I work at a YMCA and I constantly hear, "Oh, thank god that's done," or "Now I have to go exercise... yuck."  I see kids who sit around tvs and computers and no one wants to go outside and run around and get sweaty.

I'm baffled.  Why NOT go outside and be physical?  I've never experienced a time when it didn't feel good and I was happy afterward.  How come people pass up the opportunity to go outside?

Long story short: exercise is strenuous. Strenuous work turns up sweat sooner or later. These people who never want to go out and run around are either too lazy to do so or are worried about getting sweaty, or both.

I think it has to do with the fact that exercise seems very daunting and most people are too lazy to even give it a chance. I think most people also don't try enough exercises to find the one that 'works' for them. They try one exercise, don't like it, and then conclude 'exercise isn't for me'.

I know when I was jogging on the treadmill, I dreaded it. I got minimal happiness from the workout, and I had a hard time motivating myself to actually get up on the thing. Now that I've found my bike and taken my workout outdoors? I can't even begin to explain how happy, stress-free, and good my exercise makes me feel. I look -forward- to it, and it is an absolute 'must' to my day.... even when I'm overwhelmed by my work deadlines.

I think, like most new experiences, people have to first be willing to try it.... even though they think they won't like it. AFTER they've tried it, I'm sure they'd realize it's not as bad as they presumed.

Even yesterday... I was dreading my jog. I hadn't jogged in two weeks because my knee was in severe pain. Not only was I afraid of the pain flaring up, but I just.... didn't want to do the exercise. However, I told myself not to make any excuses, and I went. I quickly realized and remembered that I ENJOYED it. The fresh air, the knowledge that I was doing something to better myself, and the exercise itself was amazing. I was actually sad when I got home.

If more people pushed past their assumptions, I think a lot more people would be happier and fine with exercise.

Lack of physical activity isn't always due to laziness.

People have jobs, kids, families, errands and many other tasks on top of their exercise regimens. It's hard to exercise when you have so many other issues draining you throughout the day both physically and mentally.

Personally I enjoy working out but sometimes due to having many things to do throughout the day like working late and having to rise up early to do stuff I just can't get a good nights sleep and I am just too tired and drained to work out.

It's certainly true that sometimes true that schedule an create an issue with regular exercise regimens,
and that laziness can play a huge factor in creating a lack of motivation as well.
However, I think part of it's attitude as well
Exercise is something that is looked at by society, at least here in America, as something you force yourself to do
It's regarded as a chore to receive a result, rather than a positive activity in and of itself
You go to the gym not because you like it there, but to "get in shape"
As after school special as it sounds, attitude and expectations play a large part in coloring our experiences

Personally, I exercise mostly for personal enjoyment.
I've never really needed to, but it's something I've always had a positive view on.
Plus exercise releases endorphin's and combats depression, as well as keeping you healthier in general.
If I have the time, I do it. If I don't, I sure see if I can make time.
If nothing else, I would run around campus between classes.

baileyface544 :  I was thinking something along these lines earlier.  With my job it's almost impossible to 'find time' to exercise... however, it was important enough to me that I MADE time.  Instead of spending 90 minutes on the treadmill and then showering... I now bike to work.  It takes that same hour to bike to work and back home, but instead I'm losing no time in my day..... because I'd just be driving to work and back in that time anyways.  I also try to use small hand weights while I'm reading what I wrote.  Again, I lose no time, and I get exercise while I have the chance.  During my lunch break, I sometimes, walk up and down the stairs in our building while I eat something.

I've been doing all of this for about two months, and as you've mentioned... the emotional results are phenomenal. I've never felt so happy and stress free... and yet I have some of the heaviest and hardest deadlines of my grown life.

