Well what do we have here? An old Rom hack? Splendid.

This is my first game review...like ever. So if I miss anything or word something funny. Please let me know and I'll try to correct what ever needs fixing.

Sonic Epoch is a Gameboy Advance conversion of a 'canceled' PC game by the same name. Taking place in the SatAM universe, that's Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. Not to be confused with The Adventure series that was also playing during this time.

Created by a one man crew, it takes players  on a journey as Sonic and Sally in a dystopian esk future as they and the remaining Freedom Fighters attempt to defeat the Evil Doctor Robotnik and try  to take back there home.

Graphics - 6Shotty by today's standards. When this game came out it was rather decent for a early 2000's GBA Rom hack. The MS Paint style does work for the most part. Though a bit more polish would have done the game some good.

-Granted this was made to 'theoretically' run on a Gameboy Advance. So there were some limitations.

Sound - 3

Sound is pretty bad. I muted the audio early on and never felt the need to turn it back on. So if it got any better as the game progressed; I never heard it.

Addictiveness - 5

Despite a slow start. You find yourself compelled to continue playing. Just to see what would happen next. Plus the ability to swap out characters does add to the 'mixing up factor. Since some levels are better suited for a certain characters and can be down right aggravating to play though at time. If you don't choose the right one.

-So don't be afraid to switch once in a while. It will save you a headache later on.

Story - 7Story is the classic 'what if' alternate future that shows the player what would happen if a certain character disappeared from the timeline. This character being Sonic. With the blue blur no longer being the Freedom Fighter's strongest asset and greatest hero. Things fall apart rather quickly. Forcing the surviving members to go into hiding as there land is conquered.

We get a sort of Rip Van Winkle thing here. (For those of you who know who that is, will get the reference.) With Sonic being more or less trusted into a future that he had no part in making.

-showing just how important he is to the group.

In this instance anyway. The Archie comics told of a different outcome if Sonic vanished, but that's a story for another day.

Depth - 5

The creature attempted to make a vast world in this sudo-Future, but everything starts to look the same after a while. Just with a new coat of paint or slight tweak.

Difficulty - 4

Once you get used to the odd controls. The game really isn't that hard. It's more or less a standard platformer that attempts to throw in a few other game elements.

Overall - 6
Despite some issues early on. It was a decent game. Some minor issues early on, but once you get over those is a fun time killer on a rainy afternoon. It was a noble effort and does show that a lot of time was put into creating it.Final Thoughts

This is one of those games that will either be liked by the Sonic Fan-base for it 'different' style of game play. Or outright hated, since it lacks many elements that players are used to seeing. The creator of this even admired that it was a rush job and just wanted to get it done. Which leaves us to wonder what it would have been like if they put as much passion into is as they had in the PC version.

However, for a game made during the early 2000's. Before much of  the vast amount of programs and such we have available today was easy to access. It's not bad. Not great, but not bad.
