Breath of Fire guide

Hello gamers and welcome to another of my game guides. Like other turn-based RPGs I will focus on making you move forward and grind your levels when appropriate - although it's not terribly necessary since your dragon powers make you indecently strong. I will also point you towards important treasure chest (equipment, magic stones and herbs in the early game) so you don’t have around endlessly.

Note that in this game, you can avoid fights altogether (except in Mogu’s dream) If you just wait a few seconds before walking into a random fight. Also, enemies attack in cycles; they start attacking high and then slowly decrease until they hit back the start of the cycle. Finally, characters gain strength when their HP gets low; use carefully.

1.          The Warrior of the Dragon

When you gain control search the dresser close to your bed for a V. Ptn (increases vitality). Go downstairs. Talk to the first lady with blue hair, and then to the other one. After a long cut scene open the blue chest for $300. You can come back to that house any time to rest for free. After increasing your level to 4 you should be ready to attack the first dungeon. Just walk northeast of Drogen to reach Camlon.

Dungeon: Camlon

Inside the castle, follow the path (rocks keep you from deviating) to a water fountain that restores life and cures status (P. Bug tend to poison you, so it’s useful). The 2 chests you see as you follow the path both contain $70. Move around another water fountain and follow the path (rocks keep you there) and go downstairs. The first door (opens by pressing A) contains herb and bronze sword, whereas the second one contains herb and gauntlet. Go upstairs, and once again follow the fail-proof path to the next set of stairs. The first door will contain Suede CP (no good for you) and herb, and the second one, herb and visor. Go upstairs and go to the left; the first chest contains a sproing (restores health) and contains antidote, but the second one contains dark mist (lose AP) and an antidote. When you’re ready, go upstairs for your first boss fight.

Boss fight: Frog

It’s straight-forward. Just pummel it until it dies. When its health gets low it tends to cast cure so be careful. Also, since it’s quicker than you, make sure your HP are over 10. The chest contain herb and $150.

Exit the castle and go northeast to Nanai (level 8 should be enough). Note that you can only enter the city at dusk, when guards at the entrance are sleeping (enter the city to test it). However, others are still awaken and will expel you if you get too close. So from the entrance, move left and go around the inn, go behind the hours with a purple roof (you can hug the wall behind), up in a house next to a sleeping soldier (contains 2x$150), down between two columns, around the pub (and a sleeping soldier) and up to Nanai Castle while being at least 3 squares from the awakened soldier.

Dungeon: Nanai

Look at the gate and go down some stairs. Once in the “glowing” area, move down twice and across a rope bridge. Go to the left to get $650. Go back to where you were and go to the far right to get a bolt stone. Go back, up, across two rope bridges and down more stairs. Once down go to the right to get armpad and $70. Go back, down 2 rope bridges and down-left for a fire stone (no, not a tire). Go slightly back up, right (picking the cure, which restores all HP) and follow the path to a large staircase. Once downstairs, go around the stairs to your next boss fight.

Boss fight: Knight

Like Frog, Knight tends to heal at low HP. Since you should be quicker than the boss, don’t worry about keeping your HP too high; but make sure you restore properly! Be warned that he can cast bolt, which causes 20 damage.

After defeating him, retrieve the earth key and escape to the magic circle to the right. Once you gain control, walk back to when Nanai stood and follow the upper cliff, and then walking straight to Winlan. On the second level (next to an incomplete bridge) there is a house with V. Ptn. Enter the castle and talk to the woman in white. She will escort you to bed and you will fall asleep.

2.                      Saving King Winlan

You will now control Nina, the princess of Winlan. Go downstairs and go to the left to get Suede hat and shield, antidote and herb. Exit the castle (you can exit town quicker by going in the water) and go to the cave where you will have to accept the help of two soldiers to proceed.

Dungeon: Cave to Romero

Walk straight and go downstairs. Then go slightly down and to the right to get a cure, and down-right to get a suede gown and $150. Move further up to get iron ore (for later) and $70. Go back to the staircase, go north across 3 rope bridges (there is an herb along the way) and move to the far left (ignoring the stairs for now) to get a bolt stone. Go up the stairs and go left to get cold stone. Exit the cave and go into Romero.

Enter the house with a blue roof northwest of the inn, go down the hole and move the jars around like this: the lowest one to the right, the farthest right up and the upper-left one to the left. You will get the world map by pushing the flat barrel. Take the stairs and re-enter the village. Enter the northwest-most house (with a blue roof) to get ProtnB (increases attack) on the second floor. Exit the village on the left side right next to a pork farm.

Dungeon: Forest to Karma

Walk straight to the left to enter a forest. Walk straight to the left, down-left, down, and down-left some more to get a bandage. Go back to the right and up the second possibility you can, and straight left until you exit the forest. Walk left some more to get into Karma.

Dungeon: Karma

By walking up straight you will encounter 2 healing fountains. Walk to the left and up and take the stairs up to get an M Drop (restores HP to all; also worth a lot of money). Go back down and circle the room to the right to get another M drop. Go back up and go towards the ghost to fight it.

Boss fight: Morte

It’s very straight-forward. Just use your E Key and one or two stones and you should be able to dispose of it in 3-4 rounds.

Go upstairs, go down and take the stairs up to get a cure. Go back down, circle the room to the left and go upstairs. Walk straight, right, downstairs, straight up and down the hole on the right. Go upstairs, upstairs some more and downstairs twice to get a life2. Go back up and go to the right to fight another ghost.

Boss fight: Mortea

It’s stronger than its predecessor but nothing out of this world. Note that if someone dies don’t sweat it; it will make a later fight quicker.

Go upstairs and walk to the left on the upper switch to deploy a bridge. Once on the other side, open the doors to press a switch and then go downstairs. Take the cure and go downstairs, and then go downstairs some more. For the first fight escape to shorten your sufferings, and wait for the wizard to pummel you to end the second fight (note that if Nina and Sr-1 are already dead, it saves time).

