Unlike most walkthroughs that give you a detailed account of the game (including shops, enemy stats, dialogues, etc.), mine will be different. It will focus on 1) making you move forward, 2) maximize you level and 3) get new characters. I will point only towards important treasures (potions, vital weapons and objects) and forgo money and herbs. By grinding your levels like I did they will be of little use to you.

Finally I will only write details until you grinded your levels so much (battle 16) that you promote to level 20, grind some more and will basically finish the battle with great ease – look at the videos of the game I posted. Increasing your level beyond p10 (when you promote at level 20) usually yields little significant gains other than costing more for resurrection.

So for the purpose of this guide, I will use the following terms

  • -          Good to fight until: the level until which you can fight an enemy and earn at least 10 experience points. Starting at that level, you earn less than 10 exp. unless you kill an enemy in one hit, in which case you still earn 12 exp. for your effort. For example: 5 means that you can still earn 12 exp. by killing an enemy in one hit, although you would normally get less than 10 exp. at level 5. Note that enemies appearing in several fights may have different worthiness. In the Shade Abbey for example, the two zombies between the benches yield less experience.
  • -          Objective: how to end the battle. Usually by killing a “boss” or reaching the next town. If not, it’s by killing all enemies
  • -          A “p” next to someone’s level means after promotion.

1.          Introduction

After your training go through the door and talk to Lowe. Then walk back to Varios and talk to him. After he leaves go back talking to Lowe. When you can control Max again, you have the option of using the regular gameplay and walk towards the castle or be very patient and have that villager walk towards the guards, blocking one of them and letting you battle alone… Let’s stick to regular gameplay.

Once in the castle go talk to the King (straight ahead). Accept his request and walk away. After a few steps, Luke, Tao, Ken, Hans and Lowe will join the Force! Go back to the King – he gives you 100 gold – and get out of town. You will be automatically transported to the site of the first battle.

Before you even start that fight, have Max walk out and go to the house on the right. On the left of the house you will meet Gong, who will join you. Now go to the first battle

Battle 1

Goal: kill the Rune Knight.

Enemies you face

5 goblins. Worth fighting until level 5

2 dark dwarves. Worth fighting until level 6

1 rune knight. Worth fighting until level 7

Walk out of the fortress after the battle and the second battle will start. Should you need to save, walk to the house where you found Gong or cast Egress.

Battle 2

Goal: Reach Guardiana

Enemies you face

5 goblins, 3 dark dwarves, 2 rune knights.

2.          The Destruction of Guardiana

When entering the ruined town, go to the right of the weapon shop and recruit Gort – just talk to him. Then walk up to the castle.

After a cut scene where Varios dies, his daughter Mae pops in. She will join you after the King dies. Before leaving the castle, go to a door on the extreme left to get a defense potion, a power potion and a few other goodies. After that, exit town for the next battle

Battle 3

Goal: reach Alterone

Enemies you face:

5 giant bats (can put you to sleep). Worth fighting until level 7.

5 rune knights and 5 dark dwarves.

3.          Alterone

When entering go around the first house and cross a bridge to the weapon shop. Talk to a man near a statue and answer yes to both his questions. Outside the weapon shop, push the cart towards the lady and she will push you in the water (you will get a power potion). Get in the castle.

Go behind the throne (straight ahead from the entrance) to the left to get a bread of life, a defense potion and other goodies. Talk to the King and follow him downstairs. Talk to Cain. Once you gain control again search the door. Khris will free you and join you. Walk the underground passage to the next battle; you can stop by the headquarters if you want too.

Battle 4

Goal: kill all the enemies

Enemies you will face:

1 dark mage. Worth fighting until level 6

2 snipers. Worth fighting until level 8

4 bats, 4 rune knights and 4 dark dwarves.

After the battle, go back to the King and answer yes. Then go south and west and examine the “dragon head”. Say yes and enter the door to conclude the first chapter.

4.          Rindo

Enter the village. Go to the far right of the village (where the lone boat stands) and enter the gray-brick house to get a speed ring. It increases agility AND acts like Egress. Go to the house above where an inventor is finishing his creation, Guntz. Talk to both. The next house to the left is the mayor’s. Talk to him and leave town for the next battle.

