Should Pokemon had continued like how it went from Kanto to Johto

Ok I feel as though I should explain my self because the title is a little confusing. Ok so Pokemon generations 1 and 2 are by far the most unique Pokemon games out of the franchise, the stories told in both games are connected. What I mean by that is Generation 2 Pokemon games (Silver/Gold/Crystal) continued the story where generation 1 left off at. Do you think the rest of the Pokemon games in the franchise should have continued the trend of being able to travel back to the other regions and battle there gyms and the lead protagonist in that region? I know I do but I just wondered what others think about this idea/concept.

Remember Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal? Yes, they may be unique, but I honestly can't imagine if they did continue the going to another region trend. Think of the developers, they poured their sweat, blood and especially effort into that feature. If they kept on doing that, it would cost more money for the Pokémon games, and possibly might make them go bankrupt. Also, the feature would kinda get all stale.

Sure, if we take two generations and combine then together like Kanto-Johto, Hoenn-Sinnoh, Unova-Kalos, that would make things a little interesting, but note, the latter 4 are in different regions, so that could lead to a huge problem, unless you can be able to fly or any other connection to different places, but that might be too much data to use on one system, but doing it to only two region thing like I mentioned, that would be great though.
