Before we begin this review audience, allow me to ask you a question. How would you kill a dragon? Well, more specifically a Wyvern.

And more precisely,this one.

That is the Nargacuga, from the Monster Hunter franchise. It's going to be your job to kill it,but you can only use an element from the Pokemon games. So i once again ask the question, how are you going to kill it?

Are you going to go with fire and burn it to ashes,Roy Mustang style?

Perhaps choose water, and shoot a concentrated blast so fast that it breaks off a limb?

Maybe even pick Psychic,so you can break its bones?

Or maybe pick fighting and..Um..Punch it alot.

If you don't get the joke, the point i'm trying to make is that realistically, fighting types in the Pokemon universe should be extinct.Just think about it.

You're up against Mewtwo, what are you going to do,run up and punch it,or use something like Shadow Ball from a range?

They just don't make alot of sense to me.Another type i see in the Pokemon games that would be extremely flawed, are bug types. And they are not just flawed from a realistic standpoint, but in a competitive one as well. The only thing that bug types have from a competitive standpoint,is Scizor. And Volcarona which was heavily used for a few months in gen 5 before slowly going away, due to its heavy weakness to Stealth Rock.(And i really, really want to review this guy.)

Now,what happens when you take some of the oddest types of Pokemon in the Pokemon universe, and mash them together?

Well,you get this guy.

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to Pokemon Reviews, and this week we will be looking at Heracross.Lets get started.

Leveling And Leveling Experiences.
............................................................................................................................................................................................
Disclaimer: This review was done by creating a new save in Pokemon Omega Ruby, using a level 5 Heracross as my starter.
Ugh,how to begin.Well, leveling a Heracross is rather easy, just a bit confusing. You see,a level one Heracross can have any 4 of these moves.

Arm Thrust
Bullet Seed
Night Slash
Tackle
Leer
Horn Attack
Endure

So,lets just go over a quick review for all of them.
Arm thrust is a weak fighting type move, that deals 15 damage, but hits 2-5 times. It is rather effective against normal types early in the game, but quickly loses its touch by level 12-15.Even if the target is super effected by it.

Bullet seed is pretty much the same, but still remains a bit more effective against water types.

Night slash is excellent.Dealing a heavy 70 damage, and has a high critical hit ratio.Pray to whatever you believe in,that you get this move.As you can easily over power anything for a few levels.

Tackle is..Decent i suppose. But not really anything special.Basic attack move that all Pokemon get at one point. In fact,i believe literally every Pokemon can learn it...

Leer does nothing effective. It just lowers defense by 1 stage.Which is not efficient.Instead of wasting times lowering the defense, you can just one hit K.O most Pokemon at this point.Due to that extremely powerful attack stat.

Horn Attack is very powerful, and just one step below Night Slash in terms of damage.Well, technically 5,as this deals 65 damage.Moving on.

Endure allows you to survive a hit that would normally be fatal.Which..Is not to bad of a concept. But due to Heracross's speed, its not worth it.As chances are that you will be able to out run most Pokemon you encounter.

At level 7 you will learn feint.A move that deals 30 damage, and has +2 priority.Problem is that it will only deal damage,if the target is using is protect,or detect. And in all honest, this move will only be effective if you're a Psychic.Yes,it can be effective some times. But unless you have an extremely high level of prediction, its just not worth it.

Level 10 offers you Aerial Ace,a flying type move that deals 60 damage, and is uneffected by any changes to accuracy. This is actually rather powerful for leveling. You can take out fighting types easily using this move.

Level 16 gives you Chip Away.A normal type move that deals 70 damage, and ignores defense and evasion stats. This is actually powerful. And i recommend you keep it.Show those cascoons and metapods not to waste your time!

For Level 19,you will get Counter.A move that deals double the damage, the target dealt to you.For peoples who don't want to think to much, let me simplify it for you.

Gallade uses Brick Break,
Lucario loses 150 HP.
Lucario uses Counter.
Gallade loses 300 HP.

Easy math. This move is actually very, very interesting. However,it relies on the target being faster than you.Something that does not happen often. However,if you do encounter something faster than you,its not bad at all.In fact, its great.I recommend this one.Its sort of like a nice little trump card.

At level 25 you get Fury Attack. It sucks,Moving on.

Anyhow-..Okay fine. It's a normal type move that deals 15 damage. It can hit 2-5 times, and has 85% accuracy. This move is literally pointless if you have,or had arm thrust. It beats it in every single way.Well, unless the target is a Psychic or Flying type.By the way,why are you still fighting with Heracross,if you're facing a Psychic or Bird type?!

At level 28 you get the first move that is extremely helpful.Brick Break. This baby can destroy normal types. And deals decent damage without it being super effective on a target. Please use it,please

Next up at level 31 is Pin Missle.Don't take it.It's bad.Its a slightly stronger bug type Fury Attack, with a bit more accuracy. You will be getting a much better Bug Type move by the end of this.

