In order:
#1. Super Mario 64
#2. Super Mario Bros. 2 U.S.
#3. Super Mario Bros. 3 ties with Super Mario World.

SM64 was --in my opinion-- one of the best platformers ever made, and only found competition in Banjo-Kazooie.

SMB2 was a huge shock and departure from what we expected, and really made the series far more intriguing to me.

SMB3 was HUGE compared to the first one, and had so much to do that it's still a ton of fun to this very day. While SMW is a new take on a classic Mario setup, and brought new innovations that new Mario games would do well to learn from.

Also bear in mind that I haven't played any Super Mario platformers since SM64, so this list may change after I do.

I've just about played every Mario platforming game in existence. Out of all the amazing games in that series, here are my top 3 favorites:

1. Super Mario 64: This game is not only my favorite Mario game ever, but it's also in my opinion the greatest platforming game in video gaming history. The first time I played that masterpiece, I was in awe of just how amazing and massive the overworld looked and how precise the controls were. They are still to this day the best controls I've seen in a platformer. There's so much incredible music such as Koopa's Road and Dire, Dire Docks theme. I honestly feel like this game has the best level variety in the series as well. The last reason I feel like Super Mario 64 is the best in the series is because of the powerups, which include Wing, Metal, and Vanish Mario. No other Mario game compares to the awesomeness of Super Mario 64. Not even the DS remake.

2. Super Mario World: Out of all the 2D Mario platformers, Super Mario World would have to be my favorite one because for one thing, that's the game that Yoshi made his first appearance in. Another reason I feel like this was Mario's best 2d platforming adventure is because the boss battles and music were in my opinion more memorable than the ones in the NES titles. Also there was a wider variety of different levels in Super Mario World than in NES Mario games. Along with that, the cape feather made it's debut, which gave Mario the ability to fly. Overall, Super Mario World is definitely better than my 3rd favorite Mario game, which also happens to be a 2d platformer.

3. Super Mario Bros 3: This NES classic is my 3rd favorite Mario Platformer because it's almost as good as Super Mario World in every way, except that Yoshi doesn't make an appearance. I really enjoyed using the Tanooki powerup, though the frog suit was absolutely horrendous. Other than the Frog Suit, I can't think of anything else wrong with this game. Super Mario Bros 3 deserves to be at number 3.

I'm gonna get a lot of hate for not including SM64 on here, but here's mine:

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

2. Super Mario 3D World (3DS)

3. Super Mario World (SNES)

Super Mario World is the game I have the fondest memories of. Playing with my family was always fun, and it was one of the few games my Grandmother played. Heck, it even introduced Yoshi, one of the best characters. The worlds were fun, the gameplay was smooth, and the whole thing was still challenging. Fun at any point in space and time.

Super Mario 3D World was REALLY great as well. Not only did it have fun levels, cool power-ups, AND paid attention to the competitive side of play, allowing you to see your rivals times for each stage. It also had a ton of replay value, with the star coins and what-not.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was the first game in which the series got its personality. Rhyme or reason? Screw that crap we have an Italian on drugs the make him bigger fighting turtle and other drugs. Each world was fun in its own rite, even the water world was a blast, something not many games can do.

The only reason I didn't put SM64 on here is because it's just too bland. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's a really fun game to play, but each world feels somehow... old. It's just doing the same thing again and again, almost like they had a world-checklist or something, and eventually the worlds feel a tad old. Not to mention this game has NOT aged well, and the DS remake didn't help at all. I would love to see this game get a true revamp, not a sequel.

My top 3 favorite Mario platformers are (in order):

1. Super Mario 64. That was an easy choice for me, and most people who know me on vizzed know that I'm pretty crazy about this game. I love the 3D gameplay, its unique graphics and textures, and the amazing amount of depth that the game has. 120 stars is a lot of stars to get!

2. Super Mario 3D World. It's really fun being able to play as 4 different characters (including Peach! ) and get all the green stars! It's also an excellent game for me to play with my friends, and all my friends that have played it with me love it like I do!

3. New Super Mario Bros. U. Just like Super Mario 3D World, it's an excellent game to play with my friends and all my friends who came over to my house and played it loved it like I did! Also, I like the addition of the Baby Yoshis, especially since you can float in the levels with them.
