Ahh, Pokémon red, a classic, the first installment of the amazing series, this game gets a 10/10 just for that. Haha no just bull crapping you, Pokémon red is honestly one of the most outdated, primitive Pokémon games and it’s aged about as well as space jam. This game has more glitches than battle field 4’s release version, the balancing of draven’s old passive, and the graphics of an old nes game (There was no excuse for how poor the graphics were, there were numerous games with better graphics on the game boy). I didn’t grow up with this game, so I have an unbiased opinion free of nostalgia for this game, you may disagree with me, and that’s ok, but I’m reviewing this game as a standalone game, the sequels will not be thrown into the score, as they don’t exist! So without further ado, let’s get on with the review!

GRAPHICS (4/10)
Off to a bad start? No the graphics aren’t ground breaking and yes I understand this is a game boy game, but honestly the graphics are still bad, for one the sprites, oh my god, the sprites, they’re HORRIBLE! Look at charizard; does he look the least bit intimidating? Golbat looks like a 4 year old drew a picture of the monster in his closet. Mankey looks like a pig that went through lab testing. Machop looks like a starving child (Because the first thing I want to see when I think Pokémon is a starving child)! Golem goes from looking like a bad ass rock monster to, chibi eyes? Kingler’s sprite isn’t bad, but what happened to him? Both his claws are huge! Chansey is just… derpy lol. And finally we have omnastar, and apparently disco is as old as he is. So yes these sprites are BAD! The trainer sprites aren’t too bad though, they look the way you’d expect them to look, a lad looks like a little boy, a nerd looks like a stereotypical scientist and so forth. The environments look decent, you can clearly tell that the plant blocking your progress is a tree and that building is a house, they’re not horribly drawn, but not the most architectural. And the coloration (on the super gameboy and gbc) is poor but this is pretty excusable for a gameboy title. Overall the graphics are flawed but aren’t terrible by any stretch of the imagination, if you’re looking for a good game with great graphics, look elsewhere as this game doesn’t deliver in either departments. And remember, while graphics aren’t EVERYTHING, they still play an important role in game’s appeal and it usually tells you if the designer’s put effort into the game.

SOUND (6/10)
The sound thankfully isn’t as bad as the graphics, but it’s not up there with the mega man series or teenage mutant ninja turtles. The music is pretty docile and tame, nothing wrong with it, but the soundtrack itself is pretty dull, honestly there isn’t much to say about it, you have a mixed bag at best, with great tracks like the battle themes and viridian forest, these tracks are upbeat and give you a sense of adventure and excitement. But there’s also boring tracks like route 1, saffron city and the cave themes, these tracks are dull and usually make want to pop in some A$AP Rocky while I find my way through rock tunnel. The cries aren’t worth writing home about either; again it’s a mixed bag of good and bad. There are only about 13 cries due to data limitations, this isn’t an issue really, but it’s worth mentioning nevertheless. The sound effects are probably the strongest part in all honesty, the bike bell and iconic thud noise are the strongest links in this case, they’re nice and all and I appreciate it. In all the sound is fair and all, but I feel they could’ve made the music a bit more adventurous and moody, but as I said, the sound in all isn’t terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