Level 34 gives a take down.A poweful normal type move, that deals 90 damage and has 85% accuracy. In exchange for a bit of recoil damage of course. You will take 25% of the damage the target took.Which in my opinion,is a pretty fair trade.

And finally at level 37,we get Megahorn.A very powerful 120 damage bug type move, that has 85% accuraccy. This is arguably the best move Heracross can gain by leveling. You would have to be pretty dull in the head to not take this move.

Level 43 brings us the second most powerful move in Heracross's leveling set (In my opinion at least) Close combat. This baby deals 120 damage, and has 100% accuraccy. However, your defense and special defense will drop by one stage afterwards. This is a very powerful fighting type move, and a must have when leveling.

Finally we get Reversal at level 46.Which is rather underwhelming to be honest, but regardless.Reversal's power increases,as your health decreases. To make it a bit simpler, here are the mathmatics involved.

71% - 100%----- 20-Damage
36% - 70%------ 40-Damage
21% - 35%------80-Damage
11% - 20%------100-Damage
5% - 10%-------150-Damage
0% - 4%--------200-Damage

This can be very powerful when used correctly. And to be honest,i don't think i have to much of an opinion on this move.It can be a powerful trump card, but i don't think i can recommend,or not recommend it.I'm sitting on the fence for this one.

Stats Weaknesses And Abilities
............................................................................................................................................................................................
HP: 80
Attack: 125
Defense: 75
Sp. Atk: 40
Sp. Def: 95
Speed: 85

Heracross comes with rather impressive stats.Perfect for a speedy little glass cannon.

It's health is decent, and features a good bit of girth.

Its's Attack is insane. And can one hit K.O alot of enemies if you're dealing super effective damage.

It's Defense is rather..Lackluster.And you will most likely be taken down in one hit by a flying type move.

The Special Attack stat is mediocre. And for good reason. It has little to no special attack moves. And even if it did,it would still suck because of this stat.

The Special Defense is actually pretty high. You will be able to survive one or two special attacks because of this.
And finally the speed is very reasonable for a glass cannon. You can out run most threats in game, online though..You may have bit of trouble.

As for weaknesses,well..This is another area where Heracross begins to faulter.Heracross has 4 weaknesses. Two of them are commonly found in game (Flying and Fairy),and the other can easily be encountered online.(Fire and Psychic.)

You will no doubt have a tough time. However, you have a variety of counters to choose from.

An Excadrill will take care of your flying type problems in a jiffy.A simple water type will easily take down any fire type. However,be warned. In online play a fire type Pokemon will most likely have a contingency plan for take down a water,or electric type.Trust me,i know for experience...

Psychic types can easily be countered by a Dark type, such as Tyranitar.Or another Psychic type to catch them off guard.Such as Metagross, who also takes less damage from Psychic type attacks.

And for fairy types,a Gengar or Gliscor will easily get rid of them.

For abilities you 3 options.

Swarm: When a Pokémon with Swarm uses a Bug-type move, the power will increase by 1.5× if the user has less than or equal to ? of its maximum HP remaining.

Guts: Guts raises the Attack stat by 50% while affected by the burn, paralysis, poison, or sleep status conditions. The Attack drop from burn does not occur.

Moxie:When a Pokémon with Moxie causes another Pokémon (including allies) to faint through direct damage, its Attack rises by one stage. Moxie will not be activated by indirect damage, such as through Sandstorm or an item like Rocky Helmet. Moxie will not activate if an allied Pokémon defeats a foe in a Double or Triple Battle.

The most common choices in competitive play are Guts and Moxie. As for what i recommend, well,i think it depends on what you're expecting.Do you think you want your Heracross to stay in the fight for an extended period of time? (Guts)
Or do you want your Heracross to act as sort of a suicide bomber, that takes out a good amount of Pokemon, while also aware that its end is drawing near? (Moxie)

It's all up to you.

Competitive Play
...............................................................................................................................................................................
Due to the recent Mega evolution that Heracross has got,he has been making somewhat of a comeback in competitive play.As his play rate is just on par with Lucario's,and Scizor's.The major set being run right now is-

1-Close Combat
2-Megahorn
3-Facade
4-Sword Dance

Item:Toxic Orb
Ability: Guts
Nature: Jolly

Evs
252-Atk
4-Def
252-Spe

This set focuses on hitting hard, and hitting fast, and ultimately sacrificing yourself in the end,to get some effective faints on your opponents Pokemon.

Close Combat is considered to be Heracross's best STAB move.It deals a ton of damage, while giving you a decent price. The logic pretty much works like this: Why would i care about my defense and special defense? I'm going to die anyway!

Megahorn can take out a decent range of types, and does not miss often. And it also counts as a stab move.Which means it is almost assured that you will kill a Pokemon that is super effected by this.

Facade is there to resonate with Toxic Orb,and guts.Making a very cheap, but very powerful tactic.

