The remake of Castlevania saga finally comes back to give a conclusion to the story of Gabriel Belmont, one of the greatest warriors of the Brotherhood of Light, which was surrounded by darkness, becoming Dracula.

OVERVIEW

Castlevania: Lords of Shadows 2 is the third installment in the remake of the classic saga of Castlevania games. Created by MercurySteam, seeks to give a conclusion to the story of Gabriel Belmont, offering similar to that of the first installment, but with new skills more suited to this new version of Gabriel gameplay. After his fight with Satan, Gabriel Belmont found a new position in this world as the prince of darkness acquiring the name of Dracula. Several years after his transformation, his own descendants tried to fight against him to put an end to evil. The first to confront him was his son Trevor Belmont, who unfortunately, was not successful. Although he was killed by Dracula, this made him the vampire known as Alucard. His second opponent was Simon Belmont, who with the help of Alucard was able to beat Dracula, leaving him asleep for hundreds of years. However, at this time, a weakened Dracula awakens only to find someone who was once called friend, Zobek, one of the Lords of Shadow, asking for help to overcome Satan once again, offering what he wants the most of in life. The end of his immortality.

At the start, you control Dracula in the past, during an attack of the Brotherhood of Light. You go through a tutorial on basic attacks and weapons that will be available during the game. Dracula has 3 basic weapons: a whip will be your main one, much like the first game; Sword vacuum (power of light) that allow you to use ice attacks and heal; and the grip of chaos, allowing you to make large explosions and destroy the defenses of our enemies.

This can result when small because after enjoying a bit of almost all the powers of Dracula, we will move forward, where you control a decrepit and weak prince of darkness in a city known only as Castlevania City .

Apart from our guns, and a very own style of Castlevania also have sub-weapons to help you on your mission. You can switch between 4 types of sub-weapons: a projectile, which depending on the active main weapon may be normal, ice or pump; bats, which will help distract enemies; fog, which will help us in exploration; and objects that serve to heal up from helping us find secrets.

GAMEPLAY - B-

The gameplay of Lords of Shadow 2, although quite varied, can be reduced to three styles of play and two environments.
These three styles of play are stealth mode, scan mode and battle mode. The first is to sneak undetected, you have some incredibly powerful enemies that you must avoid at all costs because it will result in an instant death bu you may also use other power Dracula
has to become a group of rats to explore the terrain with greater ease. The scan mode is basically move around the stage climbing walls, chains or jumping from one place to another, with a nod towards Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed. Battle Mode means getting into various fights with monsters and bosses.

The scan mode is very much based on the idea Metroidvania that began in Symphony of the night but started budding in Simon's Quest , no history is divided into chapters, but you are provided an open world that you can explore. But two problems can arise. First, all missions in the game are reduced in going from point A to point B, where before the end of the point B will have areas of stealth and travel back in time to catch another power and really, except for the existence of the secret, the story takes us on a straight line, so when you start to climb and move around the stage, you are shown the path with a group of bats.

The combat is relatively well managed, although there will be some frustration at times because the camera is very easy for enemies to stay in totally blind spots and when this is coupled with the existence of unblockable attacks (which can not be blocked by any form) , the fight may become longer and more difficult for the wrong reasons, especially with bosses and constant spamming of the aforementioned attacks.

The skill system is quite interesting, as in many action games experience points that you use to buy new attacks and improve your weapons you already have, and does not end there, as one uses certain attack, experience is gained in that attack that can be used to slowly upgrade weapons, my only complaint is that although I really tried to vary my attacks to exploit this point in the game, I often forgot about trying to make more effective attacks and as a result almost do not improve my weapons, and I felt I miss me some opportunity to take advantage of this option to the maximum.

The real problem comes with stealth areas, and the main reason is because they give to their existence: According to the story, after so much "dead" time Dracula is too weak and can not confront the demonic guards forces of Satan. Sound like a good storyline, but when this happens throughout the game, it starts to get really annoying, and is not that are particularly difficult, but as one moves in a game of how a character that little is slightly recovering his strength to defeat an old enemy one expects to feel that progress, but the game never gives that satisfaction, Dracula feels exactly the same from the beginning to the end and one will ever face one of these soldiers, which You can only mean two things: Dracula never becomes strong enough and Satan is very weak, or is this an idea that never gave conclusion, either accidentally or deliberately, and in either case is a very serious problem.

Apart from this, complete stealth at maximum strength give you the ability to become a pile of rats to go unnoticed, and there really is nothing more interesting than becoming excessively weak in 9 rats with controls do not work and with a camera that is against Player and again this is given throughout the game, that character development is seen. And to end this way there is a moment that simply must comment just because of how ridiculous it is, at some point the game will have a special part of stealth which you have to escape from a boss, it really is one of the ones I take off points because there was a rare blend of speed and accuracy, but after this chase, you fight against the boss, there is no transition to make sense, it's just goes from escaping because he is very strong and seconds later you go against the boss to kill him.

The two environments are, to call in some way, the future (Castlevania City) and last (Dracula's Castle) and can travel between them using one of the earliest amulets that get in the game. The game uses these two environments for very specific reasons: Castlevania City is the city that will serve for the return of Satan, and therefore is where the story is going, the castle can be seen as a metaphor for Dracula again to regain his abilities (various weapons, double jump, etc).

GRAPHICS - A and SOUND - A

Both areas show the most positive of the game, the atmosphere it creates, graphically  Lords of Shadows 2  is a masterpiece, and has a good soundtrack to support this environment, you can see the tragedy of a modern city in an apocalyptic time and gothic atmosphere that's the flagship of the game, a slight problem is that it is so well done, that one can get lost in the stage and therefore the developers created a few bats that tell you where to go.

STORY - A

The story is interesting in most of the route, and constantly be in a struggle against the forces of Satan and an internal struggle with memories of the Castle, and that is why we have the transition between the two environments, the only problem is the how sometimes missions are spun at a time when one is trying to get to a point, but before reaching the target is a kind of contextual parenthesis makes for a power that we did not know we needed. This really is not a problem but makes the game look a bit messy and the storyline is lost.
Something personal, it gets boring very fast, is what happens when one carries the game or is returning to a checkpoint, for some reason, developers believe it is necessary that Gabriel discuss what is happening, the problem is when there are areas where one tends to die a lot, because it always happens in this video of Gabriel repeating again and again what happens.

OVERALL - B+

In general, Lords of Shadows 2 is beautifully presented in terms of ambiance and atmosphere, unfortunately when you start to play and to be increasingly involved in the story and play, constantly encounters several elements that do not fit or feel rather incomplete, as if the limit of development had been reached and try to collect all the great plans that were in the way that best accommodated, I can not say that the game is unplayable or bad, it's just not meeting the expectation or as a Castlevania or as a sequel of the first Lords of Shadow .

This is another mighty fine review of your, Azul. However you could have talked a little more about the other aspects of the game rather than spend almost all of it on the gameplay. Mind you, that section deserves a medal as it's very thorough and interesting.

Like Janus said, that gameplay section was very well done. However, I do think that you did a very nice job with the overall review. While a good portions of it was about the gameplay, I feel like you also did a good job with the other categories as well.
