Welcome to the GOLDEN ERA of Sonic The Hedgehog. The 90s are known as the best years for Sonic Games, but what if I told you that wasn't entirely true? Here is what I call the first "Dark Age of Sonic.", between 1995 and 1998, many bad Sonic Games came out, with a drought of good games, after Sonic & Knuckles. These games include but aren't limited to... Sonic Labyrinth, Sonic R, and this game, Sonic 3D Blast. But is this game really that bad? We shall find out today! Let's go back to 1996 and try out Sonic 3D Blast or as it's known in Europe. Sonic 3D Flickies' Island. Graphics: The graphics are pretty good by SEGA Genesis standards. With some cutscenes that are basically just... pictures, with a bit of text underneath. Honestly though..I found nothing that bad. The game is in an isometric standpoint with.... Basic Sprites. Honestly, I don't mind the graphics of this game at all, therefore I'll give it a 6/10 Sound: Unlike the rest of the game, the sound is pretty dang good. Not as epic as The Sega Saturn Version released AFTER this one. But the sound is pretty much spot on, as expected from a Sonic Game, with my favorite track being the Second Boss Theme (There's two, that basically alternate). Though the final fight theme is...not so good. It's too subtle and doesn't really resemble music. I can see what they were going for but honestly, the fight already fell flat without the lack of a true final fight track. Therefore on sound I give this game an 8/10. Addictiveness: This is where things go down hill...The game's not addictive, in fact there's little chance I'll want to go back and finish the game again. It just comes off a bit annoying, like most of my reviews I use the Difficulty Section to describe Gameplay, so I won't plague the review with a long as long can be Addictiveness Section. Story: The story... I should rate this higher, but for once in a Sonic Game, it's pissed me off. Here's how it goes. Dr. Robotnik finds Flickies' Island and apparently finds out that The Flickies are a great power source for robots, he then kidnaps and traps them. Nothing new right? (Though I wish they explored the concept of Flickies' Island again) Well here's the thing... I'd be fine with it if I didn't get through with all 7 Chaos Emeralds. To find a mediocre Final Fight, and a EXTREMELY mediocre ending, to which the WRITING made me cringe. "No one messes with my friends, see ya!" That's basically all Sonic says, before the game tells you Flickie Island is at peace, blah blah blah, honestly I think they should have scrapped the text based scenes, like previous sonic games but...NOPE! Either way, not too good, not too bad either, but the ending grinded my gears enough to rate the story a 3/10. Depth: Depth... A lot of people who haven't reviewed or haven't read the requirements for depth when reviewing, will rage about my rating for this, because it's a Sonic Game but...it's nothing personal. The game just has no depth, you go find five random enemies (That's right, most stage hazards aren't even enemies), beat them take the Flickies, keep them safe, and get Chaos Emeralds. Chaos Emeralds are a side thing you can get for The Final Fight but... Honestly that's it, not much depth. 4/10. Nothing personal, just not much depth. Difficulty: Here we go, this rating may be high but it's not entirely a good thing. Let me explain, the game is originally meant to be played as an isometric game on a D-Pad...that is not only uncomfortable to play, but seemingly impossible, luckily emulators let us use analog sticks but... The game still seems...slippery. You spend a lot of time just trying to find the few enemies in the stage, to then defeat and get Flickies' from, the sad thing is that most of the time, you don't find any enemies, most stage hazards are just....random stage hazards. But of course now that you have flickies following you, if you get hit, they scatter, and any place you get hit, is the WORST PLACE to pick them up, especially when they decide they love jumping around in a pit of LAVA! But the absolute worst part is depth perspective. It's bad. It's terrible. UCK! The boss battles are a mess because I can never tell if Robotnik is low enough to hit, about 9 times out of 10! The special stages on the other hand...They're easy, oh well. But with all of this said, The difficulty gets my rating of...7/10. Overall: All things considered, how much did I enjoy the game? How would I rate it after all of this?... This took me a moment, the game's not terrible but it's kinda bad, it's worth trying to see if you like it at least, so I guess I would give this a rating of... 5/10.
