Here is a review by The IB, This game is on Tony Hawk Underground for the PlayStation 2, this is the 5th installment of the Tony Hawk series (I think it would be called “Pro Skater 5” but I think Activision / Neversoft wanted to go with a different approach with the series and start a new sub-series within the Tony Hawk series known as the “Underground / Wasteland” series by adding a new trilogy featuring Underground 1, Underground 2, and American Wasteland (which I think would be “Underground 3”, but that might just be my opinion). Well, nothing really much else to say in the intro, let’s just move on with the review.

Graphics..

The graphics in this game, although this is only the 3rd Tony Hawk game released for the PlayStation 2 (4th for the Xbox), I think it is a huge upgrade from THPS 4, I think the graphics makes the place a little more realistic than the Pro Skater series, sure, it’s only been a year since their last game (Pro Skater 4), but they have made a huge improvement with the graphics though. You figure, this being the first game in the new Underground / Wasteland trilogy, and after seeing the past 4 games, especially the 3 Pro Skater 2 levels in this game and see on how much the game has improve really surprised me. But I do have a few flaws with some of these graphics as well, mostly some on the animations in the game especially with the vehicles, they seem that they do turn too sharply and that does mess everything up when it comes to on the animation with fast-moving items like cars and what not, but other than that negativity I have about this game’s graphics, I still think the rest of it like the setting and the environment is still pretty decent for the PlayStation 2, that is mostly all I have to say with the graphics, it’s really great and but a few flaws kept it from being perfect.

With all that said, I do have to give this game a 9 out of 10, the reason for a 9 is mostly what I explained above with the animation seems a little too quick and sharp like it’s got low frame per seconds, but as for other part of it, it is still amazing though and this is what makes me to give this game a “9”, great, but not perfect.

Sound/Music..

For the sound effects, it gives a lot more realistic effects with the skateboarding, like the skating on the ground you’re rolling on (like the road, wood, dirt/grass, steel, etc.), the grinds, the flips, the wipeouts, the vehicles, and a bunch of other things and if you manage to turn the music off, you also get the background music as well such as the suburban sounds of New Jersey, the busy streets of New York, the crowd at Slam City Jam, and a bunch of other noises as well. The voices also played out also makes it clear on what you’re doing as well, you have a clue on what’s need to be done, despite that there is also a text box with a more accurate message on what to do.

The music has like a huge list of Rock, Punk, and Hip Hop songs, this is also one of the 3 games that where I did happen to get some of the music I listen to. There are a total of 72 different songs from 70 different bands (3 songs are from the same band “KISS” ) in the game which is a whole lot more than any other previous Tony Hawk titles, and unlike past titles, you can select or deselect a certain genre you want and don’t want to play, but it being 3 different genres, I don’t think it matters on the genre, I still like all songs in the game. Mostly skaters listen to these 3 genres all the time, so I don’t think that anyone will deselect any of these songs, but I could be wrong though.

For the Sound Effects and the Music, I will give it a perfect 10 out of 10; it’s got a lot of upgraded sound effects with each of the 12 levels and the 3 THPS levels seen a quiet a bit of improvements than when the levels was on the PlayStation 1, and the music has improved it’s playlist as well with 72 different songs.

---------------

Addiction Level..

For the addiction level, well, this is my 2nd most favorite Tony Hawk game in the whole series, so it is addicting to me a whole lot, I think with 12 huge levels and 3 of those levels are from Pro Skater 2 which is in fact my most favorite game in the whole series, that in a way bumps this game up to number 2 on my list of most favorite Tony Hawk game. I have spent quite a little bit of time in this game whenever I’m really not playing much of anything, and if I do feel like playing a skateboarding game and I want to play something other than Pro Skater 2, I will pop this game into the PlayStation 2 and start playing this game. Now since my PS2 is broke and the PlayStation Store doesn’t sell Tony Hawk games (other than THPS HD), this has put in a huge hole in my enjoyment because I won’t be able to play Pro Skater 2 and Underground 1. But whenever I can be able to play this game once again, I will as soon as possible, this tells you on how addicted I am with this game, it’s got a lot of neat things to explore in within these 12 levels and all the customize things (which I will mention below in the Depths), this game can make you play this game for a little while, hope that your PlayStation 2 doesn’t die out on you, like me.

For the Addiction Level, I give this a perfect 10 out of 10, this game is highly addicting, I think with the 12 locations to explore in, plus creating your own park, and other creating things makes for a really addicting game which people can be stuck onto this game, sure, this game isn’t really that well-known to the public and people doesn’t really care too much about this game, except for me, I think this game is only of the best games Activision has come up with other than that overrated Call of Duty games (which more deserves a 5/10 rather than a 10/10 but this isn’t about this game).

---------------

The Storyline..

For the first time in the Tony Hawk series, you have a Storyline. How the storyline happens to go, both you and another local skater you know named Eric Sparrow both from New Jersey, all realize that a pro skater named Chad Muska decided to show up in their backyard for a little skate demo, and you wanted to show Chad that you want to make a name of yourself, and Chad is quite impressed on your moves and tricks that he wanted you to get a sponsorship from a local skateshop to get your named heard, and to be able to get heard more, you need to show Stacy a video of some skateboarding somewhere outside the area, and when you realize that you’re about to get your name out, your skate friend has got kidnapped by the local drug dealers and you put a stop to it and then you both escape to New Your City (Manhattan), and once you realize that when you arrived, there is a whole lot of interesting things to show Stacy, after showing him that you got guts, he ask you to join the Amateur skating competition held in Tampa, FL, so you borrowed his vehicle down to them until once you arrived, you end up getting in trouble with the Tampa Police Department, and to avoid both you and Eric arrested by the cops, you do them a few favors, and then you’re free, and once you’re free, you can be able to compete, but one problem, the competition is full and you need some support from Tony Hawk himself and after you got support from him, you get in anyways. After you win, you get a choice of what team you want to represent, and after joining that team, you meet Todd who’s the Manager who later tells you about a Pro competition later on in Vancouver and you have to make an epic video to represent his company and you end up doing a huge gap in Hawaii, but was stolen and edited by your so-called “friend” Eric, and ended up you competing in the amateur competition (again), but you want to compete in pro to show them all off and you did. And now you only got Moscow to go, but one problem, you arrived, Eric has stolen a tank and blamed it on you and cost you your fame on the team, to get revenge, you make your own team and it’s now just you and Eric for the Hawaii footage and you manage to take the footage back and then it’s all over.

