Fall is a time when baseball winds down and football season is in full swing. However a lot of people get baseball fever. Some enjoy playing baseball games and some like sports games. So I will be reviewing MLB 99 by 989 Sports for the Play Station I.

Plot: 5
This is a sports game so they are not known to have plots. This game allows the player to play through the 1998 schedule for major league baseball. The stats are from the 1997 season. The main goal for this game is to build a championship team. Either by trading players, playing through the season, creating players or even drafting. That is pretty much the plot in this game. It is a typical sports game there are no bosses to beat like in Mega Man or Mario games. No levels to go through. So that is why I do not feel like the plot for MLB 99 deserves higher than a 5. On the other hand building a championship team is a reasonable goal for this type of game as with most sports games. So I feel like it does not deserve lower. I give the plot a 5 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 7
The graphics in this game are mostly good considering this is one of the earlier games in the series. The stadiums look like the real stadiums in baseball, which is a nice touch. The players look like they do when you see them on TV. The colors were nicely done too matching the all of the team's colors.  The graphics did have some flaws though. The spectators in the stands look fuzzy and look like dots. They do not look like actual people like they do in later baseball games in the 989 sports series. Also the grass in the stadiums looks a little fuzzy. I was not actually surprised since this is not one of the earlier games in the series. But this game was made when the playstation was still fairly new.

The Controls in this game are mostly good. The hitting controls are good and so is the pitching. The only time the controls feel sluggish is when throwing the baseball to the bases. The controls also feel sluggish when running the bases. I do not know if that was done intentionally to reflect the real life learning skills of the players? Still, it can be aggravating. The control are good but not sharp like later play station games would be. However, this is an early play station game and one of the early MLB Games so I would suspect there to be flaws.

Sounds:8
The sounds of this game are very good and to me this is were MLB99 shines. The announcing is done by legendary announcer Vin Scully. Vin Scully sounds like he does in real life which is a very nice touch. The pop the ball makes when the player hits a home run is a nice touch too. Even the game's theme music has a nice touch. The sound in this game is very good. I give the sound a very good 8 out of 10 rating. I do not think it should get higher than an 8 because they are no stages as in action games. Still MLB 99 has a very good sound to it

Addictiveness:7
This game when it came out was a very fun game to play. I played this game a lot and it satisfied my baseball fever I would get when the season would end. Now as newer and great baseball games in the series came out such as 2001, 2002, and 2003. I played this one less due to those games coming out. Even though I may not play this one as much as I do the other MLB games. This is still a fun game to play and I still find myself going back to this one. So with that being said I give this a 7 out of 10.

Depth: 6
This being a sports game obviously there is not going be huge depth in this game compared to a Mega Man or Mario game. Still this game does have some depth to it. If you are like me and have multiple teams it is fun to play a season through with different teams. So that adds for depth. Also when you play a team you get that team's players that were part of the 1997 roster. I also like to get players that are on different teams that I like and play the game that way. Now, this does not have the depth that later MLB games would have. You can draft in this game so that adds depth but the later MLB games had more features in them. Thus, I give the depth a 6 out of 10.

Difficulty: 7
The difficulty in this game was hard for me to rate for several reasons. The first being you can make the season play through easy for you by trading for the best players. Second, you can build your team to make it were they win easy. On the other hand, if you want to play using the teams's 1997 roster then the difficulty increases. Teams that had winning records in 1997 have better players. Teams that did not do so good have not so good players. It seems like the computer is programmed for that. I have gotten more hits, strikeouts (if the player is a pitcher) and home runs hit by good players. When I play with a player that had a bad 1997 season I find that i get more outs as a batter, or if the player is a pitcher he gives up lots of runs despite you being in control. So the difficulty comes from this being a reflection of the 1997 season. Players who had good seasons the player will find they are easier to get hits or strike outs with compared to a player who did not have a good season. If you chose to draft in this game that adds difficulty because you have to try to snag up your players that you want and hope the computer does not put them on a different team (though you can trade for them). The draft will also allow you build you team up from the ground which can be challenging.  MLB 99 was hard to rate cause you can make the game easy or make it hard. But I give it a 7 out of 10 at the end of the day simply because the game makes the players have stats similar to their 1997 stats. That can either be good or bad.

Overall: 8

MLB 99 came out in 1998. The Play Station had been out for close to two years but was just staring to become very popular. MLB 99 also allowed players to play with newly expansion teams the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks. So that made this game very fun. This game is sometimes over shadowed by later MLB games such as 2001, 2002 and 2003, which came out when the Play Station was at its peak.

I really had fun playing this game. I got this game a little later after it came out. I got my Play Station one in 1999 as a Christmas gift. My parents got me Mega Man Legends, Bust a Move 99, MLB 99 and MLB 2000. I remember playing this game a lot. Being able to play through a season with my favorite teams, being able to trade for my favorite players, and drafting made this game good. As I stated it would get overshadowed in later games and as such I started to play them more. But even today 16 years later since this game came out I still like to go back to this one.

Now, this game did have some flaws. The graphics were a little fuzzy at times and so was the controls. I was not surprised to be honest as this was one of the earlier Play Station and 989 games. So naturally they would be some flaws. These flaws were cleaned up in later games. Also this game did not have as much options as later games in the 989 series had.  Later 989 MLB games had were you could play through spring training as well as franchise building were you act as the GM and try to your team to the play offs. Again though that is probably due to this being the 2nd title in the series. In addition, the play station was still seen as being new and was just starting to become popular. Lot of the earlier play station games before 1999 had some fuzzy graphics and sluggish controls at times. Those games also had less depth than games made after 1999.

As far as recommending this game. Yes I would recommend this game. Despite its flaws this game is a good game overall. The flaws to most gamers would be minor so do not let them stop you from enjoying this game. If you like baseball or sports games like me then this game is for you. If you need to satisfy your baseball fever play this game. I give MLB 99 a good rating of 8 out of 10. I hope you take time to enjoy this often forgotten MLB game. So Remember MLB 1999