Sword dance is here for when you suspect an opponent may switch out.Only use it when you're sure you will not be hit.Using this at the wrong time can most likely end your chances of taking a few Pokemon with you.It takes a while to learn when to use it.And it's going to be a gamble each time.So be prepared to take the risk.

Toxic Orb,as a stated before, easily resonates with Facade, and Guts. You will hit like a truck. And like i said, don't care about the damage it deals to you. You're going out anyway.

Guts is essential to this set.It helps you hit harder..That's pretty much it.I thought i explained this about two times now....
The EV point spent in Attack are there to maximize your damage. Its there to make sure that once you hit something,it has a very, very low chance of getting back up.

The 4 measily points spent in defense are there to help you against your greatest threat, flying type moves. As most flying type moves are physical. And since you have a very low defense stat, you're extremely vunerable. These 4 points, believe it or not, will most likely let you take at least one hit from a powerful flying type move.

Lastly, the 252 points spent in speed are there to help you hit fast.I don't care how powerful you are,you are fragile. If you can't hit fast, you're dead.

Almost forgot, the jolly nature is there to maximize our speed. As i believe we have enough attack already. It wont mean a thing if we can't hit the target.

Final Thoughts
................................................................................................................................................................................
Heracross is a fan favorite of mine.I used to use it all the time in Black and white, and a bit in X and Y.And in all honesty...Age does not seem to have treated him to well.

While Heracross is powerful,it is extremely vunerable to many types of Pokemon.Has an extremely lacking movepool until the last 3 moves. And is a bit of a pain to level.

However, that is not to say that Heracross is bad,at all.It hits like a truck, and is extremely fast.Perfect glass cannon Pokemon. But its just to fragile. It's basically just a slightly better version of Weavile.

To be honest,i would rather stick with a conkeldurr. At least i know it can take a few punches, and it has some methods of staying in the fight a bit longer.(A.K.A Drain Punch)

The problem with Heracross is not that it has a rather low defense stat, its that it has so many weaknesses. And do to it's Tm and Hm range, its nearly impossible to have a contingency move for them.

All in all,Heracross does have alot of speed and power. But is limited by its unfortunate typing, and Movepool.
Heracross gets a final score of-3.9/5

And just barely misses a 4.0,Due to it only having one major chink in its armor.Poor little guy is weak to everything.
Pros
.................
.Very Powerful, and Very Fast.Extremely good glass cannon.
.Effective and efficient stats.
.Wonderful abilities.
.Pretty good in competitive play.
.Despite what i have said,Megahorn can counter Psychic types effectively. However, that's just 1/4th of all the weaknesses you have. And that's not even the worst thing you have to worry about.

Cons
..................
.Terrible typing. It is very hard to give it a move that can counter your weaknesses.
.Limited movepool.
.If there is one thing Weavile can do better than Heracross,it's countering flying types.Heracross has little to no way to defend against its biggest threat, without switching out.

For alternate Pokemon recommendations,i would like to point you towards-

1.Conkelldur: If you want to stay in the fray a bit more, you will be happy to know that this Pokemon hits like a truck, but unfortunately moves at the speed of a snail...

2.Scizor: I don't want to say it,but..Scizor does everything Heracross does,but better.

3.Garchomp: I like to think of Garchomp as a Dragon type version of Heracross,at least in terms of stats. There both extremely powerful, and both of them have one extremely large chink in the armor.

Well, that's pretty much it for me.Thank you for taking the time to read this long wall of text.If you have any recommendations or suggestions of Pokemon i could review, just tell via comment,or private message.
............................................................................................................................................................................................
Now if you excuse me,i'll be hunting this rare Nargacuga.See yah next time.*Waves*

.If there is one thing Weavile can do better than Heracross,it's countering flying types.Heracross has little to no way to defend against its biggest threat, without switching out.

Nice review as always. I like Heracross, it is my 3rd favorite bug type pokemon behind Volcarona and Scizor. I like him for his stat distribution, his unique typing and the potential moves he can learn. I have a Heracross that I bred and trained myself, it is a jolly nature with 252 Evs in that monstrous attack stat, 252 in speed, and 4 in defense. The main reason why I invested in its average speed id because it loses a significant 10 points in speed once it mega evolves, and by investing in it, I can out speed some of its major threats better. I throw the last bit into defense, even though it receives a nice 115 base defense after mega evolving.

Overall, your recommended move set and stat distribution correspond with my Heracross so perfectly, it's actually quite scary XD. Even though his mega isn't the best out there, I still like using him because base 185 attack is nothing to laugh at, and with 75 base speed, a counter is guaranteed to land some pretty heavy damage if used correctly.

As always keep up the great work man, I look forward to reading your next review!

This is a fantastic review for Heracross. That's my favorite bug pokemon in the series, though Scizor has a better type combination. I agree with you that it's weaknesses can be a pain especially flying, but at the same time it has a great variety of moves it can learn and it's got really good stats. Excellent job with this review, I hope you'll continue to do this kind of reviewing in the future.
