So...Anyone want to tell me what the F*** this thing is doing here?! How,just..How is Slowbro in the OU Tier? This makes no sense.Slowbro has not been a competitive choice since gen 1!

*Sigh* Well,i suppose i should try to figure out how this thing has suddenly bounced back from the grave. So,time to go through some mandatory history.Buckle up dearies, this could take a while.

Slowpoke,in gen 1,was a pretty lack luster water type.It learned moves at a snails pace, and was outclassed by bulbasaur, and even vaporeon. However, its evolution Slowbro was actually pretty good. This was due to an extremely powerful set that went a little something like this.

- Amnesia
- Surf
- Thunder Wave
- Rest

Couple this set of moves with Slowbros impressive health and defense, and you had yourself quite the defensive wall. This was at the time when Slowbro was pretty cool to use, although, very few people actually figured it out.
However, gen 2 is when it started to go all down hill for our little buddy. While it was still defensive, and arguably the best thunderwave user for the time,it started to get outclassed by other options, and as new pokemon are introduced, different variables and counters are created. And let me show you one Pokemon that reduced the chances of Slowbro getting played for a LONG time.

This guy. This guy right here screwed over Slowbro, hard. It countered Slowbro in almost every single way.Near perfectly.

Gen 3 is where Slowbro got even worse. It got dropped to Borderline levels of play.(A.K.A,it sits in a 50/50 level of play. Not to good to be played alot, not to bad to be completely dropped.) Sure,it had more sets to use,but they were all still lack luster. And Slowbro's spot as one of the best Thunderwave users in the game got taken away.

Gen 4 is when Slowbro started to show some sign of bouncing back,as it was now in the UU (Underused) tier of Pokemon. It rose above the rank of borderline, and was now..Well,good.Not very good, and not even close to great, but good.It had a very good Choice Specs set, that could compete against alot of competitive Pokemon at the time. This was a time when Slowbro was actually pretty decent.

Gen 5 got even better. Many players started to see progress in Slowbro,by using it in double battles.Being a very good support. And a not so bad choice in single battles.

And now here we are,gen 6.Slowbro has finally made its way back to the top tier of Pokemon. And with a mega evolution! So..Well,i'm out of stuff to say.

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to Pokemon Reviews, and this week: Slowbro.Let's get started.

Moveset & Leveling Experiences.
..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Eh..I think i'll just say it.Slowpoke is not that bad to level. In fact,i found this guy rather fun to level up.Ev trained,it was able to easily get me past alot of the gyms without a problem. And was excellent in the elite 4.
And the evolution does not take to long at all.At least not compared to the previous Pokemon i have recently reviewed.(Gyarados.Volcarona.)

When Slowpoke hatches,it should have these 3 moves.

Curse
Yawn
Tackle

Well,i think we already know what to do,spam tackle.Using yawn right now is pointless. As you will most likely be able to take on a variety of targets, without any need for a status condition to cripple them. And curse will not do much right now.

Level 5 gives you growl.I won't even explain what it does.Because using it is completely pointless. But you're forced to take it anyway. As i said before, you should be able to take on most targets without help.

At level 9 you can learn confusion.A decent special water type move, that deals 50 base damage, and has 100% accuracy.Take it.There is no reason for you not to.It's a STAB,and you're focused in special attack...Wait!

Attack: 65
Sp.Atk: 40

...Huh..Well,still better do to being a STAB.

Level 14 gives you the option to learn confusion.Basic special psychic type move.Deals 50 base damage, and has 100% accuracy.Along with a 10% chance to confuse the target. No reason for you to not take it.

Level 19 gives you disable.A..Well,pretty fun move. This move forces the target to not use the last attack it used, for 2-5 turns. This is so fun to use, when you can actually predict it.If you have some room to spare, take it.

