After the success of their 2010 hit Sonic Colors, Sega wanted to continue their new-found momentum in restoring Sonic's reputation which had been tarnished after the Sonic 06 debacle. The next game they decided to work on was Sonic Generations, the game to help celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary. The game was made for 4 different systems: the PS3, the Xbox 360, PC, and of course, the 3DS version. This version of the game is different from the other 3 versions, as this version was developed by a company called Dimps, while the other versions were developed by Sonic Team, and there are level and music differences as well. How does the 3DS version compare to it's console and PC counterparts? I'll tell you by making this review.

Graphics: 8/10 Sonic Generations for the 3DS has good visuals for an early title on the system. The levels themselves look great, and definitely show just how far visuals have come on handheld systems. Honestly, I think this is the best looking 3DS Sonic game so far, even though it was the first one made for the system. The scenery in each area looks very good for a 3ds game, and shows how far graphics have come in gaming from the Genesis and Dreamcast days. The character models are also really nice to look at as well. Overall, I'm giving the graphics an 8.

Sound: 10/10 As I've said in the past, the Sonic series has some of the best music in video gaming history. Sonic Generations brings back a lot of great music from Sonic's Past and remixes them brilliantly. The 3DS version's soundtrack has a good amount of differences from the console and PC versions. Some of the best music that's exclusive to this version include the Big Arm theme from Sonic 3, which makes great use of the electric guitar, Supporting Me (aka Biolizard theme) from Sonic Adventure 2, and Mushroom Hill Zone from Sonic & Knuckles. With all this incredible remixed Sonic music, the sound category for Sonic Generations 3DS deserves a 10.

Addictiveness: 7/10 The gameplay in Sonic Generations for the 3DS isn't as good as the other versions of the game. One reason for this is because all the levels in the game are mostly in a 2D perspective, while the other versions have 3D levels. This really bothered me, since most Modern Sonic levels have a 3D perspective, so levels like Emerald Coast are a lot different than in the other versions of this game and in Sonic Adventure. Other than that though, Sonic Generations is fun to play. The boss fights are entertaining, and the levels themselves will give you a great feeling of nostalgia. Overall, I give the addictiveness a 7.

Story: 5/10 The story in Sonic Generations 3DS is the same in all versions of the game: Sonic is celebrating his 20th birthday with his friends, when out of the blue, a mysterious creature known as the Time Eater comes and kidnaps all of Sonic's friends, and scatters them through time. After saving Tails, the two eventually meet their past selves, who are referred to as "Classic Sonic" and "Classic Tails". Together, they must save their friends and stop the Time Eater from changing the course of history, which would benefit Dr. Eggman. Overall, this is a pretty decent storyline, especially since this game came out in the year of Sonic's 20th anniversary, 2011. I have seen better storylines though, including from other Sonic games. For these reasons, I'm giving the story a 5.

Depth: 5/10 Sonic Generations doesn't have as many levels as the console and PC versions do. The other versions of the game have 9 levels, while the 3DS version only has 7 levels. Both games have the same amount of bosses (with a few differences), but the fact that there are only 7 levels in this version of the game really hurts it in this category. The levels themselves aren't super long either, so beating the game doesn't take that much time. Overall, I wish that there could've been a few more levels in this game. For these reasons, I'm giving the depth a 5.

Difficulty: 5/10 The game itself isn't super challenging. There were only a few levels that presented a slight challenge, and the boss fights aren't very tough either, especially not the Big Arms boss. Is it one of the easiest Sonic games in existence? No, but there are definitely much tougher games out there, so I'm giving the difficulty a 5.

Overall Score: 7/10 Sonic Generations for the 3DS may not be the definitive version of the game, but I still think it's the best Sonic game you'll find on the 3DS. The soundtrack is full of remixed tracks from previous Sonic games, the graphics are very nice for a 3DS game, and the game's fun to play. The main issues I have with the game are the fact that a vast majority of the game is a 2D platformer rather than 3D and there are less levels on this version than the console and PC versions. If you're planning to buy Sonic Generations, I'd suggest only buying this game if you want a different experience from the other versions. Overall, I give Sonic Generations for the 3DS a 7 out of 10.

This was a mighty good review. Good structure, lots of details and ample comparison with other Sonic games. And all that under 1000 words. Plus your introduction to the game was also solid, putting the Sonic universe into context. A solid 5 for you my friend!
