First and foremost, I would like to clarify that I am not a religious individual myself. However, I come from a somewhat religious background and so have a bit of knowledge bout this sort of thing.

Now then, there is a bible verse I have never understood :"the meek shall inherit the earth". I do not believe how that would keep with Christian values OR be true in general. Hell, let's take Jesus himself.Even ignoring all of the supernatural stuff (which even some of the believers I know do not believe themselves), he would fit the definition of mighty pretty well. What is, therefore, the point of this line?

Meek is a Character trait, not a grade of power. One can be powerful and meek. The thing is, back then, people who were meek didn't seem to have power. (It hasn't really changed.) It's being humble, kind, considerate, not over-talkative etc.

Definition of Meek: Adjective: "quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive." None of these are bad. Jesus set an example of being quiet, yet at the right time. One can be a "bad" meek person, but in general, a meek person is good. If one is submissive to authority, it's always good. (Unless they violate the rules set by God.)

As for the Spiritual/ Supernatural things in the Bible: The ones who don't believe them, don't regard the Bible as true. They change it to fit their meaning, which isn't right. I could rip anyone's words to make it say anything, but that would be slander. (Which is actually able to be prosecuted, by law.)

darthyoda :
For something to be slander, it has to be proven untrue, and since the bible isnt proven, thats really not possible.

That being said that particular verse was regarding the people of good nature. Other similar ones are those that come first on earth will come last in the kingdom of heaven, and it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to make it into the kingdom of heaven.
The bible is much like the teachings of bhudda, it does not condone keeping more than you need.

darthyoda : Wow, thanks for reminding me why don't I tend to visit Catholic forums. For a member of a group that preaches love and tolerance, that whole "If they say something I do not like I will prosecute them" thing is a huuuuge douchebag move.

thenumberone : I also have an issue with those lines, seeing as Jesus was, aside from not precisely the quiet, accepting type (the whole thing at the temple comes to mind), from a wealthy background (he must have known how to speak Greek in order to speak with Pillatus, and the translation for Joseph's job would be more akin to the sort of carpenter that works in house building, which could have meant the good status and income of a master craftsman).

lisalo : I didn't say that I would, I was saying that slander (Making something say something that wasn't said.) is a legal problem. I wouldn't prosecute anyone, especially here, but it is implied in the US Constitution that you can prosecute someone for it. The worst thing is changing someone's words. If I made someone say that they hate all other races, it wouldn't be appreciated. I don't really think that you read my post properly.

Regarding that you say that Jesus was rich, no one was really rich, other than Merchants and Royalty. Greek was commonly known, especially among those who did business. It was the official language of the Roman  Empire, most spoke it, or else the Bible wouldn't have been easily transported throughout the Empire, within a few years. The idea of Jesus not being quiet isn't right either. Jesus said nothing, when faced with wrong accusations, and in that case, most would never keep perfect silence.

lisalo :

You know, I questioned that verse for a really long time. I didn't understand it, and if I'm being completely honest, I still don't fully understand it. What I do understand, however, is what it means to be meek. There's another term for meek, one we all know quite well. 'Shy.'

A shy person is usually seen as a person who is quiet, doesn't speak very loud, tends to keep to themselves. We have also put it down as a bad thing, however I don't think being shy is bad. A person isn't shy, they're meek. And a meek person is a strong person. A mighty person if you will.
Now I know that sounds weird, but let's just think about it for a second.

Jesus, son of God, was a mighty person. He was extremely powerful. However, He was also humble in all His actions. When the Pharisee's came to Him, and accused Him, Jesus told them that He was only doing what He saw His Father doing. To me that is a humble person. That is a meek person. He knows His strength, but does not boast it around.

But back to Matthew 5:5. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.(KJV)"

Actually, I'm going to go to the start of that chapter.

"And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. (KJV; Matthew 5:1-11)"

He was teaching the Disciples. Teaching them that no matter the situation, no matter what they are-whether they have are mourning, are meek, are in poverty, they are still children of God, and as children of God we inherit the world around us.

Every person has different interpretations of the Bible, and beliefs. That's the reason for all the denominations in the world. This is my own interpretation of what I've read, studied, and learned from my own teachers in my life. We can talk all day about how Jesus was a mighty man, because He was-with or without the supernatural involved, but I also think that much like a kaleidoscope, there are many sides to Jesus.

Not sure if I answered your question, I feel like I did, but I'm sorry if I didn't.

Im not defending it, im just stating what the bible says. Its not like I actually believe any of it.

darthyoda :
The romans spoke latin, not greek. Their gods, prior to christianity, were mostly greek. The romans were interesting, in that for every civilisation they conquered, they tended to accept their gods too.