Once you control Ryu again exit Winlan and talk to the soldier in red. From Karma’s roof simply go downstairs until you go into the Wizard’s Lair. Circle the room to the far left to get a rang (after triggering a sproing), which attacks all enemies on the screen. Go back in the middle to save Nina

Boss fight: Wizard

Pray that he only uses his lighting, his weakest spell. Otherwise, use the E key since your attack power is still too low (and he evades easily). Make sure you have at least 11 hp before starting a round to avoid dying. Once you gain control again, exit the castle downstairs (right of the water-pouring statues), moving straight down and turning to the right in a narrow corridor. Talk to the soldiers and walk to the right until you are outside, on the other side of the bridge.

3.                      Saving Romero

Just follow the dust path south, and once you go down a small cliff walk right to enter Tantar. Walk to the left and down and enter the chief’s hut (across a little bridge) to get W Ptn (for wisdom). Then walk down and enter the house with the smoking chimney to have the blacksmith make a saw with the iron ore. Exit Tantar and go back to the path, walking straight into the forest. You saw will wear out but will clear a path so you can save Bo.

Dungeon: Forest of Despair/Dark Dragon Base

From the start, follow the right-hand wall and you will eventually get to a life and a tear drop (cures zombie status). From there still follow the right-hand wall to eventually get a wrist. From there, follow the upper line of trees and you will enter the Dark Dragon base.

Boss fight: Bowman and Lancer

Right when you enter you will have to face these two. With your boomerang in hand (and a help from Nina’s attack up) they will be out in two rounds at most.

After the fight walk straight to fall into a hole. You will have four chests containing life *2, long sword (attacks better than the boomerang but single target) and tear drop. Take the stairs back up and follow the upper wall to another small boss fight.

Boss fight: Bowman and Lancer

After you dispose of them go into the opening and down to 4 chests containing life 2, acorn, t drop and herbs. Take the stairs down and then more stairs down. There will be a wolf hat (gives you 50 damage from a trap), 2 herbs and t trop. Go back up and follow the lower wall all the way around the round (the opening is a hole) and go to your next boss fight.

Boss fight: Bowman and 2 Lancers

After the fight the “chief” will ask you a question. Should you answer yes at any point you will have to fight Pug, and very strong monster. So just keep saying no until you fight another boss fight.

Boss fight: General

He’s tougher than the soldiers you fought, but since Bo has fry he’s going to be a joke. After the fight go back outside and go to Tuntar, across from the dried river from Tantar. Go to the chief’s hut (across a small bridge in the eastern part of the village), talk to him and exit the village.

Go back to Winlan, but don’t enter the bridge. Instead walk north with Bo in the lead and you will be able to get through the forest and back to Romero in a jiffy. Enter the city at dusk (before that, talk to the people in the cemetery and the one right above the city walls, who talks about the water jar) and talk to Granny and her zombie husband. Go in the hole, take the water jar and herb and take the stairs back outside.

From Karma, go down and around the lake to the left and enter the cave you see. Follow the left-hand wall, take the nice hat in the road and keep following that wall until you see stairs. Ignore them at the moment and go south to get a fire stone. Get back to the stairs and go down. In that new room simply follow the left-hand wall up and around the room and take the stairs down. Go up and take stairs up to get a bronze hat and an apple. Go back down, and then down some more to go downstairs even more. In that room simply walk straight down to fill the water jar. You will be teleported back to Romero.

4.                      Stone Robot

Dungeon: Agua

Once you gain control take all the treasures, including the stone tablet. Get out of Romero and walk north to a floating island. Enter the castle and go up the stairs. Take the floatie and walk immediately left to get life 2, and slightly more to the left to get apple and acorn. From there walk up and take the stairs up. Take the floatie and take another one to your left to get a sun hat. Go back to the center platform, taking the lower-left device to take an iron shield. When you are back in the middle take the lower-right device. Take the thief clothes, take the platform and take the stairs up. Go down on a floatie, taking the lower-right one to get to a hairband. GO back in the middle and take the other floatie to get to a bracelet. Take the upper floatie and walk to the next floor. Walk right (hitting the wall) and you will get a steel bow hidden in a hidden alcove. Walk down and take a floatie. Search the pillar for your next fight.

Boss fight: Wisp

This boss has no second wind, but he’s tough nonetheless. Have Bo cast Fry, Ryu use the earth key and Nina heal as needed. After the fight search the pillar to get the King Key.

Go all the way back to Tuntar and walk north up a small hill. Follow the dirt path to the right, go up a small hill and follow the left-hand cliff until you enter the Stone Robot (through its right leg).

Dungeon: Stone Robot

Walk up straight upstairs, go to the right (taking the bronze hat and herbs) until you go up more stairs. Go down towards the “heart” for a fight

Boss fight: General and 2 Lancers

Hit them until they fall, it shouldn't’t take long. Walk straight and press A to reactivate the robot (there won’t be any monsters in that part).

Walk up to a luminous circle, walk up and take the second circle you see. Walk up straight to the second circle, and then to the first circle you see to get a life 2 and marble 1 (guaranteed critical). You will be teleported back to the heart, so make your way back and taking the second circle this time, walking straight until you hit the same structure where you found the earth key.

Once you gain control walk south to talk to Tantar’s Chief. Go downstairs to take herbs and the key. Exit and enter the cave where the robot landed you.

Dungeons: Ring Cave

There is no encounter in the first cave and it is completely straightforward. Just follow the path (taking a W Ptn on the way) towards the exit at the other end. Enter the next cave.

Walk straight, pressing A in front of the lock and go downstairs. Follow the straight-forward path upstairs, go down the water fall and walk straight down until you stairs taking you out of the water. You get a life in the first one and a life 2 in the one below a downwards staircase. Take it to a straightforward path going upstairs. Go up to get $2000 and go in the water. Follow the path until you see stairs on your right. Take them and take the path to your left to go back in the water. Go down another water fall and follow the rocky path until you take stairs out of the water to get a sky shield. GO back in the water and follow the path to the right. Get out of the water, taking the ring out of the blue chest, then use the luminous circle to go back to the entry gate.

