This is the Mega Man X collection also known as the X collection. This collection features the games Mega Man X up to X6 and Mega Man Battle and Chase can be unlocked as well. In this review I will be reviewing the game and comparing it to the original games. So here we go.

Plot: 10
There are several plots in this game as it is a collection of the X series. So each game has its own story

  • Mega Man X- Dr. Light creates X a robot that can make his own decisions. Light fears X could turn on the world so he has him sealed to test him. Dr. Light dies before then and X is found by Dr. Cain. Cain creates reploids. Suddenly the reploids start to turn maverick and rebel against the world. The X hunters are formed with Sigma being the leader. However Sigma goes maverick and takes most of the hunters with him. X sets out along with Zero to stop Sigma's evil
  • Mega Man X2- X thought he had wiped out most of the mavericks. Suddenly Maverick activity starts up again. X  learns that the X hunters are behind this. X also learns that the X  hunters are trying to rebuild zero, who was killed in the first game. X goes out to recover Zero's parts, stop the X hunters, and whoever is controlling them
  • Mega Man X3- Dr. Doppler a reploid scientists has supposedly developed a vaccine to the Sigma Virus. Peace insures and it seems like the world is going to enter a golden age. Suddenly Mavericks start to appear and then Doppler goes maverick. X and Zero head out to search who is really behind the Maverick outbreak. Could the rumors of a virus going around be true?
  • Mega Man X4- Sometime after X3 Repliforce is built to assist the Maverick Hunters. The goal is to take the load off of the Hunters. Humans have also developed space colonies. One day a Space Colony is taken over and sent crashing down to the city wiping it out. The Hunters are called to investigate and see Repliforce is there. The  Hunters ask Repliforce if they are behind it angering them. Simga has also returned and manipulates the Repliforce. Repliforce decides they want to be on their own away from the  Hunters and people. The Hunters are forced to fight against them. X and Zero set out to see who is really behind the turmoil and to stop this civil war
  • Mega Man X5- Humans have built more space colonies as they  intend to live in space. Things are going well till Sigma returns. Sigma scatters his virus all around the Space Colony.  He also hires terrorists to hijack the space colony to crash it into earth. Sigma returns to Earth and scatters his virus. X and Zero set out and discover that every machine, and reploid is going haywire. They discover to stop the Space colony from crashing they must destroy it. One way is to blast it with a laser another way is to send a space shuttle crashing into it. Will X and Zero stop the colony from crashing and stop Sigma?
  • Mega Man X6- The Space Colony from X5 had been destroyed but the earth was badly damaged from the Sigma Virus. Zero is thought to have died. Gate a reploid scientists discovers part of a maverick that still has the virus. So Gate ends up going maverick. He creates the Zero Nightmare to manipulate mavericks into joining him. X is called to investigate to his horror he finds that several reploids have gone to investigate the areas. Gate promises the reploids if they work for him and the 8 investigators they will be spared. Gate grows more insane. X in the meantime finds Zero and discovers Zero did not die. X and Zero are sent out to destroy the nightmare and rescue reploids. They are also set out to find who is really controlling Gate.
  • Battle and Chase- Some of the classic Robot masters as well as Proto Man and Mega Man have entered a race. The goal is to get parts to increase their race cars. Mega Man and Proto Man  have also found that Dr. Wily has entered to win money to fund his world domination  schemes. Mega Man, Protoman and others build race cars and enter the race.

Okay I really liked the plot here. I liked it how Capcom did not change any of the stories in the game. As with remakes sometimes game companies change the entire plot from the original. Each game  has its original plots. I'm glad cause X2, X3 and X6 had unique plots and that is what made those games very special. As it should be no surprise I give the story a 10 out of 10

    Graphics and Controls: 8
I really liked the graphics in this game. For the  most part the graphics were left unchanged from their original games. The states are colorful, the sprites are still good and were left unchanged. The graphics is what made the X series special so I was glad that was left unchanged.

What keeps the graphics from getting a 10 is the controls. The controls can sometimes appear to be sluggish especially in the X1-X3 games. I have to wonder if that is because they were converting SNES  controls over to play station controls. Still X1-X3 controls are sluggish at times. It just felt like not only were the controls sluggish but stiff. I was disappointed when I noticed that. X1-X3 had some of the most smooth controls ever. The controls were just special in the original games. So I was shocked that they would be off. I have to wonder if it was because they were converting those games to play station controls. I give the graphics and controls a solid 8 out of 10

    Sound: 7
If the X collection suffers in anyway it is the sound. The soundtracks have been changed in this game. The one game were this is very obvious is Mega Man X3. X3 intro music got a new tune in this game. It sounds nothing like the original so I do not know why Capcom changed the sound in this game. It makes you want to say What was Capcom thinking. X3 had some of the best music in the X series and is what made that game special. So why oh why did Capcom want to change it. I do not know why we got what we got concerning X3 in this collection. The other games have pretty much the same soundtrack. Some additional sounds have been added such as enemy shots. X's buster sound has gotten a remake, and Zero's saber attacks have gotten a remake. Overall, the sounds in this game are still good. Enemies and Mavericks still have their sounds. The butchering as I call it of X3's sound  track really brings the rating down in this game. I was hoping they would have kept the original soundtrack to X3. After all, this is supposed to be a collection. So why bother to change the awesome sound track. As a result I give the sound a 7 out of 10.

    Replay Value: 9
The replay value in this game is very good. Despite the butchering of X3's soundtrack I still play this collection. In fact before I found out about Vizzed to play my favorite X games I had to play this collection. It is fun to revisit and replay the classics. You can play the very first X game or any other game. The original games had high replay value and that is what made them special. So as not surprise the collection has high replay value. What also adds to the replay value is you can unlock Battle and Chase but to do it you have to beat a certain number of games. So it makes the players go back and beat the games to unlock an additional game.

