How much should we nitpick?

UGH! The question i dread.

On one hand, you have shows that obviously have it coming.Shows that do not think about the obvious flaws, that the audience can clearly see.
AHEM!

However..How far is to far? There are some that see the tiniest flaw in the show, and decide that the show is terrible.

Trust me,just because the ending of this is a bit rushed, does NOT mean it was ruined.

Now in theory, you could just tell these people "Good GOD! It's just anime. It does not have to be perfect!" But we go on and find our own little problems in other shows. So,when should we nitpick, and when should we not?

Well..That's a very hard question to answer. If you look at any great anime, that can be considered works of art in there own right,-
(Just a few examples)

You will quickly discover, that your masterpieces are not so brilliant after all.Everything has some mistakes, even if it is just one mistake,or one small miscalculation. And in my opinion, that should not be surprising. As all forms of film are just an illusion.Whether it's telling a story by time traveling,or hunting demons,or killing people by using a notebook of death.(A Death Note,if you will.) At some point you will see a flaw in the story, even if you don't see it the first time.

Alot of the most well known and loved anime of all time, have alot of flaws. For exmaple,in Dragon Ball Z,how is Frieza costantly able to come back to life? Even when he is vaporized with not even ashes remaining, just matter and cells, that are completely invisible to the human eye,he can still recover. That is impossible. As it's shown that not even most aliens have the tech that far in the future.

In Tokyo Ghoul, how the heck do ghouls go undiscovered when they are born,if there are humans helping the mother give birth? Don't they give a test,to see if the baby is a ghoul,or a human?

In Hellsing Ultimate, why is the Major so obsessed with war? What caused it? Was he just born this way,or was there some event in his life, that caused this to happen.

In chapter 699 of Naruto, how the heck do these two not die,of BLOOD LOSS?!'

What is Steins Gate? Is it a different plain of reality? Is it a deity of sorts? Its barely even explained in the visual novel to!

See? Its quite easy to find flaws in alot of things. And yet, alot of people still love these shows. But how come in say,Sword Art Online,or One piece, the flaws are much more noticeable? Is it just because we don't like these show in general, and that causes us to look for more flaws, whether we are consciously aware of this,or not?

Eh..I'd say kind of.I try to compare it to Pokemon.Alot of people try not to nitpick it alot,because..Well,its just a kids show. And its ingrained in alot of childhoods. There is not much of a reason to critique it,its just silly fun.But as i am sure you are aware of,from the various prof.Oak memes.-

Yeah, there are ALOT of flaws. Why the heck, would people give a ball, that can hold a biological organism,to a 10 year old..? I said it before, and i will say it again. That is one of the biggest flaws,in anime history.

However,i would say we accepted it for two reasons.
1.Its set in a world that focuses more on emotion, and not logic.Much like Alice in wonderland.
2.We were just so sucked in by that world, that we did not really notice those mistakes.(Plus,we are just stupid kids anyway.)

Then you start to think about crap like..Well,Sword Art Online. This loaf of overated bread, has a very hard time letting you connect to its characters.Because they are just BORING!..Well,in the first season at least. At the very best,it has a few good moments, and the world of Sword Art Online is quite interesting. And because most of the time it completely fails at getting us attached to the characters. It's alot harder not to notice the problems of the show.Character development, story pacing, and villains.(Seriously,a stupid fairy is the final boss..? I'm convinced i can punch that guy once, and he will drop dead.)

So here is my take on it.I personally believe,we are focusing on the wrong issue. Its not the fact that we are focusing on bigger mistakes, and not smaller ones, its the fact that the show failed to distract us,from noticing these mistakes.Every thing has flaws, thats just a fact of life.Nothing is perfect. And in order to distract us from these mistakes, you need good characters, and good character development.Good story, and good story pacing. And finally,an interesting environment. And don't get me wrong,if you have all three of those down, that does not give you a free pass on those mistakes. You can't just send in a paper, without checking over your work.( I used to do that when writing these, and i did terribly,at least in comparison to how i write now.)

The more plot holes an anime has,the more it needs to try to cover up these flaws, with good characters. The goal still remains the same: Convince the viewer that they are witnissing a story unfold, right in front of them.So much so,that they care about what happens in the end.Still...This is very hard for some shows to pull off, even if they have all 3 aspects down.More specifically, shows in the shonen genre. You know, that last 500 episodes? You can't expect the viewer to stay tuned in,for THAT LONG! Unless you're very, very, very GOOD! If you were to go that route, you would need to break your series up into films.Like the Berserk movies. This hurts shonen even more, when most of them don't have all 3 of these elements,to begin with. But hey nothing is perfect, and  Shonen is not the main target.