At level 23 you can learn Headbutt. This is a normal physical move that deals 70 base damage, and has 100% accuracy.Along with a 30% chance for your opponent to flinch. This move works because mathmatically speaking,it's currently better than water gun and confusion, even with the STAB they both get. However, take into account that the 30% flinch won't do much, because you're most likely much slower than your opponents.I still recommend it.

Level 28 will let you learn water pulse.A special water type move that deals 60 base damage, and has 100% accuracy. However, this move has a 20% chance to confuse the opponent.Immediatly replace water gun with this.It is better in every single way.

Level 32 gives you..Well,arguably the best move you will learn as Slowpoke.Zen Headbutt. This baby deals a base damage of 80,and is a physical move. And has 90% accuracy. This move also has a 20% chance of making the target flinch. This move is better than confusion for a variety of reasons.

1.Slowpoke focuses on physical moves right now.
2.Zen Headbutt also counts as a STAB.Doing even more damage.

Once again,no reason not to take this move.

Level 36 lets you learn one of the best move this Pokemon will ever get.Slack Off.This move automatically restores half of your health. This move is so,so useful. Please find something to make room for it.Please.

And finally at level 37,Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro. And it is so,so cute! Aside from that,it gets a pretty good boost in all other stats.Slowpoke,or as we now call him slowbro, also gains a huge boost in special attack. So,it looks like Zen Headbutt will be outclassed soon.Oh yeah, you also have the option to learn Withdraw, don't.You don't need anymore defense.

Level 43 lets you learn Amnesia.A move that is useful for Slowbro, because it increases special attack by 2 stages.I recommend it.However,i'll just say it now,i prefer calm mind.Just putting that out there.

At level 49,you can learn the trademark of the Psychic type Pokemon. This move is so widespread, that even the weakest of Psychic types get it.What i am talking about,is Psychic.A move that deals 90 base special damage. And has 100% accuracy. While also having a 10% chance to lower the targets special defense.Listen to me: You would be a fool,to not take this move.

Level 55 gives you Rain Dance. This move will increase the power of water type moves by 50%,for about 3-7 turns. This is a good move. And i do recommend it if you want to build Slowbro as a support.Other than that, not much a reason to take it.When you do use it though, just be aware that your opponents can use this move to there advantage.

At level 62 you get..Oh not this again. Not a move i can't talk about, because its to complicated for me to articulate.Alrighty, lets try to explain this.

Psych Up copies the targets copies the positive and negative stat changes the opponent has,and gives it to the user..You got me? Nope? Let's try to simplify it.

Opponent uses calm mind. The result is increased Special attack, and Special defense.
I use Psych Up.
I now have increased special attack, and special defense.
See? Anyhow,i don't recommend it.It's to much of a gimmick for me to use.And believe me,i have tried to use it.But it's the timing is specific,it's just unreliable.

Level 68 gives you my most hated move in the entire Pokemon universe..I'm not even kidding.Heal Pulse heals 50% of the opponents health...I..I don't even...Forget this move exist.

Slowbro's set is fairly.Even better than some of the previous Pokemon i have reviewed.Onto the stats.

Stats Weaknesses & Abilities.
........................................................................................................................................................................................
Can i just say how much of a fan i am of Slowbro's stat usage? It's nearly perfect for me.But let's not be biased.

HP: 95
Attack: 75
Defense: 110
Sp. Atk: 100
Sp. Def: 80
Speed: 30

Slowpoke's health is big,and bulky. This practically assures you that you will not go down in one hit.

It's attack stat is fairly low,and for good reason. There are some physical moves that can work with Slowbro.

It's Defense is very good.Able to defend against plenty of physical attack with much ease.

Special attack is also really good. And couples well with the amount of special attack moves Slowbro learns.

Special Defense is kind of weak. And to be honest,i wish it would be a bit higher.

It's speed is awful, and for good reason.Slowbro is a huge giant, that is slow, but deals alot of damage.

Slowbro has a variety of weaknesses that you have to worry about. You're gonna have to worry about.Bug,Grass,Ghost,Electric,And dark type moves.Ugh.This is gonna be a toughie.

