My friends and family have told me that I have a very creative mind. I even have recently started to type up fan fictions about my favorite video game series, like that Pokemon one I did a while back that I never finished. All of this leads up to my question, should I look into journalism?

well, journalism is a whole separate gig from creative writing.  It often requires research... and lots of it. Most journalism from my knowledge also requires that you write more objective material, which might be less fun for you.  You'd want to be a fairly impressive and persuasive writer as well.  If you enjoy -all- types of writing, it might be a great idea to pursue it. However, if you only enjoy creative writing, I'd look the other direction.

Your best bet is to start by doing some research into the career, or to ask a career specialist / the appropriate university professor.  Also, if you're looking to make a lot of money, I don't think MOST journalists make it that big.  I could totally be wrong, though.

If you're not sure?  Try writing a non-creative piece and see how it makes you feel.  Perhaps you can write a report on something newsworthy, then let some third party people read it and offer critique?  I wouldn't ask your family or friends, because they might accidentally be biased even with the best of intents.

I love journalism, I'm a digital journalist for both video games and sports, and I love it. However, its nothing like a fan fic or a simple game review and to some oils nowhere near as much fun because its generally a lot more serious and strict in terms of guidelines. I would suggest going through various magazines and newspapers and simply going over various articles and checking to see if you could do stuff like that or if it would either be too difficult or not what you wanted. Maybe you could even start off by doing an article here on vizzed.

My vote would be no to looking into journalism. The reason why I say this because of what you said in your post ( Creative writing, fan fiction, etc.. ). Journalism would not be for you because it has stricter guidelines and is always about more mundane subjects ... not creative or fiction. That is not to say you cannot benefit from journalism because it does teach you better structure, spelling, etc.. A creative writer would be someone who does like : Greeting Card Author, Comic Book Writer, Novelist, Writing Coach, Advertising (Creative), Screenwriter, Songwriter (Lyricist), Freelance Short Fiction, Legacy Writer (write people’s bios and family histories), Ghost writer, Travel Writer (if you travel), Video Game Writer (includes storytelling/fiction!), Personal Poet (write personalized poems for weddings, funerals, childbirths, etc.), Playwright, Blogger. To be a creative writer in essence you have to get the basic writing skills, good grammar, etc... but most of all you have to be creative. Journalism will not promote that .. So I say do it on your own and if you need help feel free to ask in Vizzed forums ( because we have aspiring creative writers here ) or search online for help.

If you want to give it a try, start by blogging. Many websites like The Blaze and the Huffington Post accept new bloggers and usually don't have weekly quotas. In order to get more readers, try analyzing the news or trending subjects (using Google Trends). This will get you more readers.