Make your way back to Tantar and talk to the chief. If you arrive at night you will rest for free. Once you gain control exit down and go back inside the robot (which will have monsters this time). Make your way back up to the main control for the most difficult boss fight of the game.

Boss fight: Gremlin

It is difficult because on Gremlin’s second wind it only does a VERY strong attack-all spit so you will need to both use magic and acorns in order to stay healthy – you will find the use of savestates vital.

5.                      Light and Dark keys

After the fight cross the dried lava and enter a small temple surrounded by trees, making sure Ryu lead. Talk to the old man, heal as needed and take the melon in the chest for you first dragon challenge.

Boss fight: Talon

Unless you are super leveled up, you will probably end up using the earth key. Make sure you keep your health above 12-15 and heal as needed. After the fight you will acquire your first dragons: snow, flame and thunder (single attacks). Exit the temple, walk down straight and enter a small cave

Dungeon: Cave to Auria

Simply follow the right-hand wall and you will eventually exit in Auria. Note that if it were night when you entered the cave, it will be broad daylight once you exit. Walk south, around a small mountain and enter Auria.

Talk to your cell mate and he will open the jail gate. Note that if you get within 2 squares of the prison guard above the dragon shrine he will arrest you again. Anyway, walk to the left to the port, talk to the sailor and walk to the building with a fish head on it. Buy vitamin on the left, a pouch and go upstairs. Talk to the man alone at a table south of the stairs and he will give you $5000. Exit the building and enter the first mansion on your left. The dresser downstairs holds a S Ptn (for strength) and the chest further left holds a life. Go upstairs, where you can get a cure from the dresser and a W Ant from the chest on the left (hold on to it if you don’t hunt). Now go to the mansion of your right, where you can get V Ptn from the dresser and a life from the chest. Upstairs, you can get $2000 from the dresser and a marble 1 from the chest on the left. Exit and go in the mansion above you, where you can get a L Ptn (for luck) in the downstairs dresser. Upstairs, you can get $20,000 from a massage Nina gives and cure from the chest on the left. Exit and enter the next mansion to the left. You can get a smart ring in the dresser downstairs and a life from the one upstairs. Now enter the last mansion and walk straight to talk to a man pacing around. Say yes and go upstairs to get a cure and a golden tiara from the chests on the left. There is also $2000 in the dresser in the northeaster room.

With all the money you got you should be close to $65,000, enough to buy a gold bar. If not, sell your M drops and anything you don’t need (including cures if necessary) and you should be able to buy it (if not, wait until you get to Bleak). When you have it, exit the city and go in the cave east.

Dungeon: Cave to Bleak

Go downstairs after talking to one of the guys, follow the lower wall to the left and take the second opening you see on your left (after seeing a treasure locked behind a door) to get a shell hat and cure. Go back and keep following the wall to go upstairs. Follow the lower wall to the right and exit the cave. Note that it will always be night in the area, a good occasion to grind up your levels with the gold slimes. They are tough (and have fry) but are weak to fry.

Go around the lake by walking north, and then go south to enter Bleak. Enter the Inn and sleep for free… so you can get $5000. Enter the house behind the weapon store. Say yes twice, no twice and yes once to see an interesting cameo. Enter the very last house and talk to the old man, who will trade you his Icicle for a gold bar. Exit Bleak and go west to enter a cave

Dungeon: Cave to Desert

Yet another straight-forward dungeon. You literally can’t get lost by following the main path.

Once outside, walk to the desert and take 6-9 steps to the right. The walk south until you see a moving city; keep walking until you enter Arad. Go north and enter the red tent to talk to the chief (with the mustache). Say yes, exit the tent after resting and go to the right for a boss fight (look at the moving sand).

Boss fight: Sandworm

Now that you can transform into a dragon, boss fights will be a joke. Use the thunder for and just pummel it until it falls. Just make sure everyone’s HP stay above 20-25.

After the fight take the Fife northwest of the mayor and exit Arad. Go south towards crypt and move on the stone brick by walking under it – walk straight on it and the quicksand will keep you from using the fife. Press A and enter the Krypt

Dungeon: Krypt

(Note that all chests are trapped. Wait to get Karn to open them) Circle the room to take the giant stairs. Get down the platform, move straight right after getting off the stairs, hug the empty platform and go straight down of the right-had side of the stairs to go up another platform to go downstairs. The chest on the right will kill you but you should have enough Life to resurrect. It contains a head gear. Move up for your next boss fight.

Boss fight: Eyespy

This fight will be tougher. Once it loses its eyes Eyespy attacks with T Bolt (25 damage to everyone).

Go downstairs and open all the chest (the blue one is the trigger). Go downstairs and talk to Karn so he can join you. Put him in front and he will open every locked door you encounter. Go to the right, open two locked doors and follow a curvy path. Once you see another locked door go to the left to get a Life and Herbs. Open the locked door and go downstairs. Follow the path to go upstairs, and in that room go down to get hunting clothes. Go back up and take the large staircase down. Once downstairs you will have to circle the room to look at every tombstones. Once it’s done exit Krypt and warp back to Bleak (Nina acquires the spell at level 13). Grin Karn’s level if needed and enter the tower west of Bleak (by circling the lake to the north).

Dungeon: Dark Key Tower

Walk up straight, unlock the door and get $2000 from the chest. Go upstairs, go down-right and talk to the old man. Go upstairs, take the left staircase up to get a bolt stone and a life. Go back down to take the right-hand staircase, immediately take the other staircase up and go straight up. You will get a life 2, and you will get herbs, cure and horn hat by taking the downwards staircase to the left. Go back up, down and take the stairs going up NE. Walk around the candle and go down to take more stairs going up. You will eventually get a turban and $2000. Go back down 2x and go to the left to go upstairs. Circle around the candles to go right and upstairs, and examine the pillar to enter your next boss fight.

Boss fight: Cloud

It’s much stronger than Wisp (but fortunately has no second wind); it can do 40 damage with its magic.

