Tag battles have been a staple since Dead or Alive 2, and maybe the most unique trait of the Dead or Alive series. Of course, the number of pairings has been rising in each installment, not only with the inclusion of new characters, but also with the progression of the storyline and the more varied interactions.

Although you can partner any two characters you want, certain pairings have special throws they can perform together and/or special animations before and after the battle. The tag throws are particularly interesting, not only for the animation involving both fighters but also because they do a lot of damage compared to other throws, so it’s always a plus to know which characters can be partnered in order to deliver these powerful moves.

Here’s an alphabetical list of all characters in Dead or Alive 5 and the characters they can be partnered with. The character written in red and capital letters is the active fighter, while the blue is the partner waiting in the sidelines. This information is useful, as some pairings can be one-sided, meaning one character can perform a tag throw with his/her partner but cannot be done vice-versa, and some characters may display more than one tag throw when paired with a certain character. Normally, the only tag throw available is the normal throw (circle button facing the opponent), but in cases where more than one can be performed, the button command will be listed too.

NOTE: Both Bass Armstrong and Lisa Hamilton are pro-wrestlers (Bass is actually retired, though), and thus use an alter ego inside the ring. By default, Bass doesn’t use his ring name, but Lisa does. Both fighters are listed here with their default name, Lisa’s being her ring name La Mariposa. Their alternate names are used when switching costumes (although Lisa looks awful in her casual outfit doing her many pirouettes and acrobatics).

AKIRA

Kokoro

Akira delivers a front kick to the opponent’s gut. Kokoro then appears behind him/her, and the two fighters synchronize two accolades.

Pai Chan

Akira tosses the opponent away with an accolade. Pai then grabs the opponent by one leg and makes him/her spin before hitting the ground.

Sarah Bryant

Akira pushes the opponent away with a forearm hit. Sarah catches the opponent and performs a Suplex-like throw on him/her.

AYANE

Hayate

Ayane puts her feet on the opponent’s back and launches him/her, with Hayate quickly entering the stage to stab the opponent even before Ayane releases him/her.

Jann Lee

Same move as above, but this time Ayane launches her opponent upwards, while Jann Lee delivers a powerful jumping kick.

Kasumi

Ayane grabs one of the opponent’s arms while Kasumi grabs the remaining one. Then both ninja spin around before synchronizing a jump and delivering a heavy kick to their opponent’s neck, effectively knocking him/her out.

Ryu Hayabusa

Ayane grabs the opponent by one side, while Hayabusa does the same from the opposite side. They then both deliver a synchronized hit to their opponent’s gut with their elbows, and then throw him/her over their heads.

BASS ARMSTRONG/MR. STRONG

Gen Fu

Bass performs a Double Hammer Arm that leaves the opponent in the ground. Gen Fu comes running from behind the still crouched Bass and jumps over him to deliver the final blow to the defenseless opponent.

Jann Lee

Bass launches the opponent very high behind him, and Jann Lee takes advantage of the speed the opponent has while falling to simply raise his leg and deliver a powerful blow.

Kasumi

Bass grabs the opponent’s hands and breaks his/her wrists, with Kasumi dashing behind Bass and jumping over him to land over the opponent, plummeting him/her to the ground and delivering a final palm strike to knock him/her out.

La Mariposa

Bass launches the opponent high into the air, a chance that La Mariposa takes advantage of by catching the opponent at the peak of the trajectory and smashing him/her to the ground in a very acrobatic fashion.

Bass spins the opponent around and launches him/her onto Rig, who delivers a powerful and acrobatic spinning kick to effectively knock out the opponent.

Tina Armstrong

Bass performs a Suplex on the opponent. Before he can finish it, Tina jumps to grab his opponent and ensure he/she falls down head-first.

BONUS: Forward+Throw

Bass grabs the opponent by the throat with one hand and lifts him/her up slightly. He then smashes him/her to the ground and stomps his/her face while Tina jumps to deliver a heavy body blow to the lying opponent.

NOTE: absolutely cute how Tina yells “PAPAAAA!!!!” before jumping.