ADDICTIVENESS (3/10)
Whoa, we just went from 0 to 100 in the criticism of this game, the game play is put it simple, broken… First off let’s start with the positives of the battle system, I like it, limiting your skills/spells/magic/attacks/whatever to 4, it leaves a strategic sense, you want your mew to learn ice beam but already have 4 move slots? Looks like you’ll have to say goodbye to hyper beam. And the 6 party member limit was fairly new as most Jrpgs had 4 members at most in your party. The fact that all your monsters have 1 or 2 elements adds a nice strategic touch that keeps you from using 6 of the same monster with no penalty (aside from a certain type that I will mention later) but it kinda ends there to be honest. The over world is probably the tamest and most stable part of the game, and yes there are game breaking glitches such as the glitch city and the reprogramming glitch, but for the most part the glitches are difficult to just “stumble upon” and require a bit of digging deep into the game to get anywhere. The designs for the most part make sense and aren’t bad in any way, there are many oversights that make the game easier than it already is, one of the most well known ones is the pokedoll bug where a certain boss can be bypassed by using a pokedoll to escape the battle and downright ignore the boss, although this is just as easy to avoid as it is to perform, which kind of makes me forgive it. But this game is burdened to no end with bugs and balancing issues, first off the psychic type (element) is BROKEN, the only type that resists psychic is itself and psychic is only weak to bug, and considering pin missile was your best bet for a bug type move at the time, it was a useless weakness to give it. The special stat is the 2nd most broken element, as a Pokémon with good special stat can take and make hits, making Pokémon with high defense and special unstoppable forces, the special stat also triggers many glitches that allow you to catch any Pokémon you want, and where’s the fun in that, Pokémon is supposed to be a social game where you trade monsters, this glitch makes it such a chore to do just that, because why go out and socialize when I can just break the game and get a gengar myself? The lesser oversights and battle errors include, the fact that all moves not named swift have a chance of missing, regardless of what the accuracy says. Also rage is poorly programmed, your attack rises each time you’re damaged, but you never lose pp for the move and you’re locked into the move unable to switch out until your Pokémon faints. While we’re on the subject of poorly programmed moves, the partial trapping moves are put it short, strange… They prevent the opposing Pokémon from moving AT ALL, and ghosts, while not damaged by the move, are still effected by the trapping, this makes for cheap strategies such as an agility dragonite, which out speeds everything in the game and can stall until the opposing monster is in the ko range for a hyper beam. Speaking of hyper beam, if hyper beam ko’s anything, (whether it be a Pokémon or substitute) you don’t need to recharge the attack, and explosion/self destruct, don’t faint the user when you kill a substitute. There are many, many more problems with the game’s battle system, but I don’t feel like writing a 7000 word essay on the bad programming, so I’ll leave you with this info.

STORY (5/10)
The story, is umm, lacking? You’re a boy who just turned 10 and professor oak has called you in, you go to his lab to find he’s not there, so you decide to do what you’ve been taught not to… go into the tall grass, but just as you attempt to leave the comfort of pallete town, prof. oak stops you, you go into his lab and receive your first Pokémon as a birthday gift and you’re off on your way to become the champion of Pokémon! The story is pretty cookie cutter, and for an rpg, that’s problematic, whether it’s made for kids or not. The crime organization is pretty dull, they’re goal is to make money by stealing rare Pokémon and selling them in the rocket game corner and black market. You’re rival is the stereotypical rich kid, he’s always a step ahead you, he always knows your team in advance to make counter strategies to you, and his connections with his grandfather make his adventure much easier than yours. While lacking much of a story, it’s not a terrible story, not by a long shot, but it’s a pretty plain and overused one. When you play an rpg, you expect an expansive story, but this game does not deliver unfortunately.

DEPTH (7/10)
On the contrary of how I’ve been beating this game up, the depth is actually decent! There’s a total of 150/151 monsters to obtain, and it’s certainly not easy, as some monsters are unavailable in the wild and require evolution or trading to obtain, and even the ones you can catch, some of them (COUGH tauros COUGH) are difficult to catch due to a low catch rate multiplier, and in the safari zone, all Pokémon found there can run away, making it a time consuming, but not redundant process. There’s also plenty to do in the game, but no side quests sadly. You need to collect 8 badges from gym leaders (the equivalent to bosses in this game) and some of the bosses are actually a bit challenging (unless of course, you’re using psychic Pokémon) the dungeons also are plentiful and contain many goodies that reward curiosity and exploration. The after game is lacking though, the only thing added is a new dungeon, and the new dungeon is difficult and contains the strongest Pokémon in the game. On the downside, the level curves requires lots of grinding, which artificially makes the game longer, ruins what it has going for it. Over all the game offers quite a bit of content, but there’s a bit of redundancy mixed in and the after game is pretty weak compared to the rest of the game.

DIFFICULTY (5/10)
The game is easy, there I said it. You can easily just grind and beat all the trainers in the game, and using a psychic type, essentially guarantees you’ll win any matchup. Balancing issue are obviously a big factor here, the fact that the special stat makes special attackers both tanks and sweepers makes for a fairly cheap experience overall. The dungeons are hard though, rock tunnel and cerulean cave probably being the top contenders for most frustrating dungeons, each has a maze element and rock tunnel requires flash in order to increase your odds of getting out there alive, while cerulean cave is filled with tough wild Pokémon that only the best of trainers and grinders can navigate through alive. You may experience some trouble early on in the game if you chose charmander and if you forgo catching a nidoran, as brock can kick your butt with his onix, and misty can destroy charmander if you don’t come prepared with a grass or electric Pokémon. But choosing bulbasaur or squirtle will literally make the beginning of the game a cake walk, and this hurts the overall score. And lastly, the game just, isn’t hard; there are no complex quests or strong bosses that can manage even high level fighters, the game was made for kids, and it shows difficulty wise.