After the fight examine the pillar to get the dark key (it can turn day into night. Now the Bleak area will experience normal day cycles). Go downstairs to the old man to get a mirror. Exit the tower and enter the cave to Auria.

Walk up straight north and open the locked door to get a gold bar. Go back outside and warp back to Auria. Go back to Ross’ mansion and go downstairs in the SW most room. Unlock the doors and talk to the woman. Go back upstairs to talk to Ross (walk straight right to a huge table) and then go back downstairs to talk to the daughter (answer yes). Take the chests, go upstairs, follow the path (the chest contains a fire stone) and examine the pillar to get the light key (turns nights into days. Auria will now get normal day cycles). Exit the mansion and go to the port (talking to the sailor on the way) to your next boss fight.

Boss fight: Archer and Knight

An easy fight, but watch out for Knight who can do 25 damage.

After the fight, talk to the fish and say yes.

6.                      Dark Dragon Base

Exit Auria and warp to Winlan (you can get the downstairs chests with Karn in front). Now warp to Romero to get the chests from Agua. Go upstairs, open the locked door and go upstairs some more. Go to the left upstairs (opening the locked door), right and upstairs (another locked door), left, take a floatie and eventually acquire a flame shield. Go back down and warp back to Auria. From there go back to the Cave to Auria. Simply follow the left-hand wall, examine the rocks blocking your way and exit on the other side.

Dungeon: Dark Dragon Base

Walk west around the trees and follow the path for a fight

Boss fight: Spearman *2

They are so easy that you don’t need to transform into a dragon. After the fight keep walking west, enter the boat and get into a fight

Boss fight: Archer

Too easy. Go downstairs for yet another fight

Boss fight: Archer and Spearman

Just make sure your health is adequate. Walk to the right to go upstairs and run into a more serious fight.

Boss fight: Squid

This is the first fight where elements matter. Since Squid is water-based all bolt-base spells (and dragon attacks) will do 50 percent more damage. It is fierce; its attack-all attack can do up to 40 damage, sometimes more (it’s the only attack on its second wind).

Take the V Ptn from the dresser and go all the way back to Auria (you can’t warp). Go to the port and talk to the captain. After a scene you will get into more fights, and without interruption.

Boss fights: Spearman and Archer*2; Archer*3; Archer *2 and Octo

That latter boss is stronger than Squid but still water-based. Its regular attack can do around 40 damage, while its charging attack can do over 50 damage. Once you gain control, answer yes twice and move Gobi into the sea.

7.                      Saving Ox and his friends

Go straight left, moving around the rocks, and enter Prima. Walk north and enter the building with a fish head on it. Talk to the blue fish, exit Prima and walk straight south and slightly to the right to go back to the surface. Walk south and left and follow the left-hand mountain range until you reach Gant.

Enter the house on the far left to get an hour glass (switches night and day) from the dresser. Get up one level and enter the house on your right to get L Ptn. Go back outside and enter the house at the “summit.” Talk to the bearded person (saying yes) and take the goods from the chest. Now walk all the way back to Prima.

Go back to the guild to talk to the blue fish. Exit the building and talk to Ox. Say yes and go back to where you left the party (the dresser contains a tide hat) – that’s east of Prima. Talk to Ryu and walk back to Prima. I find Gobi pretty useless so put him in the reserve row (right-hand side of the screen in the menu). Enter the inn, second floor, and enter a fight by talking to the ghost.

Boss fight: Morteo

Undead are weak to fire (and Zom spells). Morteo is very strong, causing over 70 damage so watch out.

After the battle Ox will join you. Exit Prima and warp back to Gant. Go back to the elder’s house and move the dresser to enter a secret passage. Use Ox to break the stones and put Karn in front. He will receive his first transformation spell (Shin), which merges his with Gobi and Bo. On the map they can shoot arrows further away. Exit Gant and warp to Auria to enter Krypt once more. Go back to the room where you fought Eyespy and use Ox to get a new boomerang from the rocks. Finally warp back to Agua to break walls (on the 2nd floor, on the right side of the floatie. After that go back to Prima and go left and slightly up to exit. Go south, navigating around the dead trees to enter a fortress.

Dungeon: Gant people prison

Go downstairs, have Ox break the rocks and the wall to get giant hammer and echo hat. Go upstairs, walk up straight to break 2 walls and break the one slightly to your left to get a life. Go back and break the wall to your right, walking right and up to break another wall. Follow the upper wall, breaking another wall and going downstairs to face a boss

Boss fight: Toad

It’s like Frog, but on steroids. It can cause over 80 damage (more during the second wind) to Ox so watch out.

After the fight go to the right to break a wall and exit the prison by the back door. Warp to Gant and visit the chief’s hut. He will repair the boomerang and let you rest for free. Exit the city and walk past the beach leading to Prima. Enter the hut surrounded by palm trees and talk to the old man. Exit the area and make your way back to the prison (it still has monsters, so watch out). However there are no soldiers so you can get the metal shield by going down-right after the second broken wall on the 2nd floor. From there just walk up and follow the path to the back-door exit.

Dungeon: Grimfowl Forest

Just walk towards the next, examining the egg to get into a fight.

Boss fight: Grimfowl

It’s weak towards cold. Just make sure to keep everyone’s hit point over 40, and watch out for its burn out (75 damage) during its second wind.

After the fight, take the egg and SLOWLY walk up, making sure a grimfowl follows you. If you exit and don’t see one, go back. Once you have one following you, SLOWLY make your way towards Nabal. You can’t enter the fortress without grimfowls wreaking havoc.

Dungeon: Nabal

Despite the grimfowls running wild, you will still have random encounters. Anyway, follow the path and go past the stairs, pushing the left-hand vase and examining it to get a life 2. Push the other one to get a skull ring. Go downstairs, go down, follow the path and break a wall to get into your next fight

Boss fight: SlimeX *3

The boomerang will come in handy in this fight. They are very strong, causing 50+ damage. Once you defeat them all they merge together to form a super SlimeX, whose attack is about the same.