Bug can be defeated by a Simple ice beam.Don't worry,if you're at max health, you will surive the attack.

Grass can also be defeated by an Ice Beam, but chances are you're gonna need a bit more than that.I recommend getting a Talonflame to assist you. That's the best defense i came up with.

Eletric is easily defeated by something like a Tyranitar. And any generic Dragon type Pokemon would also help, despite not being optimal.Ferrothorn is also an option.

Dark is once again defeated by Tyranitar. However,Conkelldur would most likely be optimal.Scizzor is also a very good option.

That should about cover weaknesses.

Moving onto abilities,Slowbro has 2.The first being.

Oblivious: This ability prevents Slowbro from falling in love,or being taunted. This ability is very, very helpful.Especially against Taunt.

Own Tempo: This ability prevents Slowbro from being confused. While effective sometimes,i prefer Oblivious.I just found it to be statistically better.

Regenerator: And finally we have Regenerator. This move will restore ? of your Pokemon's health, when you switch it out.

...I'm kind of stuck here.On one hand Oblivious can stop the enemy from trying to shut you down when using a Calm Mind set, and on another,Regenerator can really help Slowbro up when it needs some health, and you have no way to heal it.And Oblivious can be somewhat helpful.

I either recommend Oblivious,or Regenerator. While Own Tempo can rarely be effective, trust me,confusion is one of the least things you have to worry about in the meta.Right now.

Competitive Play
........................................................................................................................................................................
There are a few ways you can play Slowbro. It can be a very good support,or one of the best mega's out there if used correctly. So these two sets will cover Slowbro using a mega stone, and Slowbro not using a mega stone. The first one being.

Slowbro @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 232 Def / 24 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Fire Blast/Ice Beam/Psyshock
- Toxic/Thunderwave
- Slack Off

This dearies is the classic set used in this gen the most. This set makes Slowbro a defensive wall of fat.Good luck getting through it.

The first move is Scald. This moves deal a decent 80 base damage, and has 100% accuracy. While also having a 30% chance to burn the target. The damage drop for the chance that the target will get burnt is,in my opinion, worth it.

The second move is rather tricky.Fire blast is very good at dealing damage to grass types, which is a big weakness, but chances are you already have another Pokemon you can switch out to to deal with it.Ice beam serves the same
purpose,And can take down unsuspecting fire types.

And finally Psyshock could be your psychic type move, which could deal with fighting type easily. This one is all up to you folks.Just go with statistics and see what you come across the most. The move you choose will be based off of that.

Toxic can slowly decay targets over time, but will have the amount of damage it deals reset after the opponent switches out.Thunderwave cripples the target forever, well,as long as the target does not heal itself somehow.I prefer thunderwave, but i have seen Toxic work better in certain sitiuations.

Slack Off will be your healing move.Whenever you're at low health, just use this.Just make sure if you're at low health, you can survive the attack so you can use Slack Off.

The item i prefer to use was leftovers. As this gave me alot of bulk, and almost guaranteed that i would never go down in one hit.I have not tried experimenting with any other items though. You may find something better.

The ability will be regenerator for its amazing ability to heal Slowbro once you switch out.Although if you're relying on Slowbro to cripple targets,Oblivious may be better.

Ev's are put in defensive stats for obvious reasons..We want to stay alive. And the nature is Bold to give us even more defense.

Now lets work on the next set.
.............................................................................................................................................................................................
This set will make use of a Mega stone.I created it myself.

Slowbro@ Mega Stone
Ability: Shell Armor
EV's: 252 HP/ 252 Def/ 4 SpA
Calm Nature
-Calm Mind
-Psyshock
-Scald
-Slack Off

This is a basic calm mind set used for Mega Slowbro. And if you know anything about the move calm mind, you should know how this set works just based on looking at the moveset. So lets get started.

Calm mind is obviously the first move. This will increase your special attack and special defense.Use this constantly to gain more power.

