies. Super Mario World and NSMB U have the Spin Jump and grabbing as well. Only in Mario World can you throw things straight up for whatever reason...But in NSMB U you can wall jump as well. So each game has different techniques as well. Which you can keep in mind when making your own levels difficult. Although there is a certain feature that I love. You can't upload a level that you haven't finished yourself!

Overall this game is pretty interesting. I don't think $60 is a fair price for it though. But it's more like part game and part tool to me. It is like Nintendo's Garry's Mod. It's fun to just mess around with. You can get a good dose of fun times making and playing levels. Although it seems more of a casual game. But not one of those casual games that have a million clones. The game is basically a extremely user friendly, Nintendo Approved, ROM hack maker. It's a game I definitely recommend. But at the same time kinda wish Nintendo would lower the price for.

That's-a-good-reviewa ! You explained everything nicely as usual.

I didn't expect a story mode from this game at all since you just build. I shall buy this game in the future.

You made a good review of the game (no, I did not play it). It is structured well, you give plenty of details and even what to expect depending of the game we are "making." I want to see those 8-bit ghost houses!

Nintendo makes everything so expensive. XD I'm really hoping the price will go down by Christmastime so I can have the game then.

This is an amazing review! You got me even more excited about the game by giving a lot of details and special things about the game. I'm sure I'll be making an 8-bit ghost house right when I get ideas for it, that should be a really cool one. Keep up the great work! I hope I don't explode from all this hype
