Oooookay, so I have super-duper been craving to rp / write a story with someone.  I haven't written (alone or with a partner) in quite some time, and that itch just needs to be scratched! It's been driving me batty!

I've been trying to find role play partners for a few days now... and despite looking on sites designated for such enterprises.... I've had absolutely no luck.  I'm sure someone on vizzed will hit me up, but there's also the matter of finding the RIGHT partner.  See, I love detailed, lengthy posts that drive a plot.  I try to include most senses in my own contributions and strive to write at LEAST a paragraph. Often though, I'll write two or three.  I do recognize that there are cases in which a sentence or two will suffice, though.

Of course, I also have a few limits for various reasons. No: non-family friendly things, extreme gore, magic, supernatural elements, foul language, or canons. I'm also not big into teen or nonsensical drama.

Some people don't understand what 'no magic' or 'no supernatural elements' means... and immediately assume it means no fun. To those people: Where is your creative side? YES, fantasy is okay! YES, unrealistic things are fine! YES, it's okay to be imaginative! Have you ever seen Dr. Who? The show does a great job of providing elements that -seem- magical or supernatural, but aren't. Instead, the events, characters, and creatures are simply alien in nature. Basically, you can probably include elements that aren't natural, so long as they don't have supernatural / demonic reasons for existing.

Hopefully this clarifies things instead of making them more confusing.

So what am I into?

I ADORE a challenge. This means I'm up for most anything. If you want to present an idea to me... please, by all means do so. If you want to plan a little, I'm also up for that, though I like to see where a role play takes itself.

I AM interested in long term role plays / story writing.

I do not encourage living vicariously through writing.

I do not like text speak.

I enjoy playing one character and maybe using other characters to supplement the story. However, this is a difficult thing to manage, as writers need to agree if minor characters can be controlled by one person only, or by both parties.

I am totally up for having more than one partner to contribute to one story.

I love surprises.

I love depth.

Uh.... I'm not sure what else to say.  Most of you on vizzed know me well enough to understand what I'm looking for (I think?).

I do have some ideas, but I'll save them in the interest of hearing YOUR ideas.  Remember, I do want true authors who are willing to commit to a story and really drive it along.  If you have an idea, please say so here, in pm, or in my email.    If you want to write with me and don't have an idea, let me know as well... I'll toss some of my ideas your way.

(And I must emphasize... depth is important to me.  I'm not talking about friends fighting and breaking up, or people taking care of pets. I'm talking about stories with meaningful relationships and complex plots.    *crosses fingers hopefully* )

Oh, one more tiny note... obviously, I don't have a lot of free time on my hands anymore (if you read my last created thread / ramble).  Thus, you shouldn't expect more than one or two posts a day... maybe even a post every other day.)

Singelli :   I'll play along. Writing is an excellent skill of mine that I treasure and would like to share.

I've never done a communal role-play story before so I'm not really sure what is expected. I'll count on you to take the lead. I don't have any idea what you want the story to be about yet but I'll sure try to follow what you demonstrate.

Your ideas will have to be the basis of the story. You started this after all.

Gosh, lots to talk about. Is this going to be just the discussion thread or do we just post the story segments here and discuss it privately from here on in? Hmm.

I'm intrigued at the rule of "No canons."

Do you mean current existing canon or are you denying the opportunity for characters to develop a spirituality as their role and progression unfolds?

And I'm in.  Are we playing via email or are we going live on here?

supernerd117 :

I have to say that half of you I'd never expect to be interested in such an endeavor!  (Now figure out which half!  )  It was such a pleasant surprise to get responses from -all- of you though.. haha... especially since most of you are aware of my tendencies to ramble.

I summoned all of you because I wanted to know your preferences.  We can write each as individual pairs (in other words... warmaker and I create a story, mario102 and I create a story, etc).... or we can combined efforts.  If more than two people want to work as a group, then it'd probably be easier to create a thread or write via email.

Once that detail is worked out, it will be a lot easier to start hashing out some ideas.

And honestly, I don't have a preference, so this is completely up to you!

Oh, and warmaker... by "no canons", I mean that I have no interest in using existing canons.  I don't understand writing from the perspectives of characters that already exist through some media.  I adore character development and wouldn't avoid that for the world!

Singelli :   Well, let's have a separate thread for it. A single story written by everybody, like Bob says. Posting will allow us to edit after the fact and retroactively proofread for errors.

I'd prefer if we wrote our characters as close to seeming like real people as possible. There is no real need to exaggerate to make some absolutely villainous ones to play character foil to the stalwart heroes. There are many people in stories who tend to fall into the gray area which real people typically inhabit.

In as anything else, I will be sure to follow your lead and try to mimic the style of our fellow writers.

Thank you.

Let's at least spell out what we're looking for here.  Things will develop as we go and the trail may wander off into the woods.

Let's settle on a few issues:

Everyone's basic character.  Name, physical attributes, generic emotional balance, and motivation.

Time Setting: Are we talking current day?  Are we setting up a fantasy setting a'la medieval Europe?  Is this in the future on some distant planet recently settled by humans (See Allen Steele's Coyote from decent Sci-Fi writing)?