8.                      Saving Prima

When you gain control walk upstairs, talk to the man in the bed, talk to him going through the bed and look down to get a statue. Exit Prima, go to the surface and warp to Arad. Then walk north and enter Wisdon.

Dungeon: Wisdon

I classified it as a dungeon because there are fight under the city. Anyway walk straight up and take the stairs down. Walk up, go right and break walls to get life 2 and life. Go back to where you were and walk left to break more walls to get herbs and pro shield. Go back to the middle, walk straight up and go downstairs. Walk straight up, go around the stairs breaking the rocks and get the old spear. Go upstairs, down-left to get a silver brooch and herbs, up-right to get herbs and rage hammer, down-right to get 2 herbs, pro shield and chain mail, and then up the large stairs. Enter the temple, drinking from the fountain is needed and go upstairs. Go to where the ghosts are and enter your next fight.

Boss fight: Wisp, Cloud and Myst

You will fight the ghosts one after the other without pause. The first 2 are now fairly easy, but Myst has an attack-all spell that causes 40 damage and it can heal once its health bar becomes crimson.

After the fight, go talk to the ghosts, and then go back to Prima. From there, walk straight up to enter the sea volcano

Dungeon: Sea Volcano

Walk up and turn right, going towards the end to get a sharp bow. Walk back and take the upper path, following it until algae are in your way. Go around them and take $3000 in a chest to the left. Go back, walk down and take the stairs up. Take the stairs to the right to get an M drop. Go back down, taking the path down and right to get $2000. From there walk left, go down a narrow corridor and following the path to get a power dagger. Go back, walk left and follow the path to go upstairs. Follow the path and go down a ledge where you will drop the old egg by pressing A.

Once you gain control walk up and towards the general for you next fight.

Boss fight: Pincher

Another water-based enemy. He is fairly easy; you shouldn't’t need to heal (but note that Bleu has very low defense so watch out).

9.                      Cort

Once you gain control enter Prima and go to the guild to get the Sphere. If you are VERY patient (and lucky), you can go to the flea market (below the café) and take a stall with Gobi in front. You might get the dark dagger, Karn’s best weapon. I got it during my speedrun, but during normal gaming it IS hard to get.

Anyway exit Prima with Gobi in front. Press A and he will turn in the Big Fish, which will travel fast under water and without random encounters. Go north, left when you see a chasm and keep going straight. Should you hit the sea wall on the right, go down and then right to go back to the surface. Punch a palm tree around Tunlan with Ox to get (eventually) a coconut. Enter Tunlan and walk straight up to the castle. Go to the right where people are gathered around the stairs and follow the path to go upstairs. Go immediately downstairs and go towards the chest on the far left of the room. Push the box furthest to the right and look under it to get a rod 5. Push the one opposite to it and follow the path to exit Tunlan.

Warp to Romero and exit to the left. Walk up and go to the left around Agua, following the coast line and going left of a mountain range. Keep following the coast until you see a well. Put Ryu in front, have him equip rod 5 and some bait to fish. If you have one free spot in your inventory you will get the dragon sword (strong but very heavy).  Make your way back to the prison, walking left once you take the back exit. Just follow the lower mountain range and you will get to a new dragon temple. Heal if necessary, take the marble 2 and go talk to the dragon spirit.

Boss fight: Bain

Although you are stronger than against Talon, you are still alone. And unless you overleveled (attacking at 130 damage) you will need your thunder dragon. Just attack Bain until you take it down, making sure your HP stay above 40. You will obtain your second set of dragon powers, which include attack-all elemental dragons and one that attacks undead.

Warp back to Tunlan and go underwater. Transform into the Big Fish and swim straight north of the island. You will see sea, er, vegetation; slightly go left and get back outside. Walk right, cross a bridge that’s above an orchard and walk up some more to enter Gust.

Enter the second house to your left (above the one with a windmill) and move the box.  You will see pots arrange like this

123

4  5

   6

Move 6 to the left, 4 to the left, 1 up, 5 to the right, 3 up and 2 to the left. Have Karn talk to the man to obtain Debo (can only be used under water; I never actually used it). Walk down to exit Gust; come right back in. Walk straight and exit the village through the back. Walk straight and enter the cave, avoiding the flower.

Dungeon: Rogue Dungeon

Go to the right to get a cure 2 (heals about 150 hp to everyone), but you will have to fight a Rogue, an easier version of Gremlin – Nina can do over 100 damage. Go up between the columns and take the second opening from the right to fight a Rogue to get a L Ptn. Walk all the way to the right and follow the path to go upstairs. After your transformation, walk beyond the stairs and go into the opening in the wall. Just follow the path and talk to the mouse between stalactites (the one below it will let you rest for free). Return to the mouse that just moved, follow the path and go right to your next fight.

Boss fight: K Roach

If you have the boomerang this fight is a joke. Plus the roaches are very weak – however their attack is strong so protect your magicians.

After the fight go back to the mice and talk to the one between stalactites. Open the chest on the left, and you will finally be able to continue your quest. In the next room you will have to take a series of floaties. Once on the left wall, walk down, and once on the central platform take the floatie up for a fight.

Boss fight: RugaX

It’s a red Gremlin. With your new bolt dragon you will take it down in no time. Just watch out of its attack-all stance as it can almost kill your magic users.

Once you gain control walk back into Gust. Walk left and enter the small cave. Follow the path for another fight.

Boss fight: Gold Fly

It’s pretty strong, attacking at 70+ damage. You shouldn't need to transform into a dragon, but do it if you feel you are too weak.

After the fight pick the fly and exit Gust. Go back into the sea and swim south, going right of Tunlan’s island. Swim until you see rocks, in which case you should swim over them (with the Big Fish). Get back out of the water in that sector and walk straight south into a small cavern. Talk to the frog between the stalactites at the end of the cave to get the oil and warp back to Gust. Enter Nicholie’s house (the first one on the right when you enter). Talk to Bleu and exit the village from the back. Get back to that flower to fight it.

