Please note that college is whatever comes after high school where you live. Back in Quebec there is a special "college" (called cégep in French) that specifically come between high school and university where you get your bachelor degree. It's normally 2 years, but I switched programs and lasted 3 years.

Back in college my taste for "harder" music continued to evolve. Although The Offspring was getting less and less interesting, their music still interesting. Following my discovery of punk music, I got into Bad Religion, Pennywise and other bands I can't remember. I didn't buy their albums (except Bad Religion) but I enjoyed their music videos when they aired on TV.

Also in college I rediscovered heavy metal. I say rediscovered because Metallica has always been popular in Quebec City where I'm from (the rock station is quite popular) but I never really cared for it. Now that my ears appreciated electric guitar to its fair value I got in love with the group. "Whiskey in the Jar" is one of their best... and it took me so long before I could figure out the title! I first heard the song on a CD that often played at my college's fitness room.

That same album also featured Iron Maiden. I can't say I like the band as much as Metallica but "Run to the Hills" is an excellent. I think it's one of the first songs I've learned the lyrics from without looking at them online.

It also featured Guns and Roses. Wow, how could I miss on such good rock? Sweet Child of Mine, Paradise City, Welcome to the Jungle... I wished November Rain hadn't been so popular because it was just meh to my 9-year-old ears.

Still about "old" rock, I just couldn't get enough of Van Halen's Running with the Devil. I already liked him way back when with Jump and Panama, but Devil was so interesting.

Other good bands of my college years include Serial Joe, a Canadian rock groups that proved that teenage "boys bands" don't always sing pop music - although they eventually did. I didn't like their album when I listened to it, but had ITunes been available I would probably have bought Mistake, Deep and Look into my Eyes.

There was also Linkin Park, one of the most original bands ever. Their music was unlike anything I had heard before. Papercut is still to this day one of the best songs ever. Although the music video is... OK, the music is out-of-this-world. One Step Close, Crawling and In the End are also very good songs, that are integrated in a giant mix in the album - as if it were a single track. I preferred Hybrid Theory to Meteora as the, er, rappy guy wasn't as present - or rather his part was done better.

Speaking of Linkin Park, my father (who likes rock) introduced me to Evanescence by saying that it's "Linkin Park with a female voice." I think the comparison is fair although the band doesn't rock as much. The singer has a beautiful voice, but except for "Bring Me to Life" I can't say their music impressed me as much.

Other good rock bands included Three Doors Down, Disturbed, Papa Roach, System of a Down (although my interest for them came in later), Smash Mouth (I didn't like them in high school) and Silverchair.

Finally, before I started my first bachelor degree I did this 9-months exchange trip throughout Canada. During that time I expended my playlist with songs I NEVER thought I could learn to appreciate - mostly because of the good souvenirs. Eminem's Without Me, despite being rap, is pretty humorous and Sound of Da Police has a government-questioning theme I like. There were also tracks from Afroman.. so moving along . There was also a lot of classic rock like Bryan Adams, AC/DC (although the singer still has an annoying voice), Metallica (One, Unforgiven I) and more modern one like Billy Talent and Nickelback. There were also much heavier tracks like Dope's Die Mofo Die and Debonair (ideal when feeling angry) and Rammstein. Finally, there was more pop music that I usually can tolerate, but Christina Aguilera, Aqua and Usher all remind me of that period.

So, how did college sound for you?

janus : Let me just clarify that I have been going to College on and off for the last 7 years. Had a terrible first two years so I had make up for those, and I took a total of 2 years off. Once this semester ends I will be getting by associates degree and move onto a University once again to finally get my bachelor degree. Okay, so now that I got that out of the way I am going to base my answer off of the first two years of my College experience when I was off on my own for the first time. My playlist consisted of a lot of Eminem, System Of a Down, Gary Allan, Tim McGraw, Reel Big Fish, Young Jeezy, and Guns n Roses.

My tastes have continued to broaden, and I recently got into Irish Rock. Bands such as Flogging Molly and Gaelic Storm are my favorite, but I still like many of the other bands. I love Pandora because of the shuffle option, and because it plays a lot of different artists that I have never heard of, but really enjoy. If I wouldn't have been listening to music on Pandora I never would have discovered Flogging Molly. I have also gotten into comedy musicians like Bo Burnham and Stephen Lynch. There are couple of Bo's songs that are extremely deep and thought provoking which is awesome. Some examples of these songs would be "Art is Dead" and "From the Perspective of God.