Zack

Bass spins the opponent and sends him/her across the stage, with Zack performing a massive Airwalk to knock down the opponent.

BONUS: Forward+Throw

Bass performs a Hammer Arm, and then, he grabs Zack and launches him towards their opponent so Zack can deliver a massive head but finisher.

Bayman grabs the opponent in a judo-like fashion and breaks his/her arm before launching him/her over his head to the ground. Bass then enters the stage from above, falling into the opponent’s neck with his leg.

BONUS: Forward+Throw

Bayman pushes the opponent away. Bass then enters the stage, and together with Bayman performs a Linebacker to knock down their opponent and then run over him/her.

Bayman spins behind the opponent, immobilizing his/her arms. Christie then delivers a barrage of strikes to the defenseless opponent. Bayman then lets the opponent free, but also stunned, and Christie delivers the final strike to the gut.

Gen Fu

Bayman grabs the opponent and launches him/her towards Gen Fu, who delivers a powerful double palm strike to the flying opponent.

Ryu Hayabusa

Bayman pushes the opponent across the stage, with Hayabusa waiting  at the other side. He then turns his back on the opponent and crouches to deliver a powerful lift kick with both legs that sends the opponent flying.

Tina Armstrong

Bayman holds the opponent from one side and breaks his neck. Tina then enters the stage to grab one of the opponent’s legs, while Bayman grabs the opponent’s neck. Tina spins around before falling to the ground, seemingly breaking the opponent’s leg, while at the same time Bayman slams the opponent to the ground.

Zack

Bayman grabs the opponent by one arm and breaks it. Zack enters the stage, grabbing the other arm, and both fighters synchronize a head but to the opponent’s cranium before slamming him/her to the ground.

BRAD WONG

Eliot

Brad hops onto the opponent’s shoulders, sitting on them, while Eliot slides to hit the opponent’s legs, making him/her falling down with Brad still on top, but-smashing his/her thorax.

Gen Fu

Brad delivers a hit with his but, while Gen Fu starts running, Brad launches him and lands on top of the opponent, smashing his/her ribs with his back.

Kokoro

Brad head-buts the opponent to the ground, sitting on his/her legs. Meanwhile, Kokoro stands on the opponent’s upper torso, stomping him/her while performing a dance as Brad watches on, pretending to have a drink.

Zack

Grabbing the opponent’s arms, Brad slides between his/her legs, and delivers a kick to the neck while getting up behind him/her on a handstand position. Zack enters the stage and delivers a spinning elbow strike to the opponent’s face. Brad grabs him/her again by the neck with his legs to let Zack deliver a final left roundhouse kick. Brad then smashes the opponent to the ground with his legs, leaving the stage rolling and Zack jumping to avoid him.

CHRISTIE

Bayman

Christie spins behind the opponent performing an arm throw. After letting him/her go, Bayman enters the scene and holds him/her by the neck, while Christie delivers a low sweep so Bayman has an easier time smashing the opponent to the round in a very heavy fashion.

Brad Wong

Christie delivers a high front kick to the opponent’s face. Brad catches him/her off after the strike and launches him/her over with his back.

Helena Douglas

Christie grabs one of the opponent’s arms and Helena grabs the remaining one. Then, both fighters synchronize a kick to their opponent’s legs and launch him/her aside with a synchronized heavy slap.

Hitomi

Christie gets hold of the opponent and slaps him/her on the face to turn him/her back. Hitomi enters the stage and delivers a high roundhouse kick. Finally, releasing the opponent, both fighters synchronize a final hit, Christie performs a low sweep while Hitomi delivers a reverse roundhouse.

ELIOT

Brad Wong

Eliot starts with an accolade, with Brad entering the stage behind the opponent and delivering a similar hit. Eliot lifts the opponent up and puts him/her behind him. Brad then enters a fighting stance, Eliot crouches a little bit, Brad jumps over him and delivers a final jumping spin kick while laughing off the maneuver.

Gen Fu

This throw is synchronized since the very beginning. Both Eliot and Gen Fu deliver a hard hit to their opponent’s throat, another one to his/her gut, lifting him/her in the air and perform a final cross punch trademark of Gen Fu’s style.