Boss fight: FlowerX

Although it poisons a lot, let your team mates be poisoned in order not to waste attacks (besides you only lose a few HP). Its regular attack can do 80+ damage (more when the health bar becomes crimson) so be careful.

After the fight go back to Nicholie’s house to fight him again

Boss fight: RugaX

Just stay healthy and you will take him down in no time.

After resting exit the village again and walk towards the bridge. Cort will finally face you.

Boss fight: Horntoad

He is challenging. His jumping attack causes 60+ damage, and his attack-all earthquake can cause that much damage to everyone. And it’s quick.

10.    Saving Mogu

Before crossing the bridge, don’t forget the Maestro under the bed (in the 2nd house on the left, above the one with a windmill). Now cross the bridge, walk down-left, following the cliff, go between two mountain ranges and cross a bridge. Walk left until you see someone in a hole; go into that hole. Follow that person again, talk to her and talk to the person next to the bed (say yes). Exit Moleville and warp to Tunlan.

Walk straight up to get in the castle (it has a lyre above the door), talk to the woman in green (saying yes) and go upstairs to talk to the Princess (with turquoise hair). Go back down to talk to Granny and exit the castle to turn day into night. Go back inside the castle and take the same way you took to get rod 5. Except this time don’t go down the second set of stairs; keep going and go through a crack in the wall and walk to the farthest palm tree, examining it. Take the second staircase down and talk to Granny. Examine the left, and then the right door and watch a scene. Go back to the treasure room and take all of them, including the Bolster (don’t forget about the holes). Exit the castle and warp back to Gramor. Talk to the person next to Mogu and say yes.

10.1         Mogu’s dream

Exit the house and walk straight up to go outside. Just follow the upper part of the road and you will get inside the tower.

Dungeon: Mote’s Tower

Walk straight up and then to the right, following the path. Once the walls disappear, walk 13 steps up, 4 left, 5 up and then walk left to the red button. Walk down at the next intersection, right, down and follow the lower wall to the left, going right at the first intersection and follow the path to the staircase. Talk to the boy and say no. Warp outside and go back to the city.

Talk to Anne and go back to the house where you first came. Talk to both person and exit the city, going right-down across a rope bridge. Then walk to the right and go towards the cave entrance.

Dungeon: Geyser field

Follow the path, avoiding the bones (if you walk on them the leader loses 1 HP). The only bones you can walk one have a pattern like this

Take the first one you see, walk to the right and walk on the same formation when you see a chest to get light shield. Walk up following the bone path, go up when you see the appropriate bone formation, follow the path (walking between stalactites) and get a head gear. Follow the path up to get a life, and follow the path some more. Once you get there:

avoid the circled part and walk right to of the bones you see between 2 geysers. Go around it, walk left, go 2 steps above a small pile of bones, walk left until you come here

Walk one step left of the bones, up until another pile of bones, right of it and up to one step below a stalactite, 2 steps right, 2 steps up, 1 right, 3 up, 2 left and up to the exit. Enter the cave, talk with Courage and Mogu will join you. I find him useless and keep him at the back.

To get through the geyser field again, to the opposite of the direction below the previous image. From there, walk right until you see a lone pile of bones. Walk down, left just above the upper-most stalactite, down 1 step when you see a pile of bones, left down the path, down on the secret bone formation, down-left, down a two-step wide hole (on the right side), right-down (the secret bone formation), left and down the path to the exit.

Make your way back to Mote’s Tower and reach the stair case. Talk to him and go up. Follow the path down. Once the walls disappear: 9 up, 16 left, 5 down, 3 left and down to the red button. Walk right at the first intersection and follow the path, turning left when you can to go upstairs. Follow the path, and when the walls disappear: 2 right, 5 down, 3 right, 5 down, 13 right, 4 up, 6 left, 5 up, 5 right and up to the red button. Go upstairs. The next path is very sinewy but straight forward. Just follow it (walking towards the red buttons) to your next fight.

Boss fight: Mothro

He has a very high evasion rate, even for magical attacks. And he can instantly kill (and paralyze, poison but don’t mind it). Exit Gramor.

Once out go towards the “plant” SW of Gramor and have Mogu dig (press A when he leads) to get Root. Warp to Camlon and enter the large house above the inn to get a W Ptn in the dresser. Exit Camlon and walk north towards where Nanai stood. But instead of going down the cliff (after the second bridge) go up to dig a head in the sand. Walk left and Karn will obtain his next transformation spell, Doof (merge with Bo and Ox, can push larger crates). Warp to Bleak and enter the house above the dragon shrine. As Doof, push the stack of boxes in the upper part of the house. Transform back to normal and talk to the man who will give the last transformation spell, (Puka, merger with Gobi, Bo and Ox). Warp to Auria and have Puka open the door by pressing A to get a dark brooch.

11.    Sky key

Warp back to Gramor and go south to the cave.

Dungeon: Cave to Spring

Yet another cave where you can’t possibly get lost.

Once outside walk left to enter Spring (Winter?) Talk to the man in front of the house below the inn and get back outside. Note that you can exit town by walking on the ice (you can go there near where you talked to the man). Once out, just walk south to the tower, having Mogu dig your way in.

Dungeon: Spyre

Walk up straight to go downstairs. Walk down and left-up to get a cure 2. Go back, staying on the same level, and go up the second set of stairs you see. Follow the path to the right and going all the way down to get a shell and A Ptn (agility). Go back up and walk left to a forest of columns; walk all the way to the left to get flame and world armors. Get back to the right and go upstairs.

In this large room, go (more or less) NE to get upstairs (note that the platforms with the stairs are always near a wall). In the next ones (until you reach the stars): SW, SE, N, SW and NE to a pillar. Examine it.

11.1         Mote’s Dream

Get outside of town, where there are no random fights until you reach the tower. Walk down-left to get on a platform. Follow its path until you enter a cave.