Oh, and I can't believe I almost forgot one of my favorite discoveries. There is an a capella group called Pentatonix that are absolutely insane. Because of them, I was also introduced to a violinist by the name of Lindsey Sterling. She is also a musical genius.

Sorry if this was too much, I just love music and I have discovered a lot throughout the years I have been in College. Awesome thread!

janus : When I went to college I roomed with my best friend from HS and we continued our aural assault on humanity in a new city and with a new passion. (Which included my roomie's kick-*ss stereo with huge, loud-as-heck speakers. Also had a CD player ) His favorite bands were the Sex Pistols and The Ramones and mine were Slayer and Black Sabbath. We were quite a pair. Throw in Bob Marley for mellow times and the B-52s for fun and you have a pair of drop-outs. Twice. I do have a wider taste in music than most I must say. Maybe poor taste? Who cares right? as long as I like it.

wolf742 : wow, these are very... varied tastes. It reminds me of my brother who went from Backstreet Boys to Slipknot in like a year

And your other groups, especially the "Irish rock" ones have intrigued me; I might look for them!

janus : The best way to explore different musical genres quickly, and without downloading, is to find an online music streaming site. In case someone doesn't understand what that is, it is a site where you are able to use a search bar to find different artists, bands, as well as different genres. Once you find something you like, or want to explore you can add it to your playlist. From that "station" (so to speak) there will be similar music played based on what your choice was. There are many different sites that can be used, such as Spotify and Pandora to name a few. I personally use Pandora, and a lot (if not all) of what I described above is how Pandora works.

This is how I was able to amplify the my tastes so easily. If you end up going to one of these sites I want to suggest some music to look up since you said you were interested.

For Pandora:
1) Pentatonix - A Capella group that is ridiculously talented.
2) Reel Big Fish- Ska/Rock band with a fun, comedic, and unique sound that I instantly fell in love with on the first song I've ever heard of theirs.
3) Irish Drinking Songs- Exactly like it sounds, play a variety of different Irish music. My favorite bands that I have heard so far are Flogging Molly and Gaelic Storm.

The first two years of colleges were pretty much okay I really don't have a song to fit here

My Junior year was a nightmare for me. As I found out I had a brain tumor it would later be non cancerous. So my song was by Bob Dylan knocking on heavens door. I was burned out did not think I could go on anymore due to the pain, the illness, the tumor played havoc with  my emotions. So I felt like I was going to die and getting ready to meet Jesus.

Also during my junior year the Animals song we got to get out of this place fit me personally I had friends that betrayed me. I was burned out mostly due to above. I wanted so out of college and I wanted to get a new start. I was so disgusted I even wanted out of my town. Another song that fit this time frame was the Rolling Stone's Paint it Black cause at this time things were looking dark for me. Was told if I didn't have surgery I would die, if I had the surgery it was low but I could die on the table as I was having brain surgery

I eventually had the surgery. Also during my Junior year it was confirmed what was speculated for so many years. I had Autism. I was kind of ashamed of it. I wondered what my purpose in life was. What was I supposed to do. My senior year came and so my song here was Michael W Smith's song looking for the reason trying to find my place in this world. That song really spoke to me. I knew God had a plan for me and as a Christian I believed I had a purpose just what was that purpose. I graduated with my Bachelors and went into grad school

Grad School after my medical crisis and all the people that slandered my name. The song that came to my mind here was Toby Keith's song How do you like me now. I had just done what some people said I would never do. I went to college earned my Bachelors and now I was working on my Masters.

When I returned to college I tried to show people who I really was so my song was Hard to say I'm sorry by Chicago.  Another song was I begin reflecting on my journey so the Chicago song Old days fit well here.

As I continued to work on my masters another song was the Christian song Beautiful one that I adore. Cause I realized despite my Autism I was still a child of God's so I rededicated my life back to Christ.

The Dave Clark 5 song Catch us if you can also related to my college grad studies cause I was accomplishing what people thought would be impossible for me. I graduated and earned my Masters

I never went to college but Distillers and Give em the boot compilations were suddenly a big hit in my circle of friends, despite the fact that two years earlier you might have gotten your head kicked in for liking Rancid.

Anywho, this song always reminds me of that time.

Go motherf***er go by Nashville p**** was a popular party song too and we also loved to watch the video first if we were going to go out, especially if we were going to hassle the people in the bar we went to.