OVERALL (3.4/10)
Overall, the game has aged horribly, the graphics are poor, and the sound is average, the gameplay, oh my god the gameplay… The depth is the buried gem in this game and the game’s story is lacking, not mention the game is very easy. Thank you for taking the time to read my review and I’ll take criticism as long as it’s constructive =)

Cradily is love : Thanks for the summon! First off take this *hands flame shield* you're going to need it unless you want to be ripped apart by the genwunners... And probably some people who don't even consider themselves genwunners as well... Well anyways on to what I think about the review:

First of nice review! You went into a lot of detail on each category and I really enjoyed reading it. With that said even I think you rated the game too harshly (yes I know that's coming from the guy who called it one of the most overrated games of all time). So I figure I'll just give my opinion on how you rated it in each category.

First of the graphics. While I have to agree with how downright horrendous the sprites can be (I mean seriously Golbat freaked me out) the game otherwise while not exactly eye candy doesn't look bad either. So I think you could've given it just a slightly higher rating.

I actually find the soundtrack to be probably one of my favorite things about the game. I liked all of the tracks and many of them are memorable and I think they all fit the game pretty well. As you said the cries are nothing to write home about really but it can be excused. Overall I feel like you could've given this category a higher score.

Okay so Addictiveness, this is probably the one thing I outright disagree with. Yes the game does have A LOT of problems in terms of balancing issues, bugs and such. And yes it was meant to be a social experience and it was I mean at the time this was released it pretty much prolonged the Gameboys life span on it's own and everybody were trading Pokemon and battling against each other. People didn't really have access to the same information we have today so many people were completely unaware of the numerous glitches that riddled the game even then most glitches can be avoided fairly easily as they usually require you to do pretty specific things. And there is a difference between having to deal with the balancing issues of the game and just outright cheating/abusing the bugs in the game to get certain Pokemon.

What I'm trying to say is, it's definitely a flawed game but it still manages to retain the addictive feel of Pokemon games (which is evident due to how many people who still play it today and enjoy it) and keeps you addicted so I feel like you should've definitely rated it higher in this regard. Also a side note the balancing issues of the game might be somewhat more relevant to the difficulty category instead.

So for the Story I don't really have much to say in this regard as I do somewhat agree with what you said though I think it's worth mentioning that this was the first Pokemon game in the series so the whole concept of earning gym badges, taking on the elite four and defeating the evil organization was fairly new at the time so it does gets points for originality.

I agree with what you said about the depth though I think it's worth taking to account that though it isn't very long by today's standards for a gameboy game this was quite the package content wise so I think you should've rated it higher based on that.

I pretty much agree with everything you said regarding the difficulty of the game. Once you know of the balancing issues you can quite easily take advantage of them and the fact that it's a game made primarily for kids does show. With that said it can also be tough especially in the beginning if you pick Charmander or just in general if you lack knowledge of what's ahead. I don't think you should lower the overall score because of it being a lot easier with Squirtle or Bulbasaur in the beginning though as I'm pretty sure that it was more or less intended due to the dialogue Professor Oak gives about each Pokemon when you pick your starter.

In the end though I'm merely stating my opinion, I can see where you're coming from and pretty much all the complaints you had about the game had at least some truth to them in my opinion and even though I don't fully agree with the score I can still see that you put a lot of thought and detail into this review and  and for being your first on the site (at least as far as I'm aware of) this is really impressive. I hope to read more from you sometime in the future!

Just realized this kind of became a review in of itself... Oh well.

