As suggested above these are going to be questions that are asked first once you find out someone you know/meet like Doctor Who.

First a little information about my experience wit Doctor Who. I started at the revamp of Doctor Who with Christopher Eccleston (number 9) as my first doctor. Unfortunately I have not seen any of the original episodes, but I am planning on finding them at some point so I can. That being said don't let this info change your choices. I just figured it would be good to let everyone know where I currently stand when it comes to my knowledge of Doctor Who.

1) Who is your favorite Doctor? Why?
2) Who is/are your favorite Companion(s)? Why?
3) Who is your favorite Villain? Why?
4) Who annoys you the most? This can be anyone: Villain, Companion, Doctor, etc. Explain.

My answers:

1) For me my favorite doctor is the tenth Doctor, David Tennant. In my opinion he is the most clever, snarky, and entertaining of the Doctors that I have met. That being said Matt Smith is a very very close second.
2) My favorite companion is Amy Pond for three reasons. I have an extreme soft spot for gingers, she is quite comical, and the relationship with the doctor is hilarious seeing as she becomes his mother in law at some point. That made me extremely happy.
3) My favorite villain is most definitely The Silence. Wait what was I saying....
4) I absolutely cannot stand the Daleks. I know they have an enormous role in the storyline, but the suits they are in gives them the most annoying voice I have ever heard.

Hopefully this thread will catch on because I really enjoy others' perspectives of this show. Everyone seems to get something different out of it which is fascinating.

Wow, I guess there isn't as many Whovians on here as I expected. If anyone reads this that knows more about creating threads in the proper places, can you tell me if I have this thread in the correct place?

wolf742: Well, most of the Doctor Who threads are here, though I don't think this is an incorrect place for them.

1) Tom Baker.  As you might be able to tell from my avatar (it's sort of recognizable, right?).
2) I've never really liked the companions that much.  I'm really more interested in the time-travelling alien than the (usually more ordinary) people who follow him around.  Probably either Ace or Handles.
3) Maybe Omega in his first appearance, but I didn't much like the second.  Other than that, the Daleks (do they count?  They are a species, not a single villain).
4) Let's see... annoying... every 80s companion except Ace.

Mand'alor_te_Siit : See now I really want to go back and start from the very beginning so I can actually know exactly who you are talking about. I know of Tom Baker and I understand and recognize the picture under your username, but other than that I'm clueless when it comes to Doctor Who before Eccleston. As for your question about the daleks being a villain, yes they count. Most of the villains in Doctor Who are a species instead of one being. One exception of course is The Master.

Oh, and I also wanted to say that I appreciate you letting me know where the other Doctor Who threads are located.

I'm old, and watched OLD WHO. However, my wife watches NEW WHO, and I tagged along with her, so I'm versed in both. I missed a few in Smith and Eccelston, but I'm all caught up on angry eyebrows season.

1) My favorite Doctor of the Who?  #4, Tom Baker's Doctor! He's only dominated the top of popularity polls for decades, and for good reason. The scene from the City of Death storyline, with the Countess Scarlioni, is classic wit and humor.

For NEW WHO, I can sort of get on the Tennant bandwagon. I liked his smug attitude, and his darker turn towards the end of his run, a timelord with meglomania, how frightening.

2) Favorite companions. NEW WHO  - I did like Amy Pond a lot (not so much Rory, the guys tend to be lame).
I grew up with Sara Jane Smith, k9 and Leela, all bringing different sides from (you guessed it, Tom Baker's) the Doctor. I also like Jamie from the second doctor's era. It is a rare thing to see a best mate for the Doctor that isn't female. Ace (Doc 7) was pretty cool too.

Overall, I hope NEW WHO will start experimenting with more time displaced humans/robots/aliens for travel companions. Too many modern Londoners for my taste.

3) Favorite foe? Davros. The maddest scientist.  Also Meglos doctor was super creepy looking. Ugh!

4) Annoying?  OLD WHO First.  Ok, Lets go with Mel first.  Hyper annoying.  Then Peri Brown. Useless.
NEW WHO-Mickey Smith - it figures he had to mess with alternate versions of himself to get interesting.
And I'm probably going to seem really weird, but I cannot stand River Song, or Clara for that matter. I can't accept one's story and the other feels she's overstayed her welcome.

