Honestly I know very little about it.
I know it's an attack on journalistic integrity (or lack there of in these peoples opinion), but it seems to be focused largely toward a women named Zoe Quinn.
Zoe Quinn is an indie game developer, and SJW (or "feminst" as a lot of people call it)
Basically, she developed a game call depression simulator, or something like that, which got the greenlight on steam.
Then tons of drama ensued, not all of it having to do with the game, and at a point she was stated to have been sleeping with a game journalist who had given the game positive press. This claim was from a blog post by her ex-boyfriend or something, who also made several attacks on her character. This of course led to more drama. Her making accusations, people making accusations at her, and on and on.
Frankly, I tried to follow the issues, but it's been playing out like a high school drama.
Granted it's actually affecting people lives, but the whole thing is just one big mess.
The first time I saw a mention of "Gamergate" I went to check it out
saw Zoe Quinn's name
and went "Nope! Nothing for me here"
I did read one mention however that stated that it was a good concept, that there are a lot of issues with video game journalism, but the fact that the movement is targeting a small indie developer instead of larger companies makes no sense. The term "Poisoning the well" was used.
