It's been a decade since Montreal had the Expos and the mayor of Montreal wants the city to get a new team to play there.

The goal is to get at least a few regular season games to be played in Montreal in 2016 and at some point in the future to either have a new expansion team or a relocated team to play there.

What are your thoughts?

Apparently an exhibition game there in April brought in nearly 100,000 fans, so it really looks like they have the market for it now, but they would need a better stadium, and if they get an expansion team, most likely a 2nd team would need to be added to even things out and the divisions would need to be changed.

Personally I feel the best option if this were to happen would be to relocate the Tampa Bay Rays there, they just don't have the Market.

It could potentially have the same impact that happened when the winnepeg jets got an nhl team again after 13 years when their previous team was moved to pheonix. Winnepeg is arguably the most lively and most exciting arena in the entire nhl now since the return of the jets. I think the same thing would occur if montreal got an mlb team to return.

I understand the tampa relocation argument, but I dont think montreal would be the first place to get an mlb franchise. Ive heard rumblings of a team based in carolina as a possible fit.

I dont think tampa will be relocated unless mlb exhausts all other options first, similar to how the nhl exhausted all other options before relocating the atlanta thrashers to winnepeg.

I think if they built a new stadium with a retractable roof, they would be a big draw for some of these teams who aren't performing as well financially. Especially any team that's looking for a new stadium.

Montreal has wanted a team since they got cheated out of their old team (for those not in the know, basically the current Marlins owner, Jeffery Loria, sold the team in a really elaborate set up, that basically f***ed the Expos.

Here's a reminder from Wikipedia.

"In 2002, as part of an orchestrated move with Bud Selig and then-Marlins owner John W. Henry, Loria sold the Expos to "Expos Baseball, LP," a partnership of the other 29 major league clubs, for $120 million. In effect, the Expos were sold to the commissioner's office. Henry then sold the Marlins to Loria for $158.5 million, including a $38.5 million no-interest loan from MLB. The deal was approved by the other owners before Loria and Henry even signed a contract, and paved the way for Henry to buy the Boston Red Sox.Loria moved the Expos' entire front office staff, on-field staff, office equipment and computer equipment to Florida. MLB's plans to contract the Expos and Minnesota Twins failed, though, as the Twins were compelled through legal action to fulfill the terms of their lease at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome."

In essence, then commissioner Selig allowed then Expos (now Marlins owner) Loria to move the team to Washington, before selling out the team, to get the money to acquire the Marlins, another place Loria, the worst owner in sports, has f***ed. And that's just the good ending. They both wanted to get rid of the Expos (and Twins) entirely, and make MLB a 29 team league again.

It's as much Selig's fault as Loria's, but now, Selig is gone.

What I'd love to see, is the Marlins being forced to move (instead of the Rays). I know they have a new stadium, but I hate the idea of the Red Sox having to spend literally half their divisional schedule in Canada. It's bad enough we have to go to Canada to play the Jays. Plus, it'd be dramatic irony of the highest caliber, to have Loria be f***ed by the same people he himself f***ed.

That would be worth all the money in the world.
