Spoiler alert! This game has spoilers that you might not want to read unless you don't mind.
Coins, coins, coins! Oh, that's all you are going to see in New Super Mario Bros. 2! First, I'll get to each individual section, and then I'll get to some other things to talk about the game, like the whole coins, coins, coins situation.
Graphics - 10/10
So, this game is on the 3DS (exclusive!), so, most likely, you are going to play this game in the 3D mode. However, if you have vision problems or are too young, maybe not so much. Graphics are nice, and it has a 2 and a half dimension form. What I mean is that the polygons on screen are not in three dimensions, but are not in two dimensions either. This is very hard to explain in my own terms, so here's a Wikipedia article to read more. Anyways, as most 3DS games, the graphics will be doubled if you look at it at the wrong angle. But, when everything is made sure to be perfect, the graphics are sweet!
Sound - 9/10
The soundtrack was composed by Kenta Nagata, a composer who's previously worked on the Mario Kart series. The music is nice, but mostly reminds me of the music from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which I might not be surprised of at all. However, the upbeat music in the overworld and darker music in, let's say the castles, are sure to set the mood for that level or stage.
Addictiveness - 8/10
Now, you start playing. You see everything that New Super Mario Bros. 2 has to offer, and you are amazed. You are glued to the 3DS for weeks, and can't stop playing. But then you stop playing. You aren't so hooked to the game. Then, after a break of maybe a week or two, you go back to playing. Eventually, you beat the game, and then just end there. There's nothing more to do, except play Coin Rush or go back to levels that you might have missed. That, my friends, is basically the scenario that takes place when you play this game. It becomes less addictive over time, which is why I gave this category an 8.
Story - 6/10
Oh, as any other Super Mario game, here comes the plot:
Mario and Luigi have to go save Princess Peach from the Koopalings and the evil Bowser! The brothers have to work together to defeat countless enemies, to save Mario's one true love. PLOT TWIST! You become very greedy and you have to pick up almost every coin you see for some reason! So, while trying to go find your true love, you end up collecting a million coins along the way (and one is supposedly $508,829.16, so I might not be saving the princess this time around) just for fun!
So, this same old recycled plot once gets used again in New Super Mario Bros. 2.
Depth - 9/10
I can tell you this - the game has a lot of levels for such a game like this. Like, maybe 90. It's pretty crazy if you ask me. Anyways, there are a few new items, however, they are based off coin collecting, which is not a surprise. It does take a while to beat, and you have to get a number of Star Coins, coins found in various (usually hidden) areas of the level, to go to a secret world called the Star World (in that world, they've got Moon Coins). So, there's a lot to do to keep you from not playing, but it might not be enough. But Coin Rush can fill in that gap.
Difficulty - 3/10
Like any Super Mario franchise game, this game is pretty easy, so everyone can play the game and pay Nintendo money to do so. Bosses aren't that hard, and enemies like the Goomba just keep getting easier. However, there is a DLC pack in the Coin Rush mode (which costs $2.50 for the single one or $7.50 for the combo pack) which have some pretty intense levels, so I might try those you are an advanced player, unlike me.
Overall - 8.8/10
So, I think that this game is great, and it is what keeps Nintendo relevant, and it is what has kept it relevant since the first Super Mario game back in 1985. What I don't understand is why the game is mainly focused on getting coins while saving the princess. I'll take this conversation over to a video game thread on here and then we can talk about it. Now, if you are a parent looking for a game for his or her child, a grandparent, a child, or just someone who might be interested in getting this game for themselves or for someone else, this is definitely the game to go for. Spoiler alert! This game has spoilers that you might not want to read unless you don't mind.
