I listen to a lot of motivational music, though I know the music I listen to is very cheesy and not everyone's taste.

For example, even though it's a wrestling theme, stuff like this:



Gets me really hyped up. Also, anything by Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, or Rise Against gets me going and motivated.

The first two because I'm a big fan of Ska-Punk music. The last one because Rise Against is really f***ing good.

If I need to get a few things done, I'll put some upbeat songs on.

If I really have to get something done, I'll put on a binaural beat (on youtube). It's literally a slowly increasing tone that's so annoying that it keeps me from getting distracted until I finish.

I don't really NEED music to motivate me. It really really helps, but I don't need it.
I tend to listen to modern rock, as it tends to get me motivated the most. Stuff like VGM is better suited for kicking back or trying to fall asleep. (Though Professor Layton has the power to turn my brain on for homework)

As far as motivation goes, it depends on the subject matter and its significance to me. If I'm not passionate about it, then it will probably take me longer to do, likewise, if I am, then I can get it done fairly quickly. I don't listen to music when I do homework that often, especially when it is new material because the music will more than likely distract me from the material and potentially make it harder to grasp the subject. I listen to music when I am brushing up on familiar material though, since I don't need to devote as much attention as I would to learn something new. For me, music just helps me pass the time when I'm re-familiarizing myself with familiar material because that's the only time I ever use it. I listen to it all the time outside of academically related matters.