Leifang

Eliot delivers a kick to the opponent’s shin to aid him in throwing him/her over his head. Before falling down to the ground, Leifang enters the stage and synchronizes a heavy accolade with Eliot.

Gen Fu head buts the opponent, while Brad comes from behind, rolls over Gen Fu and delivers a spinning kick to the opponent’s face.

Eliot

Exactly the same throw as when Eliot is the active fighter.

Helena Douglas

Gen Fu bashes the opponent with his shoulder. Helena then performs a double palm strike to the opponent’s back. Gen Fu strikes again, this time with an accolade, and Helena delivers the final blow with a shoulder bash.

Kasumi

Exactly the same throw performed with Ayane. The lack of originality displayed on this character starts to irritate me.

Leifang

Gen Fu delivers a shoulder strike while Leifang comes running. Gen Fu then helps Leifang throw over the opponent to the ground.

Ryu Hayabusa

Gen Fu uppercuts the opponent with a double palm strike. Then he and Hayabusa exchange a formal salute, Hayabusa kneeling down while Gen Fu simply sits down denoting approval, as the opponent graciously hits the ground.

Brad Wong

Hayate knees the opponent in the chin and teleports away, as Brad appears behind the opponent to deliver a powerful head but. It should be noted that Brad ends in a lying stance instead of standing up.

Christie

Hayate throws the opponent into the air with a judo-like throw placing his foot in his/her stomach and then thrusting him/her into the air behind him. As Hayate teleports away, Christie catches the opponent mid-air with a jumping kick.

Helena performs a double palm strike, and then one more strike that sends the opponent flying away. Kokoro enters the stage, grabbing the flying opponent and delivering the final strike.

Ryu Hayabusa

Both fighters maneuver around their opponent for a while, before grabbing him/her by one side each. They then synchronize a kick to the opponent’s legs that knocks him/her down, and finish with a synchronized stomp kick.

JANN LEE

Bayman

Jann Lee grabs the opponent by the neck with his leg, preparing to slam him/her to the ground. Before he can do that, Bayman enters the scene, and Jann Lee slams the opponent into his knee instead. Jann Lee leaves the stage as Bayman mounts over the opponent’s back and breaks his/her neck.

Gen Fu

Jann Lee pushes the opponent behind him with a low kick to his/her leg. Gen Fu then lifts the opponent up with a double palm strike to his/her chin before grabbing him/her by the back and slamming him/her to the ground.

Leifang

Jann Lee delivers a powerful blow to the opponent’s gut. Leifang then joins him and both deliver another blow before the final Double Dragon Knuckle.

Rig

Jann Lee delivers two jumping lift kicks that send the opponent flying. Rig then enters the stage and both fighters catch the falling opponent mid-air with one of their legs and plummet him/her to the ground.

Ryu Hayabusa

A throw very similar to the Helena and Kasumi tag. Jann Lee and Hayabusa deliver a high kick to the opponent’s head and then a powerful synchronized roundhouse finisher.

KASUMI

Ayane

Both ninja place their hands on the opponent’s shoulders, passing over his/her head. Then, they synchronize a somersault kick, Ayane in front of and Kasumi behind the opponent.

Bass Armstrong

Kasumi pushes the opponent away with a rear spinning kick. Bass then enters the stage and delivers a massive Buffalo Train to knock out the opponent.

Helena Douglas

Kasumi delivers a lift kick to the opponent’s throat and then tosses him/her to the ground over her head. Helena then places her hands on Kasumi’s back to propel herself in the air and to land on the opponent’s upper torso with her legs.

Hitomi

Kasumi performs the same maneuver as when tagging with Brad. This time, the final kick sends the opponent flying upwards, and Hitomi takes the chance to deliver a powerful jumping spin kick.

Ryu Hayabusa

Kasumi performs a high speed attack, seemingly phasing through the opponent, and Hayabusa does the same from the other side of the stage.

Zack

Kasumi hops onto the opponent’s shoulders, standing up. She then jumps away, and grabs the opponent to send him/her away with a double foot launch. At this point, Zack enters the stage to deliver a heavy flying head but.