Battle 5

Goal: reach Manarinara

Enemies you will face:

4 zombies. Worth fighting until level 9

3 dark mages, 2 snipers, 3 dark dwarves and 4 giant bats

5.          Manarinara

Enter town and walk straight to Anri. Go to the far right (in the library) and go to the room right before the stairs. Search the, er, machine to get Domingo Eggs; hold on to these. Now climb up the stairs and talk to Anri. You can also talk to Arthur if you want.

Now, go back to where you first met Anri and enter the door. Talk to Otrant (the closest person to the door). Say yes and go down the stairs. Talk to the person blocking your way and enter the next battle.

Battle 6

Goal: kill the skeleton

Enemies you will face:

1 skeleton. Worth fighting until level 10

3 zombies, 2 snipers, 4 dark mages and 5 giant bats.

After defeating the skeleton, grab the Orb of Light from the chest behind him. You can also grab the Power Ring straight down below the skeleton (increases attack and can cast boost. Can also break). Once you’re done, go out and head north through the opening doors. Use the Orb at the end of the corridor.

After the dialogue go back up. Talk to Otrant and go back up (in the library) to talk to Arthur, who will join you. Exit Manarinara back to Rindo.

Go back to the mayor and talk to him. Say yes and go back to the port. Suddenly, a circus has appeared! Talk to the person blocking your way and enter the tent for your next battle.

Battle 7

Goal: defeat Marionette

Enemies you will face

1 Marionette. It’s a boss so there’s generally no level limit

2 dire clowns. Worth fighting until level 9

3 evil puppets. Worth fighting until level 8

3 mannequins (can poison you). Worth fighting until level 10

3 giant bats.

You can get a defense potion in the upper-right treasure chest. Exit the tent and go talk to the mayor. Go back to the port and enter the boat. When in control again, exit the boat and go talk to the mayor once again (say yes). Exit town and go to Shade Abbey

6.          Shade Abbey

This place is really short. You only need to talk to the priest (in a room to the right of the door leading to the chapel). Once it’s done go back to the main door and walk straight until you enter the next battle.

Battle 8

Goal: defeat all enemies

Enemies you will face

1 ghoul. Works like a boss (strong resistance to magic including Blaze) so there are no limits.

6 zombies (the 4 above the benches are worth quite a bit, until at least level 12) and 3 skeletons.

After the battle, exit the chapel – Balbaroy joins you. Talk to Amon, who’s blocking your way, and exit the Abbey to end the chapter.

7.          Bustoke

Go up the two flights of stairs and go to the house on the left. Talk to the lady on the right and the one on the left; it’s Diane and she will join you (I find her better than Hans). Go back down one flight of stairs, go as far right as possible and enter the next battle.

Battle 9

Goal: defeat the master mage.

Enemies you will face

1 master mage. Worth fighting until level 15+.

1 lizardman. Worth fighting until level 13

2 dark elves. Worth fighting until level 11

4 dark priests. Worth fighting until level 11

2 dark mages and 6 skeleton.

Enter the cave and get the moon stone. You can also get a Sugoi Mizugi, hidden below the rope on the left-hand side of the screen (give it to Tao). Just search and it will appear

Go back to Bustoke and enter the first house you meet. Talk to the alchemist, say yes and exit his house. Now, on the same level, go as far left as you can. Go down the stairs and search the machine. Exit the house. After the scene go back up and exit the house.

Now, enter the house next to the one where you met Diane. Exit it from the back and go to the left, down a flight of stairs. Talk to the “prison guard” and say yes. Enter Zylo’s cell and use Lunar Dew; he will join your team. Go back through the house and go as far right as you can to exit town and enter the next battle.

Battle 10

Goal: reach the bridge in the upper-right corner.

Enemies you will face

4 Pegasus knights. Worth fighting until level 16/p8

2 of each: dark mages, dark elves, lizardmen and dark priests, and 5 skeletons.

After the battle enter the bridge and you will enter the next battle.

Battle 11

Goal: defeat the silver knight that pushed Pele.

Enemies you will face

1 laser eye.

2 silver knights. Worth fighting until level 13/p3

2 dark priests, 3 Pegasus knights, 3 dark elves and 5 lizardmen.

