Baseball is my favorite of favorite sports. So I remember when I saw Nolan Ryan's baseball at a old video game store. Since it was baseball and had Nolan Ryan's name on it I got it. So today I'm going to be reviewing this game. A tornado warning will need to be issued because this review will contain Tornado rants.

Story: 3

There really is not much here as a story is concerned. Basically its time for baseball. The goal is just to get the other computer team out. That is it folks nothing to see here. I mean this is a sports game and a lot of them do not have much of the way of plots to begin with. However, I expected more out of this. The team in this game is not even a real major league team. Nolan Ryan's team the Texas Rangers is not even in this game. I thought when I picked it up I would be playing as the Rangers or something. The other MLB teams are not referenced. Nolan Ryan is not even in the plot. When you turn the game on it just shows a cut scene. So yeah the plot in this game gets a 3 out of 10.

Graphics & Controls: 8
If anything keeps this game from ranking the lower it is the graphics. The graphics in this game is good. The ball field looks like a ball field. The spectators in the stands look okay. The ball players look okay. The sprites in this game are good. The games colors are also good.

The Controls are good in this game and they are about the only good thing in this game (more on that later). The batters are easy to control. The pitching can be a little sluggish at times. I had a harder time controlling the pitcher more then anything. The pitcher when you control him just feels sluggish. I do not know if that was done intentional or not. So I give the graphics and controls a 8 out of 10.

Sound: 6

Unlike other baseball games such as Play Station's MLB line or EA's Triple play line that have a sound track. Nolan Ryan's baseball does not have much of a soundtrack. I found that shocking because other sports games I have played have had a soundtrack. I do not know why that was not the case here. What little sounds this game has they are decent. The announcer saying strike, safe or home run sounds good. The pow sound it makes when you hit a ball lets you know you have hit the ball so that was a nice touch. The whoosh sound the batters make when they strike out is a bonus sound too. But I kind of expected more out of this game concerning sound. I expected a sound track. But I expected some announcing like other baseball games have. That really brings the sound rating down some. I give the sound a 6 out of 10.

Replay Value and Depth 3

I hate to say this but there really is not a whole lot here. I got this game cause it was a baseball game. I was hoping it might be like other baseball games out there. I was disappointed the ball players are fictional. The pitcher Ryan is the only reference to a real life player. There is not season to play, no extra games like in the Triple Play or MLB Series line for PS1. Its just a game to play. If you win you get to play another game. If your team loses well its game over. Not much to see or do in this game. I was expecting a season to play through not just 1 game. It should be no surprise that I have only played this game a few times. Its just not that good of a game. Other baseball games I have played over and over again but not in this case. The depth as I have stated is non existent in this game. There are no major league teams to chose from, not seasons to play, no franchise mode, or anything like that. I give the replay value and depth a 3 out of 10.

Difficulty: 5

The difficulty in this game is kind of odd. What I mean is it seems like the game is difficult for the wrong reasons. As I mentioned under the control section the pitching can be sluggish. This makes it had to throw a strike at times. It also makes it hard to move the pitcher too when diving for ground balls. The batting is what I would expect from this game. When batting you have to guess how the pitch is going to be thrown to hit it. I kind of like that because that is the type of difficulty this game should have. However, this is not the most difficult spots game out there. If you guess correctly while batting it is easy to hit the ball hard. Also you do have several chances to get runs and get a win. So that brings the difficulty down. I give the difficulty a middle of the road rating. The game can be difficulty while pitching though that is a control issue. Having to guess how a pitch is being thrown is what keeps the difficulty from being low. Its a shame that is the only reason. So 5 out of 10 sounds about right.

Overall 5.2

Okay here comes some tornado rants!!!!. I have played bad games before: Mega Man II for gameboy, Mortal Kombat for Game Boy, and Super Mario Bros for GBA. But I must say this is one of the worst games I have ever played. I hate to say that about a game especially a baseball game but its true.

I got this game cause it had Nolan Ryan on it and it was a baseball game. I learned though that this game was not licensed by Major League Baseball like other baseball games weer. That means no teams could be selected to play from. Nolan Ryan is the only player referenced in this game as the pitcher's last name is Ryan. By not being licensed by MLB really shows in this game. I would have at least though that the Texas Rangers would be referenced in this game. It just seems like the makers of this game just slapped Nolan Ryan's name on a baseball game just to make people buy it. I admit it as I stated that is why I got the game.

Other baseball games such as the Triple Play Line, the MLB line, High heat, and others I have played Tare good games. I was hoping this game would be a lot like those games. But it is not. I mean you don't even get to play through an entire season. You just get to play 1 game if you win you can play another game but if you lose well that is it. The other baseball games you could play more than 1 game in. So what were the makers of this game thinking.

I gave the graphics an 8 out of 10 and they are good. But the pitcher who has Ryan as his last name does not even look like the real one. The players all look similar not a lot of difference in their appearance. But that is due to not being licensed by MLB. So the makes of this game could not use major league baseball player names. That is probably why they could not make Ryan resemble the real Nolan Ryan.

Now they were some good things in this game and that is what keeps me from ranking this lower. The colors were nice in the game and the graphics were okay. The ball field looks like a a real ball field. The spectators look like people watching the game. The sound in the game though that could have been better was not horrible. I like the pow and whoosh sounds that the batters make when they hit the ball or get struck out. That was a nice touch. I also liked that you have to guess on how a pitch is being thrown to hit it was nice and the right difficulty. So despite this games flaws they were some good points to it.

Its just a shame that more good points could not have been included in this game. My personal thoughts were had the makers of this game gotten licensed from Major League Baseball this game would have been awesome. I want to think they could have used real major league players, Ryan could have looked like the real one, they could have used Major League baseball teams. But they didn't so I think they just put together what they had. If Nolan Ryan saw how bad this game was he would probably be outraged.

Overall I give this game a 5.2. The graphics, sound and some of the difficulty keeps this rating from being lower then it is. I hate to say this but there is not just much here to enjoy our out of this game. This game has too many flaws to get enjoyment out of. As I stated its a shame they put Nolan Ryan's name on it just to see copies. So would I recommend this game No Way. If you want to play a good baseball game. I recommend playing MLB 99-2003 for the play station or EA Triple play line also for Play Station. But stay away from this game because you will be disappointed even though it has legend and Hall of Fame Pitcher Nolan Ryan's name on it.

Wow, who knew there was so much to say about a baseball game. And The way you describe it (mindless winning or losing without extras) made me think it was an NES game.

Anyway your review was good. Your structure was good, you gave ample comparisons with other baseball games and plenty of details as to why you hate The game. Have you played that other SNES baseball game that had a regular season but also a home run derby? I can not remember The exact title; how would you compare THAT to Nolan Ryan's Baseball?

janus :

I want to think you might be referring to Ken Griffey's Baseball. It came out at the end of the SNES life I believe. From what I remember it was good. I plan on playing it again and reviewing it.