KOKORO

Akira

The same exact throw performed with Akira as the active fighter. Since the active fighter has changed, it’s Kokoro who delivers the initial strike (a punch to the gut, instead of a front kick) before the two synchronized accolades.

Ayane

Kokoro performs a double foot launch. Ayane then catches the opponent mid-air and throws him/her to the ground over her head.

LA MARIPOSA/LISA HAMILTON

Bass Armstrong

La Mariposa hops on the opponent’s shoulders, while Bass enters the stage and lifts the opponent with his shoulders. He then launches him/her away, with La Mariposa performing an acrobatic maneuver to ensure the opponent hits the ground face up.

NOTE: Bass and his repertoire of grunts denoting his overly manly demeanor make him somewhat hilarious.

Hitomi

La Mariposa lies down in the ground and holding the opponent’s arms from behind, effectively breaks his/her arms by pushing his/her back with both her legs. Hitomi then enters the stage to take advantage of the defenseless opponent and delivers three powerful blows before La Mariposa lets her opponent free, with the last blow sending the opponent away.

Tina Armstrong

La Mariposa rolls over the opponent and launches him/her away. With the opponent lying in the ground, both Tina and La Mariposa synchronize a jump and land in her opponent’s upper torso with their feet.

LEIFANG

Helena Douglas

Yet another throw synchronized since the beginning. Leifang and Helena deliver a palm strike to the opponent’s gut, then spin behind him/her to deliver a back elbow strike and finish with a shoulder bash.

Tina Armstrong

Leifang spins behind the opponent. Tina enters the stage running, and together with Leifang, slams the opponent into the ground face first.

Both Mila and Tina take down their opponent, and perform a leg throw at the same time

PAI CHAN

Akira

Pai delivers two palm strikes to the opponent, before letting Akira deal the final blow.

Sarah Bryant

Pai spins the opponent around and throws him/her aside. Sarah then enters the stage to deliver three kicks, first a jumping knee strike, next a spinning kick and one final spin kick that plummets the opponent into the ground.

RIG

Bass Armstrong

Rig delivers a kick to the opponent’s face, before launching him/her upwards with his leg doing a 360. Bass then catches the opponent mid-air, and uses his shoulders and neck to break the opponent’s back upon landing, and still repeats the back-breaking moves twice before slamming the opponent into the ground.

Jann Lee

Another throw synchronized since the beginning. Rig and Jann Lee deliver a high kick to their opponent’s head, and finish with a jumping roundhouse kick.

RYU HAYABUSA

Ayane

Hayabusa uppercuts the opponent with a palm strike to the chin, sending him/her flying. Ayane then runs to Hayabusa, who propels her into the air, and delivers a heavy kick with both her legs to the still airborne opponent.

Bass Armstrong

Hayabusa does the same move as with Ayane, only that this time Bass grabs the opponent mid-air by the legs, plummeting the opponent to the ground head-first.

Bayman

Hayabusa and Bayman both grab the opponent by the throat with one hand, and slam him/her to the ground.

Gen Fu

Same throw as when Gen Fu is the active fighter. This time, it’s Hayabusa who uppercuts the opponent with a palm strike to the chin before doing the salute.

Hayate

Exactly the same throw as when Hayate is the active fighter. This time, Hayabusa sends the opponent flying before he and Hayate synchronize a high speed attack on the airborne opponent.

Jann Lee

Hayabusa performs his trademark palm uppercut, while Jann Lee runs to him. Hayabusa propels Jann Lee into the air, and he delivers a jumping side kick to the airborne opponent.

Kasumi

Yet again, Hayabusa performs his palm uppercut. Kasumi grabs the opponent mid-air and, placing her feet on his/her neck, she plummets to the ground.

Tina Armstrong

Holding the opponent by the neck with one hand, both Hayabusa and Tina spin around the opponent and effectively break his/her neck.

SARAH BRYANT

Akira

Sarah performs a low sweep, while Akira punches the opponent in the back, lifting him/her up a little. Both fighters then synchronize a final hit that smashes the opponent into the ground, Sarah performs a stomp kick while Akira performs a double wrist strike.

