Hey guys, Theironhide here with a new review. I remember that someone recommended this game to me back when I made my ps1 Megaman 8 review. Reading his / her comment got me to play a few more Megaman games, including this 1. This is what I'm currently planning: I'm gonna play out and review all main series Megaman Battle Network games chronologically. While I'll play the first 4 games and the sixth game here on Vizzed, I'm planning to play the fifth game in the collection version on my DS to have a bit of verity in my marathon. Well, since I've already played the first 1 out, I'll review that game right now. Lets get this started.
Graphics: 9 I have to say, this game doesn't look bad for GBA standards. The graphics in this game are very colorful and the redesigns for the Netnavi's (previously robot masters) are not bad. The game also gives some creative human designs. 1 Flaw I do have with this game thought, is that it sometimes drags a little, especially with the net. Jacking into the net looks cool at first, but after the twentieth time it gets really old. Other than that, I don't have much to say
Sound: 6 This game is a lot like Sonic Chronicles: the dark brotherhood, when looking at the sound. The sound effects are pretty good. I like many of the sound effects for this game, like the shooting sound and sound effects for perspective chips (even if the beeping at low hp can get annoying, like in many games). However, here comes the elephant in the room: the music. Like in Sonic Chronicles, the music (at least in my opinion) is terrible. The music in this game (for the most part) sounds like it could have been done on the game gear. Most of the music is also pretty forgettable (at least for me). Overall nice sound effects, but the music keeps the rating low.
Addictiveness: 8 I'll be honest with you guys, I didn't expect I would like the game play here so much. It has a unique battle system with a rpg style over world (which makes sense since this game is considered a rpg). I personally really like the battle system. It has you moving in squares and you can use chips you collect though the game either for support, or for attacks that deal more damage than your buster. It can drag a little if you want to progress trough the story and don't know what to do, but other than that my issues are just nitpicks.
Story: 8 Being a rpg, progressing though the story is a thing you really want to do. To summarise the story (without any major spoilers): the story focuses on a boy named Lan and his Navi Megaman. 1 day he has to save his house which got sabotaged by a member of an evil organisation called WWW. After that, more trouble keeps being caused by WWW and Land and Megaman have to stop them. They eventually manage to stop their leader. I won't spoil who their leader is, but you could already guess it's a past Megaman villain due to the fact that most of the Netnavi's are redesigns of previous Megaman robots. I could tell more, but then I would spoil too much.
Depth: 8 Aside from playing out the main story, you can also try to collect all chips from all enemies in the game. You can also fight other Netnavi's to get their chips. Each Netnavi does have a level 2 chip as well, so don't think you're done with fighting them after getting their level 1 chips. It can take a while, so I only recommend this for completionists.
Difficulty: 7 This game can be challenging, but it's not nearly as hard as the platform games. The game was really hard at first for me, but that was before I discovered you can buy hp-ups, power-ups and armors. For those of you who don't know, these are power-ups to increase hp, a certain skill of your buster or to half you damage (with the exception of the element your armor is weak against). When I bought these (and I had a crap ton of money to do so) the game became significantly easier for me. Playing without these power-ups isn't impossible, but you need to be able to dodge extremely well if you want to try this.
Overall I honestly didn't expect to like this game as much as I do. The music is pretty bad, but that doesn't turn me away from the fun battle system, nice and colorful graphics, large collection of chips and fun Netnavi battles. I overall give this game an 8 out of 1, not my favorite game, but certainly a fun experience. |
