Now if you don't know about a month ago (during e3) Nintendo announced something called Amiibo.

Here's a link to the official announcement trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw1e8nv6YwU

But in case you were too lazy (or just couldn't watch it for whatever reason) it's basically figurines similar to those used in games like
Disney Infinity and Skylanders of Nintendo characters that will be usable in various Nintendo games both upcoming games and even games that are already out like Mario Kart 8 having different uses in different games and I got to say I actually thought it sounds pretty cool.

At first I was sceptical thinking you might have to buy certain figurines to unlock certain characters but that is apparently not the case instead the figurines basically have their own stats and they level up when being used and gain different attributes when you use them in games and it seems you can even face of against them and they will learn from you, making them supposedly more challenging then the regular AI. It is also said that each Amiibo will be different compared to other ones so if you have 2 Link figures they could turn out differently. This seems a lot cooler to me then something like the figurines in Skylanders and Disney Infinity which IMO are not really needed. So I'm actually looking forward to the release of these as they are going to be released alongside the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. They're also supposedly going to become usable for the 3ds at some point too.

So what do you think about this are you excited? Do you think it's a bad idea? Or do you just don't care? I'm interested to hear your opinions.

Also sorry if there's already been a thread on this as it was a while ago since it was announced.

It looks like it could work in the video but I don't think it's going to become that popular in the long run. If the price is decent, it might become succesful, but if it's expensive, it might not be a good idea.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw that you can use Amiibo for Mario Kart 8 was..

" So now I can use Link to race with ? "

I doubt it but it would be kind of cool and wonky at the same time but that's just what I think.

When I first saw this on E3 I was hoping they would already have an Greninja figure. It only looks like they the figures for most of the default characters, maybe I missed an detail or two or maybe even an update. I wouldn't mind buying an Kirby or Pikachu figure while I wait for Greninja.

I feel as if this will be cool, but difficult to implement. I originally saw this, and thought it would be some Skylanders BS, but it seems to be really nice. I hope they implement this well, and that it does not fail, but this will definitely be rather challenging. I just hope that they do not make you buy a different figure for each game, and that the figure is fully universal. I also hope for many different characters, and not just the usual set of Smash Bros-esque characters.

It's a really cool idea and all, but I can't help but think of it as gimmicky. I'll probably only get a couple for the sake of having a figurine, but that's about it. I've never been a fan of figurines in general because it feels like such a money sucker. I spend enough money on the games as it is, so why should I really want to spend more for an extra feature?

I like the idea of amiibo. Shows that Nintendo is still trying new things instead of the "Madden" disease games have now. It's kinda cool to use during games (Am I the only one who wants Kirby in MK8? XD) The only problem I have with it is that what if it is magnet-like? If you stack a DS/DSI on 3ds, it messes up the 3ds by having a black screen until the DS is separated.  It could be like this on the Wii U gamepad/3ds if they port it. It looks like the gamepad is the "portal of power" for amiibos, so it could be a problem.

3DKirbiiU : Yeah I agree and I'm quite interested on what it's going to do in Mario Kart 8 or just any game except smash bros really, also I think it's a scan type of thing where you just scan it in and don't have to keep the figurine on it.

Off topic: Why haven't you responded to us in the netplay tournament thread? We're supposed to be facing you this week
