Recently, a lot of major airplane crashes have been in the news, there even was one a few days ago.

In case you missed any of those things, here are some of examples including the one mentioned above:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_370
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia_Airlines_Flight_17
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanwings_Flight_9525
http://edition.cnn.com/2015/07/02/asia/indonesia-military-plane-crash/

Most often nobody of the passengers survive, and the main causes for these crashes turn out to be certain malfunctioning parts or pilots who turn out to be suicidal while nobody knew of this.

My question is, how comes that there have been so many lately? There have always been awful airplane crashes but they get more and more tragic and mysterious, with airplanes disappearing completely or no bodies to find they get really creepy.

What are your thoughts on this?

In most cases, finding the cause of a plain crash is hard to determine (especially if it's lost at sea) because the black box doesn't tell everything.

For lack of a better word, it's just "bad luck". Even though plane crashes have few (if any) survivors, it's still the safest mode of transportation.

As air travel becomes more and more frequent, the absolute number of plane crashes increases. The total number of casualties has been fluctuating, with 2014 being a rise attributable to the Malaysian Airlines incidents.

Why have so many major accidents been happening lately? Most likely just a coincidence, a period of crashes that happens every once in a while. For example, there were three major accidents in Japan in a month-long period in 1966, causing over 300 fatalities (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haneda_Airport#Incidents_and_accidents). Then the accidents seemed (are all still believed) to have no correlation.

Remember, you stand a higher chance of surviving a plane crash per flight than a car trip per ride, so this is likely nothing to worry about.

I don't know why these have come up, but the simple fact is, these things happen, and there really is no way to stop them from happening.

These all happened in the span of a year, and there were only 4 of them. The thing was, these were all pretty much small airlines that had this happen to them, and ones where security measures aren't always the strongest.

And honestly, you should worry about any of this, no one really should, as it is such a low chance that this kind of thing will happen, that it isn't expected.

And plus, training and back ground checks/ mental health checks have gone up since these incidents took place, especially the German one, and hopefully, this will be able to keep this number of these kinds of deaths as low as possible, and maybe even down to none.

janus : But aren't black boxes made to record everything and I though they are incredibly hard to destroy?
It is? That's the first time I hear that.

Boxia : Yeah, that sounds logical. It's mostly Asian airlines that had major crashes like you said with Malaysia Airlines.
It may be over very soon, but for some reason it has been more in the news than lately, so it might not be as worse as I thought.

Barathemos : The security measures are pretty strong most of the time, but there are some rules that cause problems like this to happen, like how co-pilots can shut off the door to the cabin for the main pilots.
That's a good point you mention there, especially since the suicidial pilots turned out to have a suspicious background when more investigation was done.

Yes, black boxes are hard to destroy, but as I said if it's lost at sea we're screwed. Plus, I wonder how much it actually records. Often times when we hear about black boxes in the media it's a record of the last few minutes in the flight deck. I don't believe it explicitly tells anything about engines

I think it's mainly just bad luck really, things like these can happen from time to time.

Of course as more use flying with an airplane as a method of travel that usually also increases the risk for them happening, even so an airplane crash happening is extremely rare much more rarer than a car crash.

I think if anything this should make it so extra security measures may be taken because they want to prevent it from happening and hurting the reputation of their company.

For people too afraid of airplanes, there is an app showing the probability of your particular flight crashing, which is usually 1 in a million

janus : Nah, but it's better than nothing. Too bad that some planes crash in the sea, maybe we will have a solution for that sometime as well.

Zlinqx : That's true, mostly because all weirdos can drive a car but a pilot requires a lot of training and you need to be physically and mentally stable. I hope they're improving security measures, as they're pretty good now but if improvements still can be made then that's very useful.

janus : There is an app like that? Tell us.

I've noticed this awful trend as well. I don't understand why this keeps happening. The people who hire those crazy pilots need to start doing a much better job of hiring qualified pilots. Also the people who build the planes need to make sure that the plane's safe enough to fly without something going wrong. All I know is that seeing all these crashes makes me kinda glad that I don't travel through the air.

Since so many of you inquired about the plane crashing app: http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/22/travel/flight-crash-app/ A little sadistic, but it is still safer than a car trip as Sheldon Cooper would show you.