Psyshock deals physical damage, rather than special attack damage.Psychic is also an option.

Scald deals decent damage with a chance to burn.

Slack Off will take care of you.And chances are if you get about 2-3 calm minds in,you most likely wont even need it.

The item is..Well,a mega stone. Not much else to say.

The shell armor ability, while not optimal, will protect you from critical hits.So it's not completely terrible.

Ev's are mostly focused in defense, with a small bit focused on special attack to give a little bit of a boost in damage.

That's everything.Lets move onto final thoughts.

Final Thoughts
.......................................................................................................................................................................
..I..I have no idea how Slowbro started so good, then sucked for most of the generations, then came back swinging in gen 6.It's gotten so powerful, when very little about it has actually changed. But lets not be biased,Slowbro is pretty good right now.

It's moveset is pretty..Awful at first. But comes back swinging later on with pretty great moves. And it does not take to long to level. It's stats are fine. And while it admittedly has a few more weaknesses than average,it can find a way to counter a good deal of them.

It's abilities are actually pretty good.Competitively it's basically top tier.Second only to a really good Venasuar player. And it has a good number of ways to play it,so things don't get boring.

Slowbro was a Pokemon i really, really had fun with.I was very caught off guard at how good it is.Although, playing it effectively may take some time to get used to.

It's very slow on its feet, but is very hard to take down.It can be a decent support,or a very good calm mind user.In all honesty i'm out of stuff to say.Either that,or i just can't figure out anyway to articulate my sentences without spouting the same thing over and over again.Let's just get to the final score.

Final Score:3.8/5

Pros
.....................
Just try to take this Pokemon down in one hit without a boost in stats.I promise you,it's impossible! (A.K.A it has alot of health.)

Does not take to long to level.

Able to fill in a good number of rolls.

Fairy balanced stats.

Cons
...........................
You will eventually be faced with a weakness you have no counter towards. There's just to many to have a plan for.

Moveset is rather lacking to be honest.

It's not good in singleplayer..Like at all.

Takes a bit of time to get used to.As do most defensive Pokemon. You will have to develop instinct over the course of many losses.(For instance: Knowing when to switch out, predicting enemy movement, knowing when to heal,Etc.)

For alternate Pokemon recommendations, let me point you towards-

1.Venasuar: I'll admit it.I love Venasaur for this generation. It's my favorite starters,it powerful, and it fits my playstyle. The most popular set plays near identical to most ways you play Slowbro.

2.Keldeo: Perhaps you would like to play a bit more aggressively? Keldeo should do the trick for ya.

3.Clefable: Want to support your allies even more? I have a feeling you will like Clefable, alot.Klefki is overated anyway!

Welp, that's it for me.If you have any recommendations, feel free to tell me in the form of a private message or comment. To be honest that would be pretty cool, with so much Pokemon i lose my sense i direction sometimes. It's somewhat hard to figure out what i will talk about next.Anyhow, see yah next time! *Waves*

........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Now if you'll excuse me,i'm gonna do some anime shipping to past the time.Wave X Kurome for life!

(Aww,there so cute!)

Sure,it had more sets to use,but they were all still lack luster.

*Waves*

Now if you'll excuse me,i'm gonna do some anime shipping to past the time.Wave X Kurome for life!

(Aww,there so cute!)

Slowbro is pretty good stat wise, with the exception of its crippling base 30 speed. Personally, I've always liked Slowking more mainly for design purposes (I wouldn't mind if he got a mega evolution later down the road) and because of that awesome hat it has, but nonetheless, I think Slowbro is still a fairly good pokemon. It has great bulk and it can really abuse calm mind and trick room since its speed is low enough.

As a mega pokemon, it is just completely broken in my opinion. With base 180 defense and great HP with access to calm mind to top it off, this thing will be doing some serious walling.

Overall, great review as always, I enjoyed reading it. Keep up the great work. Just out of curiosity, what pokemon do you plan on reviewing next?