After the fight Pele joins you and the chapter ends. You can also get Anri a Kitui Huku; it's left of where the snipers are, hanging in the air.

8.          Pao

Go in the first house to your right and talk to Elliott (your answer doesn’t matter in the end). Don’t forget to talk to the man walking by the house of the far right, below the wagons.

Go to the very first wagon and get a bread of life. In the wagon where the Queen is, get a leg of haste in the treasure to the right. Talk to the Queen twice (saying yes the second time) and the wagons will leave.

Right after Kokichi will appear flying and join you. Walk between the tracks to the left and talk to Vankar so he can join you (say yes). When ready, leave town for the next battle.

Battle 12

Goal: defeat Elliott

Enemies you will face

1 Elliott. He’s a boss so there’s no limit on fighting him

5 lizardmen (one ALWAYS drops a heat axe), 3 dark priests, 4 Pegasus knights and silver knights.

1 artillery. Worth fighting until level 16.

Enter Pao and go to the house next to the weapon wagon (the first one below you when you enter). Say yes to the man of the right and Domingo will hatch! Talk to him and he will join. Note that he’s already “promoted” and cannot change appearance. Also his experience curve is nearly exponential; he keeps gaining experience when other would earn less than 10 exp. so ignore the chart for him. Because of that he's superior to Anri - and his shell gives him high defense.

Once you gain control go to the fence on the right and Guntz will join you. Exit town and go to the fortress for your next battle.

Battle 13

Goal: kill both enemies guarding the doors.

Enemies you will see

2 hellhound. Worth fighting until level 18

1 artillery, 3 dark priests and Pegasus knights and 6 silver knights.

After the battle, enter the right door (once guarded by the artillery) and exit in the village. Go in the small house (above the shop) and go down the stairs. Talk to Earnest and he will join you. Go back outside and walk to the right. Talk to the man guarding the doors to the port. Enter your next battle

Battle 14

Goal: Defeat Balbazak

Enemies you will meet

1 Balbazak. He’s a boss so he has no level limit

5 seabats. Worth fighting until level 19/p8

3 artillery, 2 dark priests, hellhound and silver knights and 1 evil puppet.

At the end of the battle, answer yes to Balbazak’s question and the chapter will end.

9.          At Sea

After a brief maneuvering of your ship you will engage in your next battle (note that it’s still possible to cast Egress/walk down the stairs to see the priest and your HQ).

Battle 15

Goal: kill all enemies

Enemies you will face

2 shellfish (in green, can poison you). Worth fighting until level 19/p8

3 conch (darker shell). Worth fighting until level p6/16

4 seabats, 3 Pegasus knights.

After the battle a mermaid will guide you to her down. Once you get control get to the castle on the life. There is a bread of life and a defense potion on the right side. The left side has a shower of cure and a mobility ring (+2 movement).

After that go back to the port and take a boat where the pier is of a lighter color. Go south where a mermaid is blocking the way and talk to her. Say yes and proceed.

Once you can move go up the stairs. Talk with the friar and exit the house (you can go back to town now if you wish). Go down the stairs and onto the “diamond”. Follow the skeleton up to the next battle.

Battle 16

Goal: Defeat the master mage.

Enemies you will face

1 master mage (level p10), 3 worms (level p9), 4 seabats, 5 skeletons (they are stronger; level 19/p9) and 5 hellhounds.

This is the battle where you can get everyone to level 20 and promote them. Don’t forget that people get slightly weaker when promoted, but their stats increase much quicker and higher after that. So I will only put in parenthesis the maximum level if my videos contain them.

By the end of the battle everyone should be at level p2 or 3. Once you gain control, walk down. Go back on your boat and back to the castle. Talk with the King (your answer doesn’t matter) and you will be on your ship once more… only to fall into another battle.

Battle 17

Goal: destroy every enemy

Enemies you will meet

1 gargoyle (level p10), 2 Pegasus knights, 5 seabats, 6 conch and 4 seashells (some enemies appear later one). After the battle the chapter ends.

10. Rudo

Once you gain back control talk to the little girl on your right. Follow her and talk to Karin (all in red). Exit the house.

Go to the left and enter the door straight north of the dragon statue. Follow the path to a flight of descending stairs and talk to the dog. Walk through the door and speak with Krin (say yes).

