I think I would like year around school because it would allow me to have breaks during different seasons of the year and It would be a new experience. Plus you can go through the school year knowing your next break is coming really soon rather than having to wait all year for summer. However this would make it hard to remember what you've learned so it may reduce grades then you could get grounded from your computer which means no Vizzed. So its a tough choice what do you think?

gokulikescheese : Since we have air conditioning and no one works the fields as much as they used to in the United States, I think having a format like this would work very well.

3 weeks of Monday through Friday school every month.  One week completely off every month.

That's a great way for kids to stay engaged in school, continue learning, but get breaks and weeks for rest throughout the year.  The real world doesn't operate the way school does and I see college kids get real jobs and totally fizz out because they are expecting to take the summer off.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way.  You still have to contribute.

The only negative would be changing how parents do their vacations and their child watch for the weeks the kids are off.  Maybe the whole United States takes over and some schools get certain weeks off, other schools get other weeks off, and people can keep working while making sure their kids are safe.

I definitely say regular school because I always remember once the school year was over, I would be so excited to have a 3 month vacation without having to do any work. I liked school a lot, but at the same time I loved getting that long break at the end of the school year. Now that I'm an adult though, I don't get that kind of vacation time anymore.

I would have to say regular school. I think it would really discourage a lot of students if you had school all year round. It would be very hard to remember certain things you learned and without school break I think students wouldn't be studying and performing at their maximum potential. I know I certainly wouldn't be. The 3 month vacation always gives everyone a boost for the next term or school year.

To answer in a libertarian manner: let the markets (i.e. all the people) decide.

By that I mean let people whether they prefer the present model of 9 months of school and 3 months of vacation, if they want a shorter or longer period of schooling or if they prefer having it year-round with breaks in-between.

Letting people decide by themselves how schooling is done is the best way to find out what is the best way (if there is one). The present centralized model keeps people from experimenting.

Well, I like regular school, but I can see the problems it could have. Like, during the summer, kids tend to forget what they learned. That's why I think my parents had me go to summer school, just so that my brain doesn't forget everything I learned. I can see how year long school would eliminate that, but I also like taking long breaks. Each side has advantages and disadvantages. It's what you want.

For me, I'm happy with regular school.

As someone who went year round while in college...I say  year round. It does make things a bit easier if you live in a place where at least one season makes roads impassible a good portion of the time (winter, here), because you have a break during that time and it doesn't make you miss as much school. Therefore you're not as behind, therefore time doesn't get crunched and stress levels don't go through the roof as often while teachers try to cram everything they have to teach you into shorter and shorter periods.

Plus, as a student, I can safely say that 3 months off made me forget so much of what I'd learned the previous year, since I wasn't applying the new knowledge long enough to get it stuck permanently in my head. So the first few weeks of a new year were always wasted as teachers refreshed all their students on the previous year's material. With year round school, you don't have that, so you ultimately learn more

Also, with year-round, the mini-breaks you get throughout the entire year help you from being burnt out. I dunno about anyone else, but come the middle of January, I was always ready to throw in the towel on the school year. With mini-breaks, that doesn't happen as often. (From first-hand experience, thank you.) You get a chance to recharge a bit before going at it again, and it helps.

I think it's better to have a regular school schedule rather than having an all-year schedule for multiple reasons.

1.. you can't really tell on when your year ends and when it begins.
2.. a lot of kids wanted to attend a lot of festivals during the Summer, and with school going on at that time, they will end up missing most, if not, all of the events because they have to be in school.
3.. it's mostly with transportation issues, although it won't be much of an issue for buses, but for parents taking their kids back and fourths to school and teens driving back and fourths to school can take a toll into their gas budget.

That's my put onto the whole all-year vs. regular schedule.

I rather have my education where I get a month break after dealing with a full semester of school. If there are multiple breaks in between school sessions, it messes up my sleeping schedule and work in progress. Work comes first then breaks. So much better than having multiple disruptions during school sessions or vacations.

ghostfishy : Then why not keep the regular week day beat Seriously, unless the previous day was extremely tiring, why wake up at 10 every morning? I admit that my biological clock ticks too loud for me to sleep past 7:30 (when I'm lucky), but I have had too many problems getting back to sleep on Sundays that I now wake up during weekends so I can sleep at least 7 hours.

Keeping the routine can help you study in the early morning when everything is calm around you. I remember studying late at night after my mom left for work. It was so quiet that I found it easier to focus, with so little distractions around.

I rather have a consisted sleeping schedule and routine for me to have than a dysfunctional one. Bodies in general love predictability. I hate having to have something disrupt me in any general sense.

If sleep is an issue, then students should just keep their same sleep/wake schedule during break.

I love the idea of year round school.  Admittedly, I would have personally hated it while a student, but it does make much more sense.  The amount of retention over the summer is abysmal.  I remember each and every year going over the same topics again and again and thinking "Didn't we already do this?"  My classmates more often than not had completely forgotten the topic.  While this made school extremely easy for me (my memory is impeccable), it also made it boring.  Had we used a year-round model, there would be much less time wasted repeating things.

As for whether it would disrupt the normal "summer" activities- most year-round programs I have seen have a three week summer break.  That's plenty of time for family vacations or participating in other summer activities.

The one place where I can see it not working is with summer jobs.  The summer job is a mainstay of teaching responsibility and money management.  You can't really do that with a year-round model.