Pai Chan

Sarah performs three kicks, the first to the face, the second to the gut and the third again to the face. The stunned opponent then backs away a little, a chance that both Sarah and Pai take advantage of by synchronizing one last kick, Sarah to the back and Pai to the face.

TINA ARMSTRONG

Bass Armstrong

Another synchronized throw. Tina and Bass grab the opponent and perform a Suplex. As simple as that.

BONUS: Forward+Throw

Tina knees the opponent in the thorax, and tosses him/her aside. Bass is waiting on the other side, and charges a Buffalo Train, while Tina performs a Lariat at the same time, effectively knocking out the opponent with both hits to the neck.

NOTE: Again, Tina yelling “PAPAAA!!!” and Bass showing one more entry of his repertoire of grunts. No wonder why this is one of my favorite tag teams.

EXTRA BONUS: Normal throw from behind

Tina performs a Suplex on the opponent. Bass enters the stage, and takes the chance to perform a Suplex of his own.

Bayman

Tina tosses the opponent aside. Bayman enters the stage and delivers a low sweep while Tina delivers a neck cutter kick at the same time.

Kasumi

Tina crouches and lifts the opponent with her shoulders. Kasumi enters the stage, jumps onto the opponent’s shoulders and knocks him/her to the ground with a somersault throw.

La Mariposa

Tina performs a move similar to La Mariposa’s Corbata without throwing the opponent. La Mariposa then enters the stage, and both fighters launch the opponent high into the air, and after a synchronized back somersault,  they jump to grab the opponent mid-air and plummet themselves to the ground, their feet on the opponent’s back and the latter hitting the ground face-first.

BONUS: Forward+Throw

Tina grabs the opponent by the arms, and starts spinning around with the opponent on her back. La Mariposa enters the scene, and together with Tina, smashes the opponent to the ground.

Leifang

Tina performs a throw similar to La Mariposa’s Corbata to knock the opponent into the ground. Leifang then comes running, and Tina propels her into the air so she can land onto the opponent with her back.

Mila

Tina performs an arm lock throw to launch her opponent over her head, and before he/she can get up she delivers a kick to the back of his/her neck. Mila then enters the stage, and both fighters grab their opponent from behind to effectively break both his/her arms by placing their feet on his/her back.

Ryu Hayabusa

Tina grabs the opponent by the legs, and spins around before launching him/her away, in a similar fashion of an athlete throwing the hammer. Hayabusa enters the stage just before Tina releases the opponent, and holds onto him/her to ensure he/she hits the ground head-first.

Sarah Bryant

Tina spins behind the opponent, with Sarah following suit. Both fighters then synchronize a heavy kick: Sarah delivers a roundhouse to the opponent’s gut while Tina performs a jumping spin kick to the opponent’s face.

Leifang

Both Zack and Leifang knee the opponent, Zack in the gut and Leifang in the back. Zack then knees the opponent again as Leifang takes advantage of the hit to smash the opponent into the ground.

Ryu Hayabusa

Zack spins behind the opponent, immobilizing his/her arms. Hayabusa enters the stage to deliver a massive spinning head but to the opponent’s thorax.

Tina Armstrong

Zack delivers a jumping head but to the opponent that leaves him/her stunned. Zack then crouches, and Tina takes the chance to use Zack as a platform and deliver a heavy jumping knee strike to the opponent’s face.

BONUS: Forward+Throw

Zack spins behind the opponent and immobilizes his/her arms. Tina then delivers a massive drop kick to the opponent’s thorax.

NOTE: Strangely, this throw doesn’t knock out the opponent, leaving him/her standing up instead.

Tag battles have been a staple since Dead or Alive 2, and maybe the most unique trait of the Dead or Alive series. Both fighters are listed here with their default name, Lisa’s being her ring name La Mariposa. Their alternate names are used when switching costumes (although Lisa looks awful in her casual outfit doing her many pirouettes and acrobatics).

I think you did a good job with this partner game guide for Dead or Alive 5. You made sure that there was enough detail for each pairing and the moves they can do together. You did a fantastic job and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.
