Metroid is a series known for its exploration, isolation, abilities and atmosphere. A silent protagonist that just so happens to be a female badass. When Yoshio Sakamoto directed Super Metroid, he spawned arguably one of the greatest games EVER created, aside from Metroid Prime. He had good reputation until he gave us this piece of absolute dog crap.
Metroid Other M is a disgrace to the Metroid franchise. I'm not saying it is an unenjoyable experience (although i'd say it is personally), but this game takes everything the entire Metroid Series has ever established and practically forgets it or just throws it away completely. Samus is a silent protagonist. And while some may agree that she could use a voice at times, this game did it the wrong way. For example, Metroid Prime was a risky move. Nintendo believed that Metroid needed a 3D makeover. This means they can do one of three things. Mess up the transition completely, make it work but with flaws, or near perfectly transition it from 2D to 3D. They happened to make it perfect in that case. On the other hand, Other M was messed up completely. After all the experiences that Samus has had, all the things she has gone through, you'd think she'd sound less..... Monotone. Not to mention the whining. All she does is whine and complain. The real Samus takes on entire races of aliens and destroys planets. The ridley encounter in this game is a disgrace to the entire franchise. She apparently has PTSD now from all the past events she's gone through, yet this is the 3rd time she has killed ridley and only now does she freak out?
The voice actor sounds uninterested as can be when voicing a strong character like Samus Aran. She might as well be the voiceover for Sex & The City. She makes Samus sound bored when almost getting killed endless times on the "Bottle Ship".
Another thing, the underlying tones of motherhood are EXTREMELY annoying. "Code name, baby's cry". The "Bottle Ship". Metroid Other M. Put the M in front of Other and it spells Mother. Mertroid Other M. You abbreviate it and it spells M-O-M. Really Sakamoto? The baby Metroid storyline was perfected until Other M came out.
No Metroid fan will call Other M 'Cannon' to the rest of the franchise. ESPECIALLY since the storylines of the Prime series are considered non existent in the Other M universe. The Prime series is one of the best trilogies in game history according to most people who've played all three.
The story of Other M is all over the place, yet is simultaneously nowhere. This is due to the ENDLESS side stories that pepper this game. The deleter, Adam and Samus, Adam's brother, none of these side stories are of any importance to the game. Especially since the Adam and Samus story was revealed enough in Metroid Fusion. Some will disagree and say that there wasn't enough information about how Samus and Adam met, or how close they were, but the point was made in Fusion. He was her ex commander when she worked for the Federation, and he died in a sacrifice. Some storylines are better off unexplained because THIS is what happens. I personally think the only reason people defend Metroid Other M is because it is the latest game in the Metroid series, therefore it has to hold them off until a new game is released. The story of all the previous Metroid games was mostly learned through environment, or optional scanning. You weren't force fed a bland storyline that contradicted itself and made no sense. If the first Metroid game could tell such a basic story without dialogue whatsoever, so could this game.
The gameplay isn't bad in Other M, in fact it is flashy and fun, but the environments in which you have are too linear and boring to make use of. Once you receive Screw Attack, all you want is to fly over cliffs. But in this game, all the environments are simulated. This isn't good when you have a 3D game like this. It ruins the entirety of exploration withing the game. Also the transition from 3rd person to 1st person is bad. Especially with the control scheme and the restrictive movement whilst aiming. Otherwise, the gameplay is enjoyable. I feel like Metroid Other M would be a good game for a different franchise, just not Metroid. Not after all the character building we've seen in the past within Samus.
Metroid Other M is the only game in the franchise I hate. I love all the others with a passion. Even Hunters was ok for a DS title. But honestly, I hate Other M. It will never be part of the series in my opinion. No amount of defending this game could ever deter me from the idea that this is not a Metroid game, despite its title.
