Today I hurried into my leadership class, and when I sat down and viewed what was on the chalkboard, I really jumped in my seat.

Budget cuts.

This year budget cuts were brought up a lot for my school district since we need to do whatever we can not to be deficit spending (spending more than we earn). They're cutting/reducing way more than this if the tax levy fails, but this is all I can remember:

-ALL extracurricular activities
-ALL sports (which are extracurricular activities)
-the leadership class I'm taking (which is the class that will help you in all other classes and really help you for your future)
-ALL Kindergarten days will be cut in half
-Some preschool activities
-Some elective classes

They're issuing a tax levy for the 2nd or 3rd time this school year, and if it fails, that is what will happen to our school. Other than a few electives still being around, it'll be just core classes and nothing you can do to get involved with the school. They've also cut something already (a few months ago): all bus transportation for anyone living less than a mile away from the school. At least that makes people go to school in cars with their friends However it means some people have no choice but to walk to school!

Voting for the levy will start in May, but I'm starting to get the word out about it now. It's a hot topic on multiple news channels, thank goodness! Last time, the levy failed, which is why the school no longer has bus transportation for everyone. Since no one likes taxes and most people usually refuse to vote for bigger taxes, I doubt the levy will pass, even with all these crazy cuts.

This makes me feel very sad because extracurricular activities mean everything to so many people, and without them, school will have much less meaning, there'll be way less learning opportunities, and it'll be harder to make friends (not just for shy people like me but for everyone).

A lot of students are whining about the school being poor, and a lot of students are talking about maybe moving to a different school. Some people are even making jokes about it.

Two of my friends announced that if the levy fails and the budget cuts happen, they'll move to a different school. One of them said the only reason he goes to this school is because of the leadership class, and the drill team. Which would get cut if the levy fails. He'd never said anything about that before. I always thought he wanted to stay at our school, since he had quite a few people to talk to and he knows a lot of people, especially in the drill team.

The other one didn't tell me the reason why he'll to move to another school if the levy fails. It's probably because he wants to be at a school that he can get involved with and have tons of fun at. With all the cuts our school will be a lot less fun.

I hope there won't be a lot of people that move away from my school if the levy fails, but there probably will be. Most students want to be at a school with tons of programs that they can get involved with. I do as well. I might move to another school if the levy fails, too.

It depends on who is staying and who is leaving. If some close friends of mine are staying, (or just friends that I really enjoy hanging out with/talking to) I'll most likely stay. If some of those friends move to another school, I'll most likely follow them there. (It depends on what school it is) One of those close friends is the one who claims to have no point in staying at our school if the leadership class is gone (who I mentioned earlier in this post).

I'm really hoping and praying hard that in May, the levy will pass, and even though that'll probably make a lot of people move away too (because of increased taxes), it'll make the people that matter to me the most in school stay there.

Are they really taking away all of those activities and sports? Personally, to me it sounds awful. Since it means all of those activities. Those activities probably include some big ones that should not be gotten rid of for educational reasons.

The part that sounds awful is cutting Kindergarten days in half. There are too many things wrong with that. I mean Kindergarten is a good time. With simple learning and fun. Cutting it would just be cruel to people have not experienced the joys of Kindergarten. I think the whole school should be against all of this.

awesomeguy279 : Yep, even the big activities like the Spanish club that are educational. Every last one of them.

Yeah, but all or almost all of the cuts the school is making are necessary. If they don't, they'll continue to be in debt. The fact that the state pays the schools less every year, and making them buy more technology (we now take state exams on computers) is the reason why this is happening. So far it seems to only be happening to my school.

I'm sorry about that. It sounds like it may well be terrible! Although my brother is homeschooled, I can only imagine how he would feel if his extra activities were pulled away from him suddenly. It would put a burden on him to adapt that he might not know how to deal with. He would likely lose contact with many of his friends. He would have to learn to stay happy despite having fewer activities he would consider fun. I believe it could turn into a blessing, but it might take a while to realize and understand that. But certain things would be lost in the short term that could help him a lot...and it might hurt.

I will pray for your school and for you. I'm not sure exactly the specifics what I should ask for, but I will ask that you will be blessed for how good you are. I'm sure that as you live a good life, you'll find a lot of blessings coming your way, though they might not be what you expect.

Keep up the good work!

HOW IS THAT LEGAL? Can they actually do that? Or is it one of those things that they like need a majority vote? If it is, try to get all your friends, or you know what? Everybody at your school! Find out who the voters are. Is it residents in the area, parents of students or government officials? Then get you and the whole group to convince the voters they can't allow this to happen!

supernerd117 : Maybe there could be some benefits to everything getting cut, but it's mostly disadvantages. I appreciate your prayers and the compliments! The only specifics I can think of for you to ask for are that my leadership class stays since it's the most important program the school has. Once it gets cut, it'll never come back or it'll take a really long time to come back, like everything else that would be cut if the levy doesn't pass. That class gives people tons of motivation, hope, education about so many things (especially leadership, morals, discipline, and team-building).

I think at least half the school would be mourning for a while if that class gets cut, as well as the drill team, because it clearly means so much to a lot of the people that know about it/are in it, especially the instructors. If that class gets cut, they won't have a job... well one of them was gonna retire next year anyway but one of them was going to keep working for a few more years.

That class is the main cause of me not being very shy anymore, and it has made me want to start leading others and helping others in big ways.

I'll probably feel like I don't know what to do with myself in school if it gets cut. I'm hoping not. But losing something dear to me and not knowing what to do after it is one of the many consistent things about my personality. Thank goodness I'm a Christian so that can change.

