EDIT: This thread is now for talking about any books you are reading, not just for school.

We should be far enough into the year where you started reading something for your English class. What are you reading and do you like it so far? For me, this actually happens to be the first time ever I'm reading a non fiction book for English and its called an Anthropologist on Mars, some sort of a neuroscience book and it has some cool stories.

As of right now, I am reading a book called Anthem. It's terrible and I don't get it. Nuff' said.

SpeedishHighway : Ooh, I almost read that and another book by the same author, but that wasn't for class, that was on my own.

SpeedishHighway : Anthem by Ayn Rand? Man, I want to get into your class .

If you do not "get it", it is pretty simple:

Spoiler:

the story is set in a dystopian future where there is no individuality and everything is controlled by an omnipotent government, i.e. communism. That is why the hero talking about him at the first person plural (we) since the first person singular (I) has been banished.

I read an autobiography by a reporter who has myeloma. It was about his fight with the disease and... inspirational stuff. I don't know what to say about it. It was great, but regrettably, not in English and will probably never be.
I was also once told to read a book to some five-graders. It was... "The Day Of Reading Things To Others" or whatever it's called in English, if there's a word for it. I did read a book to some five-graders. "Stranger In A Strange Land" by R. A. Heinlein. Highly interesting. Anyway, I got to read the first few pages. Nobody understood anything.

janus : (Hopefully it will reply to you) My definition-freak senses are tingling. Communism is not a type of government that essentially monitors everything, it's called totalitarianism. Or not, correct me if I'm wrong.

DerAxeEfekt : Actually, for communism to "work" (it can not anyway), there needs to be an absolute control over everything. The slightest bit of freedom will be a nuisance to the proletariat dictatorship trying to spread the wealth around. I can not be otherwise; should there be a dissident voice "the people" will not accept the plan.

Right now my English class has moved away from the Anthropologist book and now we are reading Maus 1 and Maus 2, which are visual novels about the Holocaust by Art Spieglman, and they are pretty good but it's easy to miss stuff because of the images and stuff.

I recently finished reading this book called The 5th Wave, by Rick Yancey. It is a pretty good book. The story is about this girl who must survive in a post-apocalyptic world where aliens, who make themselves look like humans, take over the Earth. The girl has to rescue her brother from this war camp for kids. I would actually recommend reading this book.

I'm about to read that myself because the trailers for the movie interested me.

zanderlex :

We didn't have to read that book. We had this thing in Language Arts where we got a list of 10 books. We got to choose any one of the 10 to read over a certain period of time and then we had to complete two projects about the book. That book was my choice from the list.

zanderlex :

Sorry, I don't remember those. All of them were pretty sad books though. I remember that one was Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, however. In most of the books, there were many characters that died or went through struggles.

I am still trying to finish "Knowledge and Decision" by Thomas Sowell. The content is interesting but so HEAVY! He must be a better orator...

The books we are reading in my English class are the following three:

1)
The Race for What's Left - Michael Klare
   - This book essentially covers how tensions are building around the world as our world is slowly being depleted of it's resources like water (the drying out of aquifers - like how they've dried out in Yemen and Saudi Arabia), natural resources, etc. Due to the depletion of these resources war may very well ensue (as some civil wars already have), and stuff like the race for claiming under water land near Antarctica for future oil drilling use is going on (this is what the book says). This book also intertwines the topic of overpopulation and other issues when talking about the resource problems origin and/or result.

2) World on the Edge - Lester Brown
   - Pretty much the same as the last book, but it also covers other pressing global issues such as global warming.

3) Writing Analytically - David Rosenwasser
   - A book trying to inform the reader on how to write for an academic audience and whatnot.

Currently I'm reading Macbeth for my AP Literature course. I started reading it a week before to get a head start, and I've really enjoyed it thus far. I actually went out to the book store and purchased a sparknotes version of the book and the cool thing is that it has the original text on the left page, and a modern text on the right. This is more than likely the reason I'm able to find more enjoyment in what I am reading because I am able to actually understand what is being said throughout the story.