    Depth: 10
Mega Man games and Mega Man X games are known for their depth. The collection maintains that. In every game on here there are parts to find, weapons to obtain, power ups to find, and so much more. It will require you to revisit stages and investigate everything in a stage to get all the items. In fact, it will take you several revisits to a stage to get everything as certain items can only be got with special weapons. The X collection maintains the amount of depth from the original games so nothing was changed concerning the depth. If anything the collection adds more depth because to unlock the Battle and Chase game. The player has to beat a few of the classic games. I want to think it is the first three games in the series. It requires you to replay those games to get everything and to master those games. It also adds to the difficulty. So yeah, there is a lot of depth in the X collection as such I give the depth a perfect 10 out of 10.

    Difficulty: 10
The X series is known to be difficult just like any other Mega Man game. The difficulty in this collection is no different. The original games had high difficulty. Items required skills and problem solving to get them. Enemy placement is brutal in the games you can easily find yourself being shot at or surrounded. Enemy shots do a lot of damage and then there is the bosses themselves. The Mavericks for the most part can be hard a lot of them do massive damage, have attack combos, and powerful weapons. It is safe to say you will lose a few lives in the games. That is how it was in the original version so I was glad the difficulty was not toned down. I really like games that challenge you by requiring problem solving, reflexes, skills, and a little bit of luck to master. It feels like you have earned a victory when you get one.

If anything the X collection has a higher difficulty than the classics. If I could give a rating higher than a 10 I would and here is why. To unlock Battle and Chase you have to beat I want to think the first 3 games in the series. Capcom made sure you had to earn the game Battle and Chase by making it to were you had to beat 3 games to get it. That adds to the difficulty X2 and X3 are no easy games to beat. X3 is known to be a difficult game so beating it in this game makes it special. I'm just glad they did not pick X5 or X6 to beat before unlocking Battle and Chase. X5 and X6 make X3 look easy and that is saying a whole lot like there since X3 is not easy. I really like it though that they make you earn the ability to play Battle and Chase. It makes the victories seem more special. To me its like Capcom is giving you a prize for beating the games.

    Overall: 9
This was one of the first Play Station 2 games I bought. I was so thrilled to get this game. I played a lot of the X games in the 90's. I mainly bought this game for X2, X3 and X6 as those were my favorites in the X series. For those wondering why X7 and X8 were not included. It should be noted that the collection series came out before X7 and X8 were made. X7 and X8 were released In America I want to think a year or two after this game was released.  I really liked this game despite its minor flaws.

Before I talk about the positives I will talk about the negatives. The most negative thing I have about this game is Capcom messing up X3 soundtrack. The SNES version of X3 had some of the best music and sounds in the entire X series. I later found out that a play station version of X3 was made for Europe and Japan. So maybe Capcom was trying to do a hybrid of the two. Still, I hated it that they messed up X 3's soundtrack. I liked X3 and was hoping they would not have changed the sound. To some this would be no big deal what so ever. Some people like new sound tracks but if your a classic gamer like me who loved the SNES games. Then X3's soundtrack will make you upset at Capcom changing it.

The other flaw in this game is the controls. The play station games of X4-X6 have very good controls as they did in their original games. The first three games is were the controls suffer. X1-X3 seem sluggish from what they were in their SNES games. It just seems like X or Zero (X3) feel stiff. That was a major change because as I stated the first three games had some of the most smooth controls in the entire series. So why were they off in this game is puzzling. I would think they would have made the controls better (not that they could be any better from the originals) since this is a play station game. The only reason I can think of why the controls were off was because they were converting SNES controls to play station controls.

Now lets talk about the positives in this game. The X collection is a very good game. If you missed out on the SNES X games or the early Play Station games than this collection is for you. Before there was Vizzed anytime I wanted to play the classic X games I had to play them on this game. So it was nice that Capcom came out with an X collection. This  Collection was also released around the same time the Mega Man classic collection was released. I bought both of the collection series around the same time. For those that do not know Mega Man is my favorite series to play. So it is no surprise I enjoyed playing both collection series. The graphics are very good, the depth is the same and the difficulty is about right just as they were in their original games. I really liked that as I like it when game makers keep the same idea in remakes or a collection.  The collection does have its flaws, but they can be minor depending on your perspective.

Would I recommend this game? Yes I would recommend this game. If you missed out for whatever reason on owning the classic X games then you will find enjoyment out of this collection. As I stated the problems in this game can be minor depending on your perspective if you are a classic gamer or new gamer. If you grew up in the classic era of gaming like me then you can still find enjoyment out of this game. I like the classics so I was glad they did a collection series of the X games as well as the original. I was also glad they put Battle and Chase in this game. Americans had heard about Battle and Chase but I do not think it was ever released in the USA. There is a lot going on in this game which  makes it very fun. I give the X collection a solid overall rating 9 out of 10. I hope you play the collection series and get have fun doing it.

Nice job with this fantastic review. You did a great job with adding tons of detail to the review and managing to make it longer than 2000 words. The X series as a whole is probably my favorite from mega man and I think you did a great job with explaining why it's so good. Again great job and I'm looking forward to seeing your next review.

Wow. That's the first review of yours I've read and I must say I'm impressed. You gave a detailed account for every game, along with well-written reasons as to why you preferred that aspect and not that other.

But personally, I try to integrate everything together. For example, I would have put the bad X3 music in the musical aspect and maybe give it a lower score. I find this way of writing better-organized; I thought your review was done after the enumeration of your points.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
