What's more interesting? That there's roughly 800 million copies of Steam games in circulation or that nearly half a billion of them have not even been installed? That's right, nearly 500 million games on Steam have been either bought or redeemed yet never played and the number only continues to grow.
At the moment, 37% of all steam games haven't been played, which had gone up by almost 20% since last year and up by 5% so far in 2015.
It just so happens that a lot of money is being lost as a result of this since most of these u played games come from the back end of bundles such as Humble Bundle. Not only are the developers essentially giving away their games for free, but a lot of false info is recorded as a result and impacts sales because if a certain amount of people have the game, then there's a general idea of how much feedback the game should receive as well as promotion whether it be through word of mouth and recommendations, reviews, videos or other means.
As a result, more people are owning the game yet less people are actually knowing about it and in some cases, positive feedback of a game could decrease by as much as 20% as opposed to if the game had been sold alone which would have led to people buying the game for the purpose of playing it.
With more sites offering more and more bundles, the amount of games that are left u played and the amount of false information will only continue to rise. As a matter of fact, its possible that by the end of 2015, more than half of every game in circulation could be u played and as for a number, it could easily hit one billion games shortly after that.
What are your thoughts? Do you think that unplayed free games should have such a large effect on sales? One thing I think of is how there could be a bad game in a bundle and as a result, millions of copies are sold as part of it yet people think its good because of how many copies were sold yet become disappointed when they actually get it.