Dungeon: Mote’s Cave and Tower

Walk straight downstairs, walk up to go downstairs some more and follow the path, going down to a room full of treasures. Go down the hole, upstairs and follow the path to go upstairs some more. Walk left, up at the intersection, go downstairs and follow the lower wall to get upstairs. Take the treasures to your right, walk up, left, up and go upstairs. Heal and save (by talking to the vase) if you need and enter the tower proper.

In this maze (the directions refer to where you walk after the spinning), walk up, left, down, up, right, up, down, down at the intersection, right and out to another part of the dungeon.

Walk towards the glowing purple tile (-1 HP when touching it) and go downstairs. Hug the wall on the right, walking on 2 yellow tiles, walk 3 steps to the right and one step down a hole. Go upstairs and walk SW to go upstairs (make sure Karn is in front so he can detect traps). Take the SE most stairs to fight Mote

Boss fight: Mote

A tricky fight. He starts with relatively weak physical defense. But once his image is completely visible (about 15 physical hits) it shoots up. His image blurs back whenever you hit him with magic. After his health bar starts decreasing the fight will stop. When it starts again find the right balance to defeat him. Watch for his physical attack that can cause 80+ damage. He also casts inferno (90 damage) during his 2nd wind. After the fight examine the pillar to get the sky key, activate the device to the left and make you way back to Spring.

12.    Time key

Enter the water next to the item shop. Walk north to exit it and go on the pier to fish a dragon armor. Go back into the water and walk up to get in the cave behind the waterfall.

Dungeon: Cave to Carmen

Yet another straightforward cave you can’t possibly get lost into.

Once outside follow the right-hand mountain range, walking straight south when it starts moving to the right. Carmen is surrounded by trees. Talk to the only man moving in town (and take the ruby brooch from the dresser in the inn) and get back outside.

Walk south, hugging the cliff, making sure you have Bo/Shin leading the way. You will eventually go up; walk left and then down when you see a cliff. Walk around it, go up and enter the dungeon.

Dungeon: Tock

Walk straight up, go left and go on the left-pointing arrow. Go up to take a life, up-right to take an evil cane and back down on the left arrow. Go up to pass between columns and get the icy armor. Take the right arrow and follow the path to take 2 left arrows to go upstairs. Walk left to get a cure and back right on an arrow. Walk down on the right arrow, right to another arrow and up. Now walk left, hugging the upper wall, and circle the room (nearly 360 degrees) to a left arrow and go upstairs. Take the golden tiara, then go down on the arrow, to the left to get life 2 and guard shield and then upstairs.

In this maze, make your way up without touching the arrows. Once you get up here

take the lower left arrow. Then (brackets mean where you take your arrow from where you’re standing): left (down), left (down), left (down-left), down (down-left), take the agile hat, up to get back outside the arrow realm. Once back at the image above: left (down), left (down-left), left (down), right (down), right (down), down (right), right (right), left (up) and take the wolf skin. From the front of the chest: down (up-right), down (right), up (down-right), up (up), right (up) and upstairs. Walk up the middle path for a scene.

Once you gain control walk right (south of the tree), up the cliff and to the left back to Carmen (you will need to walk around the trees). Once back outside make your way back to the summit of Tock where you will fight

Boss fight: Cerl

You won’t finish this fight. So make sure you stay healthy; her individual attack can do 50+, and her attack-all does that to everyone.

Once you gain control warp back to Carmen. Enter the house with the chimney and talk to Bleu. Once outside make your way to where you first landed after time distorted. Have Ox punch the tree to get the Fruit and follow the dirt path to the right to get back to Cerl’s castle. Go upstairs and take the time key when you have a chance. Once you gain control walk upstairs.

13.    Saving Nina

Enter Tunlan and talk to the cloaked figure next to the dragon shrine. Walk upstairs and enter the room straight up from the second staircase you take. Talk to everyone, exit the city and warp back to Carmen. Enter the house above the weapon store and talk to the old man. If you couldn't’t get W Ant by hunting, go upstairs and push the barrel to get some. Walk to the animal fountain, talk to the cloaked figure and examine where it was to get a pass.

Exit Carmen and make you way back to Cerl’s castle. Once out at the back, follow the path and then walk on the dirt path to the broken bridge. Have Ryu fish a poisonous fish and warp back to Carmen to have the Tonic ready (you will sleep for free). Warp to Tunlan, give Nina the Tonic and she will join back.

14.    The ultimate dragon power

Once outside, Nina can fly when she leads by pressing A. Warp to Carmen and fly NE of Tock to dig a bull’s head. There is a hero bow (trapped). From there fly south to open a grotto with Puka to get a wind brooch. Warp to Arad and fly SW to a well where you can fish out a dragon hat. Now fly north of Tuntar and west of where the robot was. You will encounter another dirt hole for Mogu. There are a V Ptn, S Ptn and Sash (all trapped). From the dirt hole, fly slightly west to an island with 2 unequal towers. Search the tallest one to get a tri-rang. Warp to Gramor and fly north, following the mountain range and west when it starts going down to the next dragon temple (before entering it, fly SW to fish out a dragon shield).

Boss fight: Avian

It will prove to be tough again since you are alone. Make sure your HP stay over 40 and you should be good.

Now make your way to where you got the water to cleanse Romero. Keep walking and you will find an underwater cave. Make your way down, enter the room and have Ryu talk to the dragon spirit. You’ve obtained Agni, the strongest dragon spell!

15.    Zog

You will now fly to Scande, the Imperial Capital – it’s south of where you fished the poisonous fish. Talk to the central guard and examine the “thing” next to the elevator. Talk to the man right of the elevator and warp to Spring. Enter the house below the inn and talk to the man in the bed. Exit the city and warp to Gant to have the parts repaired. Walk upstairs in the chief’s house, take the A Ptn from the dresser and talk to the granny. Talk to the chief and fly back to Scande. Put the parts where they belong and take two very tall elevators. Talk to the cloaked figure and exit Scande.

Warp to Tunlan And enter the room straight up from the first set of stairs. Note that Dragon Heart reduces White Dragon (i.e. Ryu) HP to 1. Now exit and make your way back to Scande Castle.

