I was a good climber and in decent shape 3 months ago.  I had surgery in 3 places at once, my shoulder, my chest, and my forearm, to remove cysts.  I have a bad habit, if I can't climb I don't do any workouts because I only workout for climbing to get better.  I know I should continue to workout somewhat even after surgery, but its tough for me when my goals are no longer there.  For the last 3 months I have been eating pizza and spaghetti, which are my comfort foods, and sitting playing video games, no physical activities or any other food for the last 3 months.  Oh and I drank V8 fusion about a bottle a day, I don't know if its really healthy or not, but since it tastes good its probably unhealthy.  Now I am able to climb again but my grade has gone down from a 5.11a to 5.10b, and I gained 16 lbs, and 3 minutes on my mile jog and every thing else has gone down (if you look at my previous thread you will see how weak I am now compared to before.)  I still love climbing and the workouts I hate now for some reason, maybe laziness now because I have been lazy for 3 months now.  If anyone has any input or idea I would be very happy to hear them or even just your thoughts, and I hope I can one day get to my goals.

Goals: 140 lbs, tones muscles, and climbing a 5.12a one day,.  (5.12a is actually my dream, but is it attainable at my age?)

My stats as of October 13th, 2014

Weight: 182.0 lbs
Belly inches: 41 inches
One mile jog: 10 minutes and 30 seconds - 10:30
1 1/2 mile jog: 16 minutes and 20 seconds - 16:20
Pull ups: 3
Push ups: 15
Sit ups: 61 (no feet being held and 3 minute time limit)
Best climb: 5.10b
Best Boulder: V2

Good luck dude, if you have a goal set it might be easier for you to achieve it. How much is 5.10b in climbing? And 5.12a?

Unfortunately I don't know what advice I can offer to get in shape for climbing because I don't know much about climbing, personally. However.... I find it amazing that you do!  My sister and I were just talking the other day about how we wanted to comb, so I wanted to ask if YOU had any tips. How do you start?  Where can you go to learn? How long does it take to get in shape enough to practice on your own?

What do all those terms and numbers mean?

Okay.. haha.... you don't have to answer all those... but if you can point me in the right direction, man... I'd love it!  Then maybe in the far future, we can talk about climbing together.

What about mountain biking?

That's a bit tough to accomplish especially you just had three surgerys. Are you able to work out as much as you did before? It can be a bit tough to get back to working out. I think you should take it slow on your workouts for now since I don't know how long the surgerys should help you get back in working shape.

It can be possible to accomplish that goal at your age especially when I saw a male in his 60s in great shape for running. However, I am not sure how this would work for you especially when you had three surgerys.

I wish you the best of luck though! Take your time at your own pace and do not rush on your workouts.

juuldude : Hhmm.  5.10b is like pretty tough.  There are grades or rankings and they go like this.  5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8, 5.9, 5.10a, 5.10b, 5.10c, 5.10d, 5.11a, 5.11b and so on to 5.15b which is basically climbing nothingness.  A 10b to an 12a is a big jump in rankings.  I was up to 11a sometimes 11b, but 12a looks really tough to climb.  And yeah I hope I can achieve 5.12a as its my dream one day.  My dream used to be climb 5.13a but I dropped it to 5.12a to make it attainable to me.  Thanks for your kind words about goals.

Ah, thank you for helping me figure on that system works. I forgot to ask about that so thanks for clarifying it for me.

How is your preparation going?