Zlinqx : Thanks for the shield man! I gave the graphics a low score because of how outdated they looked, take legend of Zelda: Link's awakening, released in 1993, the graphics are SEVERELY more appealing than pokemon's, and just so you don't bring up the 1st party argument, I brought exhibit B: Duck tales, released in 1990 ( 6 years before pokemon) looks so pleasing to the eye in gameboy standards, even compared to nothing! So that's why I rated it a 4

The music, my musical tastes are the opposite of the soothing elevator music of pokemon (I'm a hip hop kinda guy), but I do feel that my tastes kind of got in the way, but nevertheless that's what I think of the music, I also stated that a lot of the tracks were sleepers when the game is supposed to be an adventure J Rpg, not a museum.

Addictiveness is probably where we clash the most, I already mentioned most of the glitches are hard to just "Stumble upon" making me forgive it a bit. But glitches are still glitches, no matter which way you put it, I honestly don't see why sonic 06 gets this ammount of hate when most of the game breakers, like pokemon are a bit hard to find and require digging deep. Also programming errors are still just that, it ruins the experience and makes you wonder if they even bug tested the game. And finally the balancing issues was a problem that ruined the gameplay as well as the difficulty.

I already mentioned the game for the sake of the review, is a standalone title, so no creativity. There are so many games that require you to collect X ammount of items, then go after 4 more levles, like mega man, this game progresses like a mega man game in a way, mega man was created in 1988, pokemon was made in 1996, who did it first? Evil organizations are nothing new, and the money scheme is even more cliche.

I rated the depth low because, while the game had an outstanding main game, it had no side quests and barely an after game, the game is quite beefy and that's great, but optional objectives and after gaming makes an rpg.

Difficulty, ehh can't argue with you, but not giving charmander means to defend himself (really would it be so hard to give him double kick or something?) against Brock makes the game punishing for choosing the baby drake over the reptilian bulb or turtle.

In all I can see what you're getting at, but I came prepared to back up my score!

Even though I disagree with what you've said about the game (personally, despite its flaws - it isn't a perfect game and I'm not saying it is - it was super fun!) and find some of your points nitpicky, I thought this was a well crafted review, and some time seems to have gone into it.

One thing I have to note... the Pokedoll glitch, while easy to do, is also something (similar to Glitch City and the Missingno Glitch) that you are unlikely to just "stumble" upon. In my first couple of playthroughs as a kid (I grew up on Pokemon) I never stumbled upon the glitch, and it wasn't until like my 5th or 6th playthrough that I was even aware of it.

The game is riddled with small bugs and glitches that will go ignored, simply because most of them are out of the way and unlikely to be brought up in normal gameplay.

This is important. Back in the early 90's, playtesting never really factored in these kinds of bugs, because it wasn't something that came to mind. Playtesting methods have gotten more in depth over the past decade. Of course... that's not a good thing. Because while now they are catching these small insignificant out of the way bugs (or in some cases, game cartridge destroying, though to apply the bug you have to want to apply it generally) but they aren't catching right in your face gameplay altering bugs.

When played the right way (like 90% of gamers play) Pokemon Red (and Blue) both play extremely smoothly (although the game speed was always a little slow for my liking) and don't suffer from any real bugs.

I'm a little confused over your score on graphics. Maybe I just view the scale a little differently, but anything from a 1-4 is generally "terrible" and inexcusable. You say in your review that graphics "aren't" terrible, and give me the impression that the graphics are ok, or routine for a gameboy/gameboy color game (which they are). That would imply something akin to a 6 but I'm mostly nitpicking myself. I'm trying to get a gauge on your scale so your review makes more sense to me.

It also confuses me why you'd give difficulty a 5 after saying the game was easy (pro-tip: It is easy, so easy it probably deserves a 1. All Pokemon games are easy as hell). Am I right in assuming all the points come from the level design? (It's worth noting that I count level design under graphics, as well as difficulty). The Seafoam Caverns always irked me growing up. I hated going through it. Even today, with repels, it's an annoying exercise in futility.

At any rate, I thought it was a decent review, although I disagree with your overall assessment (a 3.4? Really?)

legacyme3 : Nice well written response. I messed up I meant to give it 4.8, and even then I think my formula is weird, if you could give me a proper one, I'd appreciate it =)

On my first run (I was 7 on my GBA) I thought the pokedoll glitch was the only way to get past "Ghost" as I didn't know about the rocket hideout as of yet and I tried every item in my bag, the pokedoll worked and I went right past it.