Dungeon: Scande

There won’t be random fights in the first room. From the entrance, follow the path, turn left, go around the platform and go upstairs. Walk straight down, go around a table and down some more to go upstairs. From there you will have a long but straightforward path where you can’t get lost. Drink in the fountain if you need and walk straight up to confront Zog.

Boss fight: Zog

Change to Agni (Karn can’t be merged), put it on auto-fight and watch. IF your HP get too low, just use a cure.

When you gain control walk south, and then up in the hole. Walk north and talk to the mole, and then go down the hole. Exit the room, walk left and go up the stairs to exit Scande.

16.    The end of Tyr

Make your way to the very summit of Agua (a staircase left of where you got the fire shield). Walk straight up into the temple, follow Sara upstairs and follow the path for a scene. Follow Jade.

Dungeon: the Two Towers

Before doing the dungeon, you can exit by walking straight down. If you’re lucky you will get the most lucrative monster (a golden floating slime) that gives 9999 exp and gold.

Take the stairs up and go around the hole to get a domino. Go back down, walk up and press on the switch; there is a power armor upstairs. Walk on the switch, go downstairs and walk up-right to press on a switch and go upstairs. Follow the path on the right, going up at an intersection to get an agile armor. Go back to the intersection, walking down and following the path to go downstairs. Press the switch and walk right, press the switch, walk up to get trap grid. Hug the upper wall to the right, walk on the switch and keep hugging the right-hand wall. Walk up first chance you get, follow the path to switches and follow the path upstairs. Follow this path upstairs some more and walk towards the stairs. You will hit a magic wall and your HP will be reduced to 1. However no need to heal if you levels are above 25-30. Try going downstairs, talk to Sara and start a fight.

Boss: Sara

Remember when I said Dragon Heart reduces White Dragon HP to 1? It also includes Sara. Get your fastest character to use D Hrt and the second fastest to attack her.

Take the stairs down and follow the path to go downstairs, and then right up. Follow (and hug) the right side of the hole to go upstairs. Walk left, up (as far as you can), right (asayc), down (asayc), left (asayc), up (asayc), left (asayc), down (asayc), right, up (asayc), left (asayc), down (asayc), left (asayc), up (asayc), right (follow the path), down (asayc), right (asayc), down (asayc), left (asayc), up and upstairs. Walk up on the floatie and up some more for a scene.

16.1         Iron Claw

Fly to Camlon and then straight east until you see an isolated house on an island. Talk to the old woman, go back out and fly due south of Drogen until you hit the Gant coast; then fly east to talk to the man who helped you getting into Nabal. Talk to him, enter his tent, move the vase left of his bed up and the next one left to get his list. Go back to the woman, enter her house and go through her bed to push the right-most urn up and the other one left to get an item. Fly back to the old man, talk to him and fly back to the old woman. Talk to her, fly back to the old man and obtain the iron claw.

Warp to Gramor, walk right-up and have Mogu talk to the Master Digger. Exit Gramor and make your way to the Obelisk, which floats above the poisonous marshes close to the broken bridge.

Final dungeon

Have Mogu leading, walk straight up and press A on a fuzzy tile. Follow the lower-hand wall to the right, take the floatie, follow the path to another floatie and go downstairs. Go up to a floatie, make your way to the right to take the SE floatie, follow the path to another floatie*2 (follow Goda) and go downstairs. Take the floatie up, walk some more and get ready to fight.

Boss fight: Goda

It’s way easier than Zog since he only uses physical attacks. Transform into Agni, set of auto-battle and watch.

Walk through the hole left by Goda, go downstairs and take the upper floatie. Take the stairs, take the floatie, go down, take the stairs up to your right and walk to a floatie. Follow the path, go downstairs and immediately up on your right, take the floatie, go down, then up (to the left), follow the path to a floatie and follow the path to go downstairs. Take the floatie, go downstairs and walk straight up. Say no and get ready to fight.

Boss fight: Jade

Much like the other fights, you just need to transform to Agni and watch it go. Make sure your HP stay above 100.

After the fight walk on the “circle” on the left. Take the floatie and walk up to Tyr. Say yes and get healed. Say no to start the fight.

Boss fight: Tyr

To trigger the good ending, you simply need to use Agni once. Of course, you should keep it in order to make your life easier. For the bad ending, you just cannot use Agni at any point (it’s much harder that way). As with Jade, make sure your HP stay over 100. When the second part of the fight starts, use the water jar (yes you still have it) to restore everyone’s HP and AP.

Enjoy the ending.

Very fantastic... I love the breath of fire series.

Even though 2 and 3 are generally my favorites (both those games might make my top 15 rpgs or so...), 1 is probably the best to just "pick up and play through" at this point for me.

Only 2 quick little notes, comments,.. Or whatever..

1. It's a lot to reread but a few things to straighten out like.. "so you don't have around endlessly"

2. Also I've played though this game a few times now and don't know about the avoid fights thing... think you can explain that a little more? You say you can skip fights if you just wait a few seconds before getting in a fight... without knowing truly what to do that sounds a little weird.

Anyways excellent job as usual. Don't mind my little nit-picks. You definitely are one of my favorites to read here...

tRIUNE : I don't know either. I hadn't highlighted it on the Word document.

Dragoon26 : I also prefer 2 (I actually played it first). As for the avoidance of fighting: it's possible to avoid fights altogether except in Mogu's dream. You need to abuse the savestates; save often and whenever you go into a random fight load and walk back a little slower. Chances are you won't get into a fight at the exact same spot

You made a pretty good guide here, but I'll give you a few tips:
1. Never use microsoft word for a long document you'll post on vizzed. Use something such as Notepad, as Vizzed can read the code easier.
2. Don't use purple, ever. Purple blends in with the background of Vizzed, and if someone is reading it, they can skip over the purple cause they can't see it.
3. Cut out unnecessary words. You sometimes put things like "its pretty straight forward", and that doesn't contribute any to the thread, and makes it a longer read, and sometimes annoying.

Other than that however, your guide was really great.