Naruto has good story pacing, but its characters are flawed, and its environment is hit and miss.
Sword Art Online has a great world, and concept, but its characters are flawed, and its story pacing is terrible.
Hellsing Ultimate has great characters, but the pacing for the first 3 episodes, feels oddly rushed. Also, the world and concept is interesting, but never fully explored or explained.

So..When is it really right to nitpick?
Well,i think the Nostalgia Critic said it best.

"Don't get to angry about a show or a movie,as it's already manipulated you, because its just an illusion.Just remember, don't complain in a puppet show that you can see the puppeteer.Complain instead, that you focused on him, more than the puppet."

Speaking of which,i'm gonna go watch some Nostalgia Critic right now,but before i do,i would like to ask you a question. What do you think of nitpicking? And how far do you think we should go?

Also, one more thing.I will be taking a bit of a break, for most of December. As i am feeling really burnt on,from writing these.I will still be on the site, but try to expect alot less of these.(To be honest,i don't even think anyone really expects these at all.Its just something i do to pass the time.) Anyhow, see yah later.*Waves*

Hmm..I want Ruby as my layout..NOW! Welp, time to send Patar to work again!

relinquish022 : Well what I think of nitpicking is if someone nitpicks so much about something, they should just stop watching the show because it is like if you spend most of your time finding the mistakes and nitpicking about them. Then are you really enjoying what you are seeing? Well, I guess unless what you are seeing is funny to you that it keeps you entertained as you wonder inside why that secretly is like that, but otherwise I think a person should stop watching the anime shows that they nitpick so much about and don't find it any bit of interesting or funny of what the nitpicks are about when they make their nitpicks. Do you feel the same way or is there something that you can think of that would keep you or some person to keep watching something when they just are searching for something to complain about in a show?

happiness7 : Well,i personally believe that a person can still nitpick something,if they still find it enjoyable. And if they don't like the show,i see no reason for them watching it.As i see no point in watching a show,if you don't find it enjoyable.Unless you're a reviewer,of course.

However,i think that someone can enjoy something, while also noticing the flaws of a show. For instance, the first 14 episodes of sword art online, are kind of stupid, but still enjoyable. This is because of the environment it created, which completely drew me in,every single episode.

Death Note has a good amount of flaws, and i still say its one of my favorite anime series of all time.

In RWBY,the animation and voice acting, are terrible most of the time. But the action is brilliant!

But in general,if you're just sitting there in agony, complaining about the show constantly,i see no reason to watch it.And i have no problem with someone nitpicking a show,as long as they don't say that the smallest of flaws, completely ruins a series.

There are also guilty pleasures.A.K.A,shows that you know suck, but you still like them.

HEY! Us reviewers watch anime's we like despite popular believe... ok I have watched all of School Days before and when I finally get the money to start doing online reviews I'll have to one day watch it again... I'm getting off topic

Anyways nitpicking, this topic will either have you running to the hills, or have you go meh. as a reviewer (I am btw, just REALLY hard to find any of the written reviews I have out there, might have to get around to reprinting those, getting off topic again)I have a lot of experience with nitpicking anime, but, the question is how much should we nitpick.

Really that depends. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and also some people may just watch anime just for the fun of it, not caring about if it has sooooo many flaws it's not even funny anymore. While other people might be looking for a anime that they find to be good, so they will watch the first 3-4 episodes and nitpick them to the far ends of the Earth, and if they find it to be good with minimum flaws, in there mind, they will pick it up. Of course you also have anime reviews who will look through an entire anime and nitpick parts of it, but also will try to look deeper then a casual watcher so they can get their own opinion and talk about it.

So really how much should you nitpick? Depends on what or how you want to watch an anime. I do sometimes turn off the reviewer part of my brain (quiet it's possible) to just enjoy a anime. For example: SAO. I have nitpicked that before and it does have flaws, but just enjoying it, SAO is one of my favorite anime.

Also one more point with nitpicking, most of the time as a reviewer I try not to nitpick the very small stuff unless it's really bugging me.

Hope though all my rambling you were able to get a good answer from me.