I don't want to put out a heroes' quest or immediate objective like, "OVERTHROW THE EVIL KING RAGNAR".  Let's set the scene and see how things progress.  I'd rather uncover the story, like unearthing dinosaur skeletons, and not plot the thing like a graph.

Let's decide on situation and go from there.  Let's also limit everyone to one main character and one ancillary character to be introduced down the line at that person's desire.

Main Character:

Name: Phillip of Euleria (it's pronounced Oileria)

Physical attributes: Tall yet fairly well built. A hard worker, but one that is prone to slacking at times.

Generic emotional balance: A good man, but prone to bouts of levity. Tends to make light-hearted jokes about serious circumstances. Is very smart. However, he has hidden sorrows.

Motivation: Wants to fall in love with a good woman, no matter where she comes from. He's traveling in the hopes that he will find "the one", while looking for work in the meantime.

Ancillary character: Not sure yet, but perhaps "the one"? Will decide soon.

warmaker :   That was a great start to the story warmaker. I take it your primary character will be Erven and your secondary Anise. Good choices.

In your first segment, I should point out for proofreading that:

"custom" ought to be "customers".

"handing" ought to be "handling".

There also needs to be a space between Singelli and the colon to do a summons - like the others. We don't want our compadre starting a separate story thread, do we?

Besides that, your first story segment is an untouchable gem. Don't change a thing after that.

For my characters I will choose the other barmaid and my secondary will be her father. I will call her Justine and I may name her papa at a later time.

Uh, thanks for starting me out, I guess. haha! I'm sorry I hadn't responded. It's not that I lost interest or anything... I had a really busy two days and spent most of the day yesterday on the road, then attending meetings.  I was getting around to the questions warmaker asked, but I wanted to first gather who would write one on one and who would participate in a group effort.

supernerd, am I to assume you wish to participate in both, including the one you pm'd me about?

Honestly, warmaker, thanks for starting us off! If P3 says it's good, I trust him. I'm about to go read your submission now before I come back here to edit this post with the pertinent information.

The Edit:  I forgot to mention it above, but I tried posting from my phone yesterday and failed.  I mainly wanted to say that I agree with 'discovering' a plot as the story is written.  Over-hashing plans takes the fun from writing with others, in my opinion. I like the element of surprise that partners can bring to the table.  (Perhaps it is why I like role-playing better than writing as an individual.)

As for your choice in setting, medieval-ish eras are some of my favorite to write about.  I'm so excited!    Before I choose my character, I want to make sure I understand: Does the tavern also serve as an inn?  I got that from your writing I think, but if I'm wrong, I'd design my character(s) a little differently to better suit the current environment.

Singelli : I'd actually prefer one or the other right now (preferably the group effort). I've got a class to finish, I'm preparing to apply for a job, and need to chillax more and spend more time with family. However, I want to fill my free time with good stuff like this. I'd love to flesh out that other idea, but I don't think I'm capable of balancing both at once atm. If I focus on one at a time, it will motivate me when I get to the other, if you still want to do it.

Singelli : Yes, the location is a tavern + inn.  The ground floor is stone-walled with a large wooden door four men wide, studded with iron.  The counter area with tall stools runs along the long side of the tavern and a large stone hearth sits opposite.  There are sconces with smaller fires on the four stone posts in the main area supporting the second floor.

A spiral staircase leads to the second floor where a hallway with four rooms per side sit.  All rooms lock and have a straw-stuffed bed, ewer and pitcher of water, and chamberpots.  There are small windows that look out on the alleys and buildings only eight feet away from the walls of the tavern.

There's also a privy in the back.

warmaker :   A ewer is a pitcher for holding liquids. I hope I have cleared up the misconception before that makes it to print. If the word 'ewer' makes it into the story, this sentence is not for nothing.

So I also had a question. When do we decide to advance the story by a day? If some of our fellows are still writing about the previous day's events, it would be askance to push the story forward a day without telling everyone first. What should we do? How do we decide that?

I have retired my characters until the next day in the story dawns but there needs to be more communication so that we know which characters are doing what, when they are doing it and what day it is in the dialog that each writer is coming up with.

"52", the bygone DC title with 4 writers must have been insane to communicate about. An editor's nightmare. I still spotted weird plot mistakes after they changed editors part way through.

We have 5-6 writers having said they are committed to the project. We really need to communicate. On the bright side, there is no deadline. We will just have to adapt to each others pace.

That was a cool description! I did not know what a privy was until the ensuing Google search.

Let me clear up a misconception; I'm here for fun.

Postman3 : The noun
custom means habitual patronage, as of a store.  I didn't mean customers.

Either way, I'm out.  You folks continue writing away.  I'm not here for critique, or communication, or planning or routing a story.  I'm only here to write.  If I wanted someone to go over my stuff with a fine-tooth comb, I'd take a community education class.  I'll communicate this: This isn't fun if we sit here and grade each other and correct each other.  It's not about the words or what you think is correct or incorrect.  It's about the story.  But I don't get the feeling that's going to happen on this particular thread.

You folks enjoy yourselves.  I hope you have fun.

Singelli : Roleplaying sounds fun, I haven't been able to do it since the Minecraft RP all those many ages ago.
