In this review, I'm going to go to the game that made me fall in love with the Pac-Man persona, and ironically enough, he wasn't even the main character. The game I'm going to review is Ms. Pac-Man for the Sega Genesis. This is one of the early games that brought the arcade style of game to the home console for the public to enjoy. It was one of my first games I've ever owned as well, so let's get right to it, and make a review of an arcade game.
Difficulty: 6
The difficulty can be set before you play with a traditional Easy, Medium, Hard. But even if you pick an Easy mode, the game will get progressively harder and harder as you go through the game. The mazes you go through each level will get more confusing and you will have to think of ways to lure the ghosts away from you and a bunch of other plans depending if you want to get an impressive high score as well, since this is still an arcade game.
Depth: 4
When you break it down, you could play this game for a long time if you're good enough. It isn't really a long game, if you really think about it. After a while, they will run out of mazes, and the cycle will restart or they will do the same one over and over until you get a game over. Once again, it's an Arcade game, and the better you do, the better your score will be, and that's the whole point of the game. Not much to expect.
Story: N/A
There is no story about the game since you're focusing on a high score for ultimate bragging rights, but there is a few cutscenes between Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man and how they met and how they get along. Eventually, Pac-Man Jr. comes into play if you can get that far into the game as well. Besides the few scenes, you aren't really treated into a story of eating the dots, sometimes fruit, and avoiding the ghosts for no logical reason.
Addictiveness: 8
I can't explain how much I love this game, and how many times I played this game, in a row, even. You can probably play this game for hours for the pretty colors and the signature "waka waka" thing. It might be my nostalgia talking here, so this might not be as great of a factor to you, since it is an old arcade game in a console. It can become boring to the normal person after a while, so I won't blame you if you do decide to put it down after the first or second game over. It doesn't really change too much. It can get tiresome.
Sound: 6
There isn't much of the sound department besides the jingle going into the first maze, and just silence besides "waka waka" sounds of eating the pallets and the ghosts hovering their way towards you. I'm not too big on this category, so this one won't go too far beyond the sound effects, which are pretty good.
Graphics: 7
The graphics for 16 bit Sega Genesis standards are pretty okay. Nothing you are going to be wow'd for since it's an older type of game, so it's alright for what it's worth in the early, mid 90s game. I enjoy the looks for the pallet changes for each maze, and the ghosts/Ms Pac Man are pretty to look at as well. Not much to complain about for what they did with this area here.
Overall: 8.3
Overall, it's a pretty decent game for what it's worth. It's a simple, fun game for the smallest tyke, and the grown ups as well, since the rating is quite literally Kids to Adults. Not much for the naked eye, but it can be a bundle of fun for the whole family, and for 2 Player mode as well! If you want to check this out, you can have a fun time for a little bit of a time waster. Enjoy the game! I know I did.
