On March 31, 1999, the original Roller Coaster Tycoon game was released in North America. The game was such a big hit, that they decided to release the first expansion pack in the series, Corkscrew Follies, which was released on November 15th of the same year. Is this expansion pack worth buying, or is it better to just keep the original and not get the expansion pack? I'll tell you by making this review.
Graphics: 9/10 The graphics for Corkscrew Follies haven't changed at all from the original. Seeing that this is an expansion pack, you can't be too surprised about that. The new rides and attractions are really interesting to look at, especially the vertical drop coaster, which as the name implies, you literally make a vertical drop straight down. Also there's some interesting new scenery that this game offers as well, such as abstract sculptures like a cube, jungle theme which is self explanatory, spooky theme, which is perfect for a haunted portion of your park, and Jurassic theme, which of course is prehistoric. Overall, Corkscrew Follies offers enough interesting scenery and rides to make your parks look more interesting, so I'm giving the graphics a 9.
Sound: 8/10 The soundtrack in Corkscrew Follies is the same as in the original. Each ride still has the great music that guests can listen to while waiting to ride the rides, and the sound effects are just as realistic as RCT without the expansion pack. Since the sound is just as good as RCT, I'm giving the sound an 8.
Addictiveness: 10/10 RCT: Corkscrew Follies is just as addicting as RCT is without the expansion. The fact that you have so much creative freedom and that you can build each park the way you want it made makes RCT: Corkscrew Follies just as incredible to play as the original. When you take into account the new rides, attractions and scenarios that this game has, RCT: Corkscrew Follies has an immense amount of replay value. Since this expansion pack is just as addicting as RCT, I'm giving the addictiveness a 10.
Story: N/A Roller Coaster Tycoon: Corkscrew Follies doesn't have a storyline, therefore I'm leaving this category blank.
Depth: 9/10 Roller Coaster Tycoon adds plenty of new scenario's, rides, and attractions to give this expansion pack a lot of extra content for people who can't get enough of Roller Coaster Tycoon. There's a total of 30 new scenario's that Corkscrew Follies brings to the table (32 if you count the 2 extras that need to be downloaded). When you add those to the original 22 scenarios, you get over 50 scenarios that you can complete. With all of this incredible content, you'll be playing this game for hours and hours on end. While there are more scenario's added from this expansion pack, I'm still giving the depth score a 9 because there's another expansion pack that added even more content to the RCT experience.
Difficulty: 4/10 Corkscrew Follies has pretty much the same difficulty level as RCT. The objectives for each scenario in Corkscrew Follies have pretty much the same concept as the ones from RCT, some objectives are to have a certain amount of guests in your park by a certain month or year or to achieve a certain park value by a specific year. These objectives aren't too difficult to complete as long as you've got a good idea of how to build your park and make it enjoyable enough for your guests to where they'll want to stick around. Overall, Corkscrew Follies' difficulty deserves a 4.
Overall Score: 9/10 Roller Coaster Tycoon: Corkscrew Follies is a very worthy first expansion pack to Roller Coaster Tycoon. With some new rides, plenty of new scenarios, new scenery, and equally addicting gameplay to what RCT has, this is an expansion pack that should be played by all Roller Coaster Tycoon fans. I'm giving the overall score of Corkscrew Follies a 9 out of 10. Stay tuned for my Loopy Landscapes review, which has some differences from this expansion pack and RCT itself.