For the story, I do have to give it a 7 out of 10, I think the story seems a little bland, but it being the first storyline Tony Hawk game, it is quite understandable, I personally think the story is still alright to a certain extent. This is why this game only gets a “7” for the storyline

---------------

Depth..

For the Depth, 8 Levels, 1 bonus level, and 3 Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 levels which will make a total of 12 different levels for the player to experience with and this is by far the most levels in a single Tony Hawk game (which was broken with Underground 2 with 15 levels), and in each of these levels, they all have a lot of detail and a lot of interesting things you can skate on like ramp on, grind, or any other neat things. This is also the first game where you can actually get off of your board so you can be able to walk up stairs where it is impossible to go up to in past Tony Hawk games, and if you’re currently in a combo, you can quickly get off of your board within a certain amount of time to keep your combo alive. Plus with more content that is added, you also got two more customize modes such as create-a-trick (where you can take pre-existing tricks and create your own trick), and create-a-goal where you can take any of the12 levels or custom park (but you need to go to create-a-park for this) and you can assign a pacific goal you want completed such as High Score, SKATE, COMBO, a gap, perform tricks, etc., and this is great to challenge your friends or go online and challenge a lot of other people to do your goals. Other than all of these, it’s basically everything else from Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4. So, you can say that this game has a whole lot of interesting things.

For the depth, I will give this game a perfect 10 out of 10, with the amount of levels and two really unique customizing modes added into this game to go with create-a-skater and create-a-park, this will make a total of 4 customizing modes you can goof off on and that gives the player a lot more freedom to create on what they want to use to go skate. So, yeah, I think this does fit right in to have a “10” with all the things you can do.

---------------

Difficulty / Gameplay..

As for the difficulty, the Tony Hawk series can be really hard, and trying to get a 100% in this game will take like weeks to complete because some tasks seem impossible to complete, but I have managed to 100% complete the game though. The game has the same modes as the past Tony Hawk games, but Career mode has been replaced with “Story Mode” and in the Story Mode, you follow a certain amount of tasks to complete a chapter which in each level, it has 3 chapters (Vancouver has only 2 chapters (1 before and 1 after Slam City Jam) and return to New Jersey has 5 chapters), and some tasks can be really easy, and some can be a pain in the backside to get done, but each chapter (with the exception of a couple chapters) require you to complete the final task of the chapter to move one which the final task isn’t unlocked unless you complete a certain amount of little tasks before in the same chapter.

As for the Gameplay, is has dramatically changed since the last Tony Hawk game where the controls are a whole lot more accurate. Like I also mentioned in the Depth, you can also walk in this game which adds a whole lot more gameplay into the game such as trying to get to tough to reach places with the skateboard in previous games, but it isn’t tough anymore. So, I think to my personal point of view, I think Underground has really improved the Tony Hawk series’ performance.

For the Difficulty and the Gameplay, I have to give this game an 8 out of 10, it is quite hard with some of the tasks you have to do and some of the mandatory tasks at the end of the chapter can also be tough, especially some of the competition you have to battle in, although I haven’t really had too much of an issue with this.

Overall..

Overall, I think with this game, this game has opened up a huge door with a lot of new stuff for others to experience with in the Tony Hawk series, I think with the vast improvements seen with the graphics from what we were used on seeing in the Pro Skater series and transform into the Underground series is amazing, and I also have to say the same thing for the sound effects as well, the effects has also seen a lot of improvements as well I think more points to more realism than we have seen with Pro Skater, but I still think it can get a lot more realistic, and that is what we seen in later games, but for a game in 2003, this is the best they got at the moment. I also think with a huge selection of music also gives the gamer a freedom of choosing on what music they want to listen to although it’s only 3 genres or just turn it off and listen to all the background noises which is also nice to hear as well. But the thing that really got me is on all the customizing you can do like having 4 custom modes and a brand new storyline which I think it both has interest the gamer to this game a whole lot more than past games, although 2 creating modes were introduced back in Pro Skater 2, but we haven’t seen more added in until this game. So, all and all, this is a great game, not really known, but it’s still decent.

For my final thoughts on this game, this game right here has introduce a lot of brand new elements in the entire Tony Hawk series, customizing, a storyline, lot more details, a better soundtrack, and a bunch of other things, and all of this has made this game to be my 2nd most Tony Hawk game in the entire series, and I think you will also like this game if you do like skateboarding games and you do have a PS2, I would ask you to give this game a try, it might not be well known, but it is still one great game.

For the final score, I will give this game a 9 out of 10, the reason for the 9. Think about it, it does got a whole lot of interesting features added in such as a storyline added in for the first time which when it comes to storylines, I don’t care too much about them, but for this game, I do like on how it’s played out. Plus also with other features I also mentioned about this game. This is mostly on why I gave this game a “9” It is still a great score.

That’s it for this review.
