Blood Omen is another one of those games that I've never played before. In fact I never knew about it until I looked up its sequel, Soul Reaver, some time ago. Some time passed and I discovered it on this very site, and soon after that I delved right into Blood Omen
Story
Blood Omen follows three story clichés that I have seen in video games. It is revenge story, as you are taking revenge of those that wronged you and their masters. However, simultaneously it also a save the world story as they ones you're getting your revenge on are also responsible for the world's dire state. It also has a mysterious benefactor that you know is going to be a bad guy, but I at least Kain says he doesn't trust him. However, through its dialog Blood Omen can seen as a somewhat intriguing tale of manipulation, sorrow, and madness.
Graphics
In terms of graphics I thought Blood Omen was akin to the original Diablo. Sprites are very detailed, even the characters are rather detailed, which is surprising as they usually get the least detail. Character sprites are also well animated, though I wished they worked harder on animating the gore and a couple of the projectiles. I also hate how dark it gets in this game, which is very annoying when you're in a place teeming with danger and you can barely see it. The game also has FMV cutscenes, which aren't actually not half bad for its time. Though they do make Kain kinda weird looking to be honest.
Sound
The music in this game, while very well done, gets repetitive as they are many tracks to listen. The sound effects are also very well done and clear. However, the best sound in the game would have to be the voice acting. A big round of applause to Simon Templeman and Tony Jay for an incredible performance.
Gameplay
Blood Omen plays like an old hack n' slash in which you run around killing enemies with your large arsenal consisting of weapons, armor, items, and spells. Throughout the game you collect different weapons and armor that have different effects with some having a pro and con. For example: the flame sword lets you burn enemies, but prevents from drinking their blood, and the blood armor will drain the blood of enemies even blood that is deadly to Kain. There are a variety of items that you can also use to decimate your items in a gruesome fashion, such as tearing off all of their skin. Of course, there are curatives for restoring health, curing poison, and restoring magic (which is really dumb as it is temporary and empties your magic afterwards). Honestly though, you won't have to use the items when you get some of the best spells. Spells come in a variety of ways with only a few being truly needed to survive and solve puzzles (which all consist of pushing buttons) of the dungeons that you explore. In fact, there are two spells that lower the game's difficulty by a lot. The shield makes you immune to physical attacks and repels magical attacks, and blood shower can simultaneously kill surrounding enemies and heal you. King may also take different forms, though only three will be truly useful to you. One lets you fast travel, one lets you jump over obstacles and on to low cliffs, and one that lets you walk on water (which burns vampires). Also being a vampire Kain can drain blood from his enemies, though only when they're stunned or through spells. But beware of the color of your enemy's blood, as not all blood will restore you. Now in terms of difficulty Blood Omen isn't very hard if you choose the right arsenal for the right moment. Even the bosses aren't very hard, though that's mostly due to the fact you have a spell that makes you invincible. However, the boss fights are somewhat unique from the typical hack n' slash fair; one that's really annoying turns land into water. However, the most difficult thing that you will ever experience in this game are the painful load times when you entered menus, and you enter menus a lot in this game.
Blood Omen was a nice adventure for me. It had an intriguing storyline, great voice acting, and well rounded gameplay that was just a little rough on the edges. Kain is becoming one of my favorite vampires in video games, which there aren't many to begin with. |