Singelli : Those are some excellent tips to work exercise into a busy schedule.
I own a bike myself, and not only does it help keep you active, but you save a lot on gas.
The weights while reading is something that has never occurred to me, but it's an excellent idea
I actually have a set of hand weights, and it's something I think I'll work into my daily habits.
And I'm glad it's helped keep you centered. It's amazing what psychical activity can do for you.
I started jogging some years ago when I was going through a real bad depression, and it really helped me through
Since then, it's a habit I've never let go.
Recently it's even been helping me get over the nicotine addiction I stupidly picked up after high school.
Any time I crave a cigarette, I hop on my bike, or go to the gym, or just jog if that's all I can do.
I tell you, I've never felt healthier and happier in my life.

Edit: Had to fix the spelling on a couple words. Funny when you misspell a word, but you spell it right for a different word, and it doesn't pop up on spell check

I think it's because it's boring.

At least, that's the impression I got with the two examples you provided.

Personally, exercising is a drag when you're doing all the mechanical stuff with exercise equipment, or with an instructor that resembles the stereotypical middle school gym teacher that yells at everyone. (I'm just joking about the gym teachers yelling at people, but it can be a factor for children.) Of course, there's always fun ways to get physical activities, such as sports or something. However, I think two of the main reasons that some kids don't want to play sports is because: they don't like the people they're playing with/have no one to play with and/or they suck at it.

I suppose another thing could be environmental. I hear some cities are polluted, yeah? Wouldn't want to breathe in all that toxic.

It's because some people get a kick out of exercising while other do not. It has to do with how our bodies work. When you achieve a goal, your brain rewards you with a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine gives you that feeling of accomplishment you get when you do something like finish a difficult game. Eating, Exercise and many other things give you dopamine.
So, I've got that out of the way. So about exercising, some people have a gene where you don't get much dopamine from exercise. Which is why some people don't find exercising fun. Please take this with a grain of salt as I am not an expert on this.
Also, this is the video where I got my facts from.

marxzero's response is the one I like the most but everyone is pretty on point. The question was why don't people enjoy exercise? We should start by asking the question, Why do some people do not mind heading to the gym every week, 5 days out of the week, and looking good always?

The answer can very well be marxzero's response. People just do not have enough time. Thank goodness I don't have any kids begging for hot cheetos and toys. If I had a full time job, a family, a dog, blah blah blah then it is quite feasible to put a couple all in one machines in the house plus a treadmill. However I think the answer is deeper than just this. It isn't simply because people are just lazy or preoccupied with other stuff.

It comes down to human psychology. We like to do things we WANT to do but we also have to ENJOY it at the same time. We like to spend time sitting on our asses playing LoL or COD for hours on end but like others said, exercising is tiring, strenuous. Who would want to trade nights of watching The Walking Dead and spending time with the gf eating cupcakes and pizza for at least an hour at the gym? Sounds quite dumb to me. Except it isn't. It is all about what we want. If we want it enough, there will be time for it. Amorous copulation takes time and yet people wait for their kids to sleep to do it for 30 minutes or whatever. If you want it enough you will make time for it and that is my hypothesis. By that I do not mean they like going to the gym so they can look sexy for the opposite sex. Yeah that was my motivation and still apart of the motivation but people who truly like going to the gym actually want to and enjoy the experience overall. They are not afraid of getting tired. Baileyface says it is a chore for people to do it. For the ones who enjoys It is rewarding to feel tired like that to them. They don't go to check out the ladies or the aholes (lets' admit it there's sooo many jerks, like me, at the gym), They are going because they like it and just want to do it every day. Everything else, the body, the eye candy, anything else is just a bonus. Needless to say going to the gym makes these people happy and that is why I go now.

I used to give myself reasons like oh you just ate 2 hours ago or I think I need to poop or I look too fat. I can't believe I gave myself those excuses lmao. Looking back I realized in the beginning I did not want to do anything at the gym let alone going there. I had to force myself. Everytime I gave myself some bs reason, I tell myself no that excuse sucks. Now I love it because it is so damn rewarding.

Onwards and upwards,