Ok, I've watched some of the new Doctor Who's but I can't really get into them. But I still love 1-7. Yes, even Sylvester has his charm.

1) People think I'm trolling when I say Peter Davidson but it's true. I grew up watching the Doctor on PBS in the States and Only really caught the end of Tom Baker's run back in the 80s. So he was MY Doctor. I also liked Colin Baker for Trial of a Timelord which I strongly recommend any true Whovian check out.

2) Favorite companion is harder, I don't think K-9 counts, so I'll go with Adric. Favorite Doctor, and he was pivotal(and died) in one of my all-time favorites "Earthshock" - which I thought was so awesome at the time partly because it conveniently explained the demise of the dinosaurs. And Cybermen are cool. Since there's so many more companions than Doctors I'm going to give the Brigadier an honorable mention just for unintended(?) comic relief.

3) Favorite villain? The Master and no doubt. Do I really need a reason?

4) I always had no patience for Tegan and rejoiced when she left.

"You know how it is; you put things off for a day and next thing you know, it's a hundred years later."

Ferdinand :
endings :
I have recently discovered that my girlfriend has obtained all of the episodes before Eccleston's Doctor. Granted some of them are only available as audio episodes due to the unfortunate events that destroyed the recordings of them before modern techno love could throw them in a cloud Storage. The point is as soon as she and I find the time we are going to watch/listen to the original episodes. This is exciting to me because from reading you guys' experiences I am really missing out.

wolf742 : That's great man I hope you enjoy them as much as I did/do. As long as you understand that special effects weren't the centerpiece of the show.  I don't know what order I'd recommend watching them in, for me, it was a lot of mix and match since I never knew what would be on when really. Cheers.

Ferdinand : It makes sense that the special effects are not great compared to now. They didn't have near the amount of technology advance we do now, and I'm sure it will be the same 50 years from now. The main thing I am looking to get out of watching the original episodes is to be able to understand all of the references that I hear, as well as have a more complete understanding of how the doctor has changed

Ferdinand :  Not just the tech, but the pace is way different in OLD WHO. NEW works with mostly one, sometimes two parters. Pretty much the formula for the older doctors were 4 parters. Now that does create quite a bit of filler. So in general, the pace is not as exciting as NEW WHO, since they have to space it over the four episodes, and for some people, its too slow.

Ferdinand : I agree. Its flash and frenzied, cuz its gotta be over in an hour.  I think the old ones could've benefited from more standalone episodes like new though, if they could have worked them in. A companion-less episode for each doctor would have been fascinating.

You have know idea how awesome it is to hear people talk about the original episodes like I talk to friends and other fellow Whovians about the newer ones. I can't wait to start from the beginning and catch up. That way I can participate in both conversations at the same level. Unfortunately my knowledge of the show is a little lopsided, but as I have previously stated I hope to fix that very soon. I enjoy being able to sit on the sidelines and read about other people's experience with the show. Whether it be about the original episodes or the new, it doesn't matter to me because I am getting different perspectives about either one.

Thanks for replying everyone, and keep it going!

Dr. Who and the Daleks is on TCM tonight. Not that anyone here will see this in time. It's totally worth watching. I remember watching it on my little 12" B/W TV on PBS so long ago. It doesn't quite fit in with the story line but it's still Dr Who(played by Peter Cushing)

That sounds awesome. There are so many shows, video games, movies, and you know the grown up stuff that my girlfriend and I are caught up in that the original episodes of Doctor Who keeps getting put on the back burner. It will happen, I am determined!

I've only seen New Who. And Netflix has only one story arc for Doctors 1-7. Would anyone know where I could watch the older episodes?
With New Who...They really need to get themselves together come next season. I REALLY didn't like this last one. Capaldi gave a great performence, he was the best part about it. But they aren't doing very much with him. They're focusing on the stronk independent companion who is brave for calling the Doctor out for being mean and hurting the special snowflake's feelings. She just kind of became a jerk to the Doc for no good reason. I really wish she'd go, or maybe they could just hire a better writer for the show.

