Recently I have been taking notice of all these teen anti smoking commercials and here is just my opinion on the commercials and my views toward the topic. Im a strong believer in taking personal responsibility for your actions instead of blaming another person or another external force with that said I dont think its right to practically blame famous people(of the correct age to be smoking) for your (parents) inability to keep there teens from smoking. Further more I find it amusing that people waste money on these commercials knowing full well at the end of the day it all boils down to up bringing and personal preferance in your chioce to smoke or not. I also find it amusing on how these anti teen smoking commericals "pass the buck" by blaming everyone and anything for teens smoking besides the ones at fult the teens. Im just gonna stop my little rant because I want to hear how other people feel on the subject.

I think I'm probably biased towards answering this since I started smoking early in my teens but I also think I'm a good point of view seeing as I watched similar commercials as the habit grew. I don't know if I think they're completely pointless, maybe they deter some people but from what I've seen they're just even more argument for non-smokers. I've never had a friend that smokes turn to me and say they were quitting because lolcatpiss or whatever. Though I'm sure it's probably helped teens that haven't started think it's a gross thing and that they shouldn't pick up the habit, which is good it's an awful habit that is a literal waste of money.

I think the main point in those commercials is to scare non-smokers not convince people who already smoke. People will tell you you need to quit all the time but it's not like a commercial is going to convince you anymore than your friends or family. All that being said I'm somewhat getting off topic, I think the commercials are dumb but mostly for the scare tactic they're trying to pull. I appreciate them attempting to educate the uneducated but I think they're going about it a bit extremely. Also, I think the metaphors they use are bad and they should feel bad. Overall a good idea however.

You're way off.  Kids are absolutely, positively affected by images and what they see on TV.  I keep hearing about 8 year olds who safely drive cars because they saw it on tv or they played the video game.  If you take away the images of people smoking and remove it from video games and entertainment, it is not in front of kids all the time.  And smoking goes down.

There's billions of dollars that show advertising works.  That's why everyone knows Pepsi as a beer and very few people know Faygo Cola.

Also, kids do what they see their parents do.  U. Washington put up a study that shows kids who's parents smoke are over twice as likely to pick up smoking.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/09/050929082408.htm

People are responsible for their actions but young children learn from someone.  Their parents are teacher and show them what's right and wrong.  If they watch their parents smoke, they learn smoking is acceptable.  If they don't see their parents smoke or their parents actively discourage it, the kids learn that is the acceptable way.

If the commercial saves a few hundred kids all the money and health they lose on cigarettes, that's good.

Not seen these adverts.
I have seen similar anti smoking adds etc here, but not just focused on one demographic.
Considering the fact our tax pays for free healthcare, I approve of them airing the adverts. Whats the saying, the prevention is better than the cure.
Adverts, parents, friends etc all have an effect on a persons development. Focusing only on one is a critical mistake.
Like if you quit smoking. You might think that the savings, or the health benefits would trump all. But if you're friends and family are smoking around you, or offering you ciggs, it becomes difficult to stay off them.
Thats not as much of a problem here as it used to be, smoking in public places is illegal now so if you want to avoid it, its a deal easier.

I find these commercials just show that it's bad for them and everyone and that they need to quit now. It seems to have worked, as nowhere near as many teens smoke today as they did only just 10 years ago.
The sooner teens quit the better. The sooner they start the worse off they are. These ads have clearly had a positive impact on society.

I'm totally with warmaker on this. Kids are far too immerse in media not to be affected by it. I mean, many kids know more about famous youtubers than they do about actors.  I say give them something shocking to watch... it will stick with them.  The dangers are real, so they should feel real.

This reminds me a little about the 'no texting while driving campaign'.  I always thought the commercials were dumb because teens wouldn't care and would just keep on doing it. However, every time our school held a program over the issue, kids came back terrified and speaking against it.  Even parents would tell me that their children would chide them for using their phones while driving.

They're a bit on the ridiculous side, but I do believe that they may help. The teen ones, anyway. 1 in 5 deaths are because of cigarettes. If this helps lower that rate, I'm all for it. But I can't deny: the commercials with the older smokers creep me the heck out. I don't smoke, I shouldn't have to watch that.

It's a shame our tax money goes towards the war on drugs in general, but that's a different topic. When it comes down to it, if it's not allowed, teens are more likely to do it, it's so easy to get cigarettes, it's not even funny, and 48 states allow minors to smoke anyways, so why tell you to do something you're allowed to do. In all, no these commercials are useless, they don't deter me from lighting a cigarette every once in a while honestly...

ANTI SMOKING COMMERCIALS ARE A FARCE!!!...to put it mildly. I only say this because what is the actual point? We never really get to know in all honesty as they are advertising based solely on generalization. "Don't smoke, because cancer, or emphysema." While these things may be a result in smoking we are always for some reason failed to be educated what smoking actually is. Its like listening to those ridiculous political commercials on the radio when you hear them talk about the politician but, don't get to know the said politician really. Basically what have here is the whole dog chasing its tail syndrome or classically as the line from this song went "what we got here...is a failure to communicate." Communication is one of our number one abilities in life and when it is misrepresented we see only maybe a picture and not perhaps the big picture. To say the least it would be nice to know and I mean this as it could be a recommendation, what should the do's and don'ts be? There are no instructions to life however as an individual at least maybe I can guide someone to enable them to do one thing and that is, make your own choice.