West of there (above the shops) enter the house and go up and up. You will find Lyle (by saying) yes) and he will join you (he is better than Diane). Further to the right in the village (after the door you first exit), enter two doors and get a holy staff for Lowe in the right-hand chest.

To exit town, talk to the blond boy, who will push stones out of the way. Enter the next battle.

Battle 18

Goal: Reach Dragonia or defeat Durahan (who talks when you get into the battle).

Enemies you will meet

1 durahan (level p18), 1 high priest (level p11), 5 golems (level p13) and artillery, 4 master mages (level p10) and 3 worms (enemies appear through the fight).

11. Dragonia

When you enter Dragonia go in the house north of the “fireplace”. The treasure contains a halberd, the best lance (it can cast bolt 1). Go down the stairs and follow the path. Enter the house and talk to Bleu until he’s cornered. Then talk to Karin. Take the shower of cure and go back outside to the main place.

After a scene, talk to Bleu and he will join you. He’s weak but he’s really worth levelling up (plus he flies). Go back outside and talk to Cain. He tells you to go to your HQ. DO it and come back out to prompt you next fight.

Battle 19

Goal: defeat Cain.

Enemies you will face

1 Cain (level p19), 2 durahan, 2 high priests, 3 gargoyles and master mages, and 4 golems.

(Note that the treasure in which you got the halberd gives you a shower of cure during battle).

After the battle Cain’s mask will break to reveal… Ziggy Stardust! Once you get control enter the door between two torches. Walk straight to the door and then go back near the door to find Cain. Follow him downstairs. After a scene exit Dragonia and return to Rudo.

Go talk to Karin, and then go talk to Krin (answer no). Go back to Karin and exit Rudo for your next fight.

Battle 20

Goal: reach Demon Castle (the giant skull head at the bottom of the screen)

Enemies you will face

3 gargoyles, 2 high priests and bowriders (level p8), 3 belial (level p15) and 4 master mages and golems

Just enter Demon Castle once you’re ready.

Battle 21

Goals: Defeat Mishella and get the Sword of Light (make sure you get everything else if needed because you WON’T be able to come back!)

Enemies you will face

1 Mishella and High priest, 2 durahan, 3 gargoyles, 4 golems and master mage and 3 bowriders and belial.

The Sword of Light is right next to Mishella’s throne (casts bolt 2), there’s a power potion in the lower-right corner, there’s an evil ring to the left (cursed when equipped but casts Bolt 3; can break and can only be used by wizards), and there’s a white right furthest right of the throne (casts aura 2, can break and can only be equipped by priests of the hero. Increases defense) and there’s a black ring left of the throne (cursed, but can cast Blaze 3. Can only be used by wizards and can break). After achieving the goals the chapter ends.

12. Prompt.

Once you gain control walk left and take the small bridge south of your HQ. Follow the road to the right and go down another ladder next to a house with no door. Then walk to the left and enter the seemingly ruined building… which is the castle.

Go down all the stairs and follow the way to an elevated staircase. Take it and talk to the King (your answer doesn’t matter). Once you gain control examine the door and get out after talking to the merchant. Return to the King.

Talk to him and exit behind the throne to as far south as you can. Talk to Ziggy Stardust and once you gain control exit the castle. Before exiting Prompt return up one level and walk left to a house with a note on it. Examine it and Mushashi the Samurai will join you. He will be a valuable asset. Now exist town to your next battle.

Battle 22

Goal: Reach Tower of Ancients

Enemies you will face:

1 minotaur, 2 wyvern (level p19), jet, torch eye and belial, and 4 durahan (one will ALWAYS drop a doom blade, which can instantly kill but is NOT cursed).

Enter the tower. The first treasure chest you encounter is a devil lance; it’s cursed so sell it for money if need be. The next chest upstairs is a turbo pepper (movement +1-2). Exit that room to enter your next battle.

Battle 23

Goal: Defeat Demon Master

Enemies you will face

1 demon master (level p12), 2 wyverns, 3 steel claws and torch eyes, 4 jets and 5 ice worms (level p16).

The treasure inside the battle contains a Valkyrie, the best lance (it can only be obtained inside the battle; opening the chest at any other time gives you nothing).