SilverHyruler : Oh, the second I found out everything about what's getting cut, I thought, "I need to spread the word as much as possible." I might actually reach out to almost as many people as possible about this. I've already reached out to as many friends as I could, but there are way more people left (people that I know) to talk to since I found out about this an hour before school ended. Oh yeah, I should talk to teachers too, but I'm sure at least most of them would vote yes anyway.

Yup, it's legal, and they need the majority of the voters to vote "yes" for the levy for it to pass. If not, every program dear to the school except electives and core classes will be gone for no one knows how long. Everyone's high school experience (except for the seniors about to graduate this year) will change so, so much. And like I said in my first post, a lot of people will try to leave the school and move to another one.

With so much being cut, I think more people will vote for the levy to pass than last time. I still don't think it'll pass though, but I really should be positive. It's very difficult to do that in this situation.

PacmanandMariofan : Who are the voters? That's so unfair! All the people who have trouble making friends will have it even worse now!

*Sniff.*

*SNIIIIIIIIIIIIFF.*

Why no summon?!

Ha, ha, jk, sorry, I know this isn't the time! I can be serious when I have to!

Okay, that is just RIDICULOUS. If my family were there, we'd definitely side with you guys ;w;. In fact, there are ton of other people I know who don't live where you do yet still harbor enough of what people call "common sense" to vote for the levy if they did. It's just horrible!

Kindergarten days cut in half? Are they serious? Are some people seriously going to vote against the levy, knowing that something like that will happen as a result of it? I'm shocked!

Like it has already been said, make sure to convince as many people as you can. There is not much I can do in that regard as I basically live on the other side of the world xP, but I certainly can and will pray for the levy to pass! I hope things go well for you and your friends, too, with that whole issue aside. Good luck!

I probably shouldn't say this, but I have a tendency to ALWAYS look for a reason for a person or group's actions because of how ridiculous they are... I did think of the possibility of most voters being the sort who live paycheck-to-paycheck, but I'm not going to dive into that. This is a SCHOOL filled with CHILDREN we are talking about here. If I were financially unstable, I would either vote for the levy or not vote at all, but I certainly wouldn't vote AGAINST the levy.

SilverHyruler :

NintendoFanKimmy :

imamonster :

I can't respond to your posts now, but I can share this.

"High school wouldn't be fun without sports or JROTC or any other extracurricular activities! They mean everything to everyone! Were you involved in any extracurricular activities or JROTC? Where would you be now if you didn't? Can you imagine having nothing but core classes and electives to do in school???!!!

It would be difficult to sell your house and move to a different district with no one wanting to live there! With some electives being gone the other classes will be more crowded! Many teachers will lose their jobs!

With extracurricular activities being gone there'll be less opportunities to make friends, put yourself out there, and less opportunities to learn!!! That's what school is all about!

Please vote yes for the levy in May and please get the word out about it as much as possible now! Tell your friends! Tell your family! Tell everyone you can in the township! Make sure everyone knows what's at stake!!!"

Now I can respond to your posts

SilverHyruler : The voters are everyone 18 years or older that live in the township, so I can't vote.

It is unfair, but the school doesn't have a choice.

I know I have to spread this everywhere and trust me, I'll be trying to spread this in a variety of areas! I'm hoping to help my mom put up posters about it!

My art teacher is having students make letters and she's going to post them on social media! She's going to put up posters/signs as well!

NintendoFanKimmy : OH NO I DIDN'T SUMMON YOU AHHHHH WHAT DO I DO

In all seriousness, I didn't summon you because you just got done with obsessing over the negativity in this world. I thought you'd see it anyway

Yes people'll still vote against it because they don't want the extra taxes (or they can't afford them). However, I wouldn't care if I went broke trying to save the school! Also, I would help people who couldn't pay the increased tax money!

I didn't think anyone on vizzed would be able to do anything, I just wanted to share this XD

Thanks so much for praying! I've been praying hard about it.

imamonster : I've got one answer!!!! Yes it does have to do with kids XD Our school system does Preschool, then Kindergarten, then 1st grade, 2nd, 3rd, and so on until 12th grade. After 12th grade you can go to college. So Kindergarten is the 2nd year of school here, and 1st grade is actually the 3rd. I'm sure I was confused about that before XD

I appreciate the replies a lot as always!

SilverHyruler : I don't know if that's a good idea, but better yet, I probably should ask school staff members if we can go in groups of many students doing that.

Typical (sadly) of the public sector: let's cut services to the weakest elements rather than cut our own fat salaries, pensions and fringe benefits.

The same thing is happening in Quebec right now: public daycare, facing cuts, want to cut back on food to toddlers rather than cut on their gold-plated benefits (over $18 per hour at the entry level with a bachelor degree AT MOST).

Maybe you should try kickstarting your favorite activities?

janus : I wish I could, but every student has to sign up for those activities. Since I signed up for it this year, I have to wait until next year to do it (being on the Yearbook staff, for example)

Last night, there was a township meeting about the levy cuts, and if I could've went I probably would have, but I was too sick to go. Friends of mine went there though, and one of them was on the news!

The levy voting was yesterday.
The levy passed!!!  It was 61% that voted yes and 39% that voted it down. It's the first time in 5 years my school has passed a levy, and I'm really glad they did this time since it was an emergency levy! There will still be some minor budget cuts, but since the levy passed, no major ones. Most everything that most students love is staying!! We also have full bus transportation abilities again!

I'm so, so happy.

PacmanandMariofan : My prayer was answered! I knew at the time that it was the right thing to pray for. And it worked! By a pretty decent majority, I might add. I'm glad you got what you and your friends needed.