I'm a bit lost on my gauge, first review I've ever written, but a 4 in my eyes means "Mediocre"

The difficulty falls on the same case as above, and I also took in the fact for the poor souls who used charmander and dungeons are a bit redundant.

Cradily is love :

Well, my scale isn't for everyone, and you should probably change it to suit your needs.

What I use for a grading scale at the end is this: (I'll put your scores in the formula so you can see what the score would be with your scores and my formula)

GRADING
Graphics - 10% (10% of 4 is .4)
Sound - 10% (10% of 6 is .6)
Addictiveness - 35% (35% of 3 is 1.05)
Depth - 20% (20% of 7 is 1.4)
Story - 25% (25% of 5 is 1.25)
Difficulty - 0% (0% of 5 is 0)
Total - 4.7

At this point you can give bonus points, etc (I usually give bonus points for innovation, glitch free gameplay (like I would give it points here, because most of those glitches you will not encounter in normal gameplay) and so on and so forth.

A large part of why the game gets a low grade with my formula and your scores is because I value Addictiveness highly. It's basically the fun score. For example, had you given it a 6 in Addictiveness instead of a 3, it would have raised the score by 1.05 to 5.75 before bonus points.

You should consider adopting a scale but it isn't a requirement at all. I do it myself because a game that was overhyped and overloved (similar to Pokemon in that instance) made me rethink what I valued in a game.

I had played The Last of Us and I couldn't figure out why I didn't like it. So I applied the scale for the first time. Now I use it in all reviews and generally it makes me give less 8s and 9s and more 6s and 7s.

To give you an idea of what I think when I grade something...

0 - (not official score) Garbage
1 - The Worst.
2 - Dreadful
3 - Terrible
4 - Bad
5 - ok
6 - Not Bad
7 - Good
8 - Great
9 - Excellent
10 - Perfect

Mediocre on my scale falls between 5 and 6. The definition of mediocre is "of only moderate quality; not very good." Some synonyms are "ordinary, average, middling, middle-of-the-road". So for me, mediocre would be between ok and Not Bad.

At any rate, I think if this was your first try that it was a great one.

Whoa, this is a very detailed review.

-looks at the long game review-

I don't think that this game aged horribly especially during its time because the Gameboy was a very popular handheld during its prime time. Everyone loved playing Pokemon Red and Blue. I know that you aren't a fan of the Pokemon Gameboy games but you have open your mind to the time it was made and the game technology. Seeing how games and technology has advanced so much, it really is a big improvement. Everyone has their own tastes in games and I understand that. It is very interesting to see that a person hates Pokemon Red which is very rare around these parts.

I do how you backed up on your statements and opinions which I really respect from you. Keep up with the good work on your future game reviews!

Cradily is love : Well legacyme already addressed and made most of the points I was trying to make but I feel like I should still reply so yeah.

The point I was trying to make about the graphics is pretty much exactly what leggy said since you did say the graphics were decent otherwise I think you should've made the score somewhat higher.

I see well it's your opinion so I'm not really going to argue too much here but I didn't think that too many of them were sleepers for the most part I think the soundtracks fit in well but I do respect that you were willing to admit that it might also be partly because of your own taste in music, the same might apply to me.

Pretty much what leggy said about this as well almost no players encountered the glitches when they were first released and gameplay was smooth and despite all it's flaws it is still a fun game (like I said just look at how many who still play it) so I think that could factor into the rating.

Hm my bad here somehow it escaped my mind that you reviewed completely as a standalone '._. Well I didn't really have much to say regarding the story otherwise since I agreed with all your points more or less.

As for the depth granted it was pretty barren in side quests but I don't think it always makes or breaks an RPG. Catching all the Pokemon and battling with friends is something that can still prolong the gameplay a bit. And my point still stands that this is quite the package for a gameboy game. Not to mention despite the balancing issues it still has a nice amount of replay value when using different Pokemon then you did the first.

Yeah I guess that does make sense in a way nevertheless when the game does in a way tell you that picking charmander will make things harder I don't think you should lower the overall rating because of it. Besides there are ways to get around Brock pretty easily using other Pokemon.

It's nice that you're actually backing up your points instead of just some reviewers who write that a game is awesome or terrible but never give a reason. This is still a very impressive review for being your first and I hope to read more so if you ever write another one feel free to summon me.
