Review for E.T.
Holy crap this is the biggest thing I've ever seen. This is widely considered to be the WORST game in existence. I thought to myself, "oh please it can't be that bad." I was wrong. It IS that bad. If not worse!

I know this is an Atari 2600 and it is a primitive console but even that can pull off some nice looks but this...this is just disgraceful! It almost made my eyes want to vomit blood just by looking at it. And E.T doesn't even look like E.T, even if it's an Atari console!!!

I wish I could rate this lower, I really wish I can rate this lower, but I can't. This has to be the worst sounding game I've ever played! The theme does not translate well into an Atari console. There isn't even any music other than the sounds of footsteps or falling! The sound can cause ear aches it's that annoying!

It's addictive all right...addictive to see how many things these people did wrong with this game! I mean, it's amazing how virtually unplayable this game is. I can't even call it a game! Sometimes I think the CIA uses this to torment terrorists! It's that bad.

I'm not even sure I can even say anything about the depth except, wow there is pretty much nothing to do and I feel like you can die pretty damn easily.

This game is hard alright...hard to control, hard to imagine why would anyone create this monstrosity, hard to believe you are even playing it other than you heard everyone saying that it's the worst game ever and you should play other games that will torture you (in a good way) like a majority of bullet hell games, Contra, Metroid, heck, even SUPERMAN 64 is better than this!

This is easily the worst game I've ever played. I'm not exaggerating either. It's ugly, it's sound is annoying, it's unplayable, it's disgusting to the soul, and it's amazing that the game industry even survived after this thing contributed to the collapse of 1983! I'm glad to have been born in the 90s so I wouldn't have to see the gaming industry (or Gamindustri in Hyperdimension Neptunia) fall apart. See?! This game is so bad I've thought of other more better games than this travesty. Why did I even play this again?! They should have given the customers refunds and apologies for letting kids in the 80s buy this. And the biggest problem I have is this could've had the potential to either be as bright and shiny as the movie or even outshine it! After all, this was released when the hype of the movie was huge. I've seen the movie as a kid and I completely understand where these people are coming from when they say it's one of the greatest movies of all time (it's no Citizen Kane according to others but whatever). What matters is this game really is the Citizen Kane of bad games. Why am I even comparing a good movie to this?! Just...don't play this game. It's for your health and overall sanity.

You. Complain that the game has little music, even though most atari 2600 games didn't have any music at all.

Although the graphics are simple, it is still good enough that you can tell what things are.

On my personal experience, i find the controlles to be quite good, even exeptional, for what is is.



I came into this game with the same mindset, but came out with two different ones. What happened?

ninjacat64 : I know there's no music In game. Like I said, I was referring to how the movie's theme translated to the Atari 2600 and it was apparent that it didn't translate well to the console. This also took into account my experience with it. Fine people can use the controls well, but from when I used it I didn't enjoy using them.

Also I came into this game knowing it's reputation and I completely understood why it's so hated.

gamerforlifeforever2 : Yes, the game is pretty bad. But is it the worst game ever? I have to respectfully disagree on that one. I think that the Action 52 compilation for the NES is way worse than E.T. That thing is just loaded with games with bad design, bad graphics,and horrid game play. And that's the games that actually work. There's a good few on the cart that just crash out after the title screen or just start glitching out like the NES is having a seizure. I pity the poor people who paid 200 bucks for that turkey back in the day. They must be kicking themselves pretty hard right now.


On a side note, I bought my copy of E.T brand new from the electronics department at Zellers for $1.99. Not a bad price to pay for a mediocre at best game, don't you think?

This is a good review, but it was more of a rant than a review. I think you could've went a little more in-depth with most of the categories.

Well I know this is an old review, but I have to say that this game is not nearly as bad as everyone says it is. Honestly I feel like a lot of most of the hatred that most people feel for this game when playing it is because of all the folks like AVGN who shout how horrible it is. I think those rants get in our heads and make us biased against it.

This was actually one of my first games, and may well have been my first. I personally find it to be much better than some other games that have slipped under the hate radar somehow like Dark Castle and Slaughter Sport. Seriously this game is a solid 3-4 times better than those two, and better than Another World in my opinion as well. Maybe I just feel this way because I grew up during this time and can appreciate that the game runs at all, because I've actually paid for games on the Genesis and NES that literally did not get past the start screen, or play beyond the first level. At any rate, this is far from the worst of all time I'd say. But I can respect an opinion.

    I totally remember playing this when it first came out. You have to understand how big of a movie E.T. was too. At the time it was like the highest grossing film ever I think. Everyone went to see it. Thankfully though, my neighbor and best friend at the time got it instead of me. We didn't hate it. But it did get boring pretty fast and it wasn't long before we were playing something else. At the time though, there were a LOT of really terrible Atari games so by comparison, at least at the time, it didn't really stand out as the 'worst ever' like so many have claimed. The market was already flooded with crappy games at the time so I don't think it had as much to do with the crash as some people say either. It was like guys who never played games before just threw anything out there and figured kids were too dumb to care. Like flashing lights were all we needed. lol. I could be wrong, but that was my impression at the time. There would be shopping carts full of cartridges at the store all marked down to like 2 dollars a piece. If you got three, maybe one would be good.

Ferdinand : Well I wasn't born in that era but I can easily understand the movie's hype mainly because I saw it either in the late 90s or early 2000s. Doesn't excuse the problems this game had.

Man, I am REALLY curious to try this game to see if it is THAT bad.

Otherwise, since it is so terrible, I guess it was expected to have such a short review. Nevertheless, if it applies to you, it would have been good to compare ET to other Atari games to show how terribly inferior it is. For example, the few Star Wars games that were on the console at least sounded like the game.

This game often gets a bad rap of being "the worst game of all time" but that's really not the case. This is just overhyped because of Youtube personalities and their videos.

To be honest, this isn't even the worst game on the CONSOLE let alone the worst game ever. Those atari "porn" games and PacMan for the 2600 to name a few ARE A LOT WORSE.

Is ET for 2600 great? Certainly not, but it's also not the worst game ever. I would give it a solid "meh"

Jordanv78 : Is it really Youtube hype? From the critics I read of the game, it was rushed for the Holiday, was not even tested so it could hit the shelves quickly.

janus : I know it was rushed to a certain extent, but that was not uncommon for Atari games. I mean heck, PacMan for the console was coded by one guy and finished within days.

ET has some annoying quirks, sure, but it's still overhyped due to the attention that some popular YouTubers gave it. Well that and the fact that it's unjustly blamed for single handedly brining the gaming crash of the 80's even though it was not the only culprit. The REALY culprit was that there was no quality control with Atari games. ANYONE could and DID develop all sorts of nondescript titles for the console.