Once you gain control walk upstairs. Walk towards Dark Sol. After a scene exit the tower and go back to Prompt.

Go back to the King and talk to him. You will receive the Sword of Darkness (cursed, can cast Desoul). Walk downstairs and turn left. Always walk straight until you see the “walled eye” (the same as in Chapter 2) and use the Orb of Light. Walk on the teleportation device.

Walk to the right and use the Orb of Light. Talk to Adam (left of the eye). After a scene you will enter your next battle.

Battle 24

Goal: Kill Chaos

Enemies you will face:

1 chaos, 2 minotaurs, 3 demon masters and 4 torch eye, jets and ice worms.

Be careful at the start of the battle as there are demon masters nearby. Defeat them if you’re quicker than they are or you’re in big trouble.

After the battle walk straight and put both swords in the appropriate altars. Take the newly created Chaos Breaker (can cast Freeze 3). Go behind the altar and walk to the eye symbol. After the dialogue exit right.

Walk back to the King and talk to him. Then exit the castle and exit town for the final battle of the chapter.

Battle 25

Goal: Defeated the Armed Skeleton guarding the wall

Enemies you will face

1 high priest, 2 demon masters, 3 minotaurs and horsemen (level p23), and 4 armed skeletons and Cerberus.

The chapter will end once you pass the gate.

13. Runefast

Walk to Runefast and enter the village. Right when you enter, search the bush with white flowers. Hanzou the Ninja will join.

Enter the castle and talk to the person looking like Otrant. Exit the castle and go down to the weapon shop (in the lower-left corner). Continue walking left until you enter the castle.

Walk straight behind Dark Sol to get into your next battle.

Battle 26

Goal: Defeat everyone

Enemies you will face

2 high priests, 3 of each: horseman, Cerberus, armed skeleton (ones drops a Atlas) and blue dragon and 5 chimeras.

The two chests contain a halberd and an Atlas axe (can cast Blaze 3).

Watch for the chimeras as they spew a lot of fire. After the battle Ramaladu will transform the blocks into robots.

Battle 27

Goal: Defeat Ramaladu

Enemies you will meet:

1 Ramaladu, 6 steel claws and torch eyes.

After the battle walk down and turn left to a newly revealed staircase. Once outside go as far west as you can and USE the Chaos Breaker. Go inside the castle that looks like where you had your first battle and use the teleportation device. Battle will ensue

Battle 28

Goal: Defeat Colossus that casts Bolt 3 (he’s a the top of the “body” when you start the fight).

Enemies you will face

3 Colossus (one casting each element), 2 horsemen, 3 of each: jet, armed skeleton and blue dragon, and 6 chimeras.

After the fight climb up the stairs to the next fight.

Battle 29

Goal: Defeat Dark Sol

Enemies you will face

1 Dark Sol, 2 blue dragons and high priests, 5 steel claws and 8 torch eyes.

Please note that if you cast Egress, you will have to start that fight again even if you kill Dark Sol.

After the fight, you will immediately be plunged in the next one.

Battle 30

Goal: Defeat all 3 of Dark Dragon’s heads.

Enemies you will face

3 Dark Dragon heads and 2 armed skeleton (regenerate every turn unless you place someone on the spot).

DD can resurrect if you take too long to kill it. And if Max deals the final blow he will perform a special move.

Enjoy the ending!

Unlike most walkthroughs that give you a detailed account of the game (including shops, enemy stats, dialogues, etc.), mine will be different.

Wow, you've shown me that you're really good at making game guides to. This guide is extremely detailed and I think you did an excellent job making sure that you made it as accurate as you possibly could. gamerforlifeforever2 : Thanks. This game was very easy to grind and move through because monsters move in VERY predictable manners. I wanted to include it but it means I would have had to restart ALL OVER AGAIN!! It's too long.

Your welcome. It's good to hear this game is easy to grind and move through, because these kind of RPG's are generally hard for me to play. I usually prefer traditional turn based RPG's like Final Fantasy or Pokemon.

gamerforlifeforever2 : I actually find turn-based RPGs to be easier since battle are very predictable. And level grinding (at least for the Shining Series) is easy; it just takes times.