Spoiler:
And that twist at the end of the season...
BRAVO MOFFAT

endings : Oh my gosh someone else who doesn't like Clara! I'm sorry, but her being a jerk for no reason, and acting like a special snowflake (When said character contributed absolutely nothing) got really old really fast. It was like Rose, only a ton worse. Thankfully the Doctor doesn't put up with it for long.

I wonder what the character limit on this thing is.

I've actually seen every episode of Doctor Who, both new and classic. Or, at least all the classic episodes available at the time.

So, answers:
Favorite Doctor - It's a tie between the 10th/9th/7th Doctor. 10th is just so passionate and brilliant, but 9 is funny and quirky and he's awesome, 7 is manipulative and a bit cruel, but still has a good heart, which makes him a unique Doctor.

Favorite Companion - Once again, three way tie between Donna/Rory/Ace. Ace being the 7th Doctor's companion makes him awesome, Donna was cool, sassy and strong. Way better turn from Rose/Martha who just were there to praise the Doctor and have a love story with. Rory is amazing, probably my favorite if I had to choose, since he's incredibly loyal, smart, funny and even romantic.

Favorite Villain - Oh boy, tricky question. Weeping Angels, probably. Their whole design and how they work is really cool and fascinating to think about. Either them or the cyber-men.

What Annoys Me - I'd have to say the plot points never mentioned again. A lot of things have really cool potential, yet they do nothing with it. Like the midnight entity from the episode Midnight. They could have done a bit more with it, yet they just drop it. Stuff like that.
Although I do have to say, I guess I kind of like that as well, since it leaves more to the imagination and that's always something cool to have.

[SPOILERS]
maguc: In my opinion Martha is one of the more pointless companions that just kind of filled the position until a someone better comes along. However I do not believe that Rose fits into the category. Rose really was one of the doctors love interest, and I thought it was really cool how she and the human Doctor was able to be together in a separate universe. The 10th Doctor was so well done and had such a great personality that it is extremely difficult not to like him. Donna is in my top 3 favorite companions because of her sassiness and comical witty banter that she and the Doctor had with one another. The weeping angels are definitely one of the best villains for the fact that they are so complex. I love how there is a lot of story behind each villain, so that the villain becomes more understood making the fear and/or hatred of them that much stronger. I was so enthralled by The Silence because of what they are capable of. Fascinating yet incredibly terrifying. Depending on what plot points are left to the imagination, sometimes it is better that way. It gives you the choice of what happens with said plot points.

So, I started watching Doctor Who from the beginning this last week. I've only watched the first episode with William Hartnell (well, first 4 part episode - I'm considering each story arc an episode to keep it simple in my mind when I type this) and I'm intrigued. Obviously the show is pretty basic right now. It's black and white (for a while it looks like) and the special effects are all going to be suits and make-up and stuff but so far I'm okay with that. I care more about the story than the special effects.

I like how the Doctor is still basically the same character still. He is acted a little differently but he has the same arrogance and "I'm smarter than you" attitude that the new doctors have. I'm starting episode 2 where the Daleks show up. I didn't realize they went back this far in the show. It makes sense since they seem to show up every season at least once but I figured they showed up later.

Anyway, I'm going to post my occasional reaction to the show as I watch it. There is a ton to go through so I'll be taking a while to do it but I'm looking forward to it.

geeogree : Unfortunately there are 97 episodes missing in from the 1960's, but they still exist as audio recordings and some have been reconstructed. As long has you look hard enough you can find the missing episodes so that you can have a complete story. I haven't had the chance to start from the very beginning. I'm one of those who started watching Doctor Who from the 2005 episodes, but for some reason I had never even heard of it until I started dating my girlfriend close to four years ago. I also wouldn't have known about the missing episodes if it weren't for her. I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it so far. I plan on watching from the very beginning soon because I am pretty sure my girlfriend procured the missing episodes not too long ago. I hope that you continue to enjoy watching, and I can't wait to see more periodic updates.
