So basically I have just started my A-levels and chose Psychology for a few reasons. One reason being I wish to become a lawyer and want to be able to know what people are thinking or feeling by their expressions and I want to understand the human mind. The main reason, however, is because I have a lot of friends who suffer from various "mental illnesses" some are like me in them however some have ones which I don't and I have no understanding of them. Anyway reasons for me taking psychology aside. Is psychological testing on humans a good thing? and Should psychological testing on humans be permitted? DISCUSS! GOGOGO!

I say yes, as long as that person agrees to it. If you have written permission from that person, I believe that you should be aloud to perform tests on them.

Yes but only if that person gives their consent.  I sometimes worry we are going to test everybody and psychologist will try to find things wrong with everybody. For example under DSMV tantrums can be considered a mental illness. I also have Autism and sometimes I feel like they are not fair to those of us on the spectrum. For example, sometimes they try to say we are mental when Autism is neurological.

I also think of that horror story I ready earlier in the year were a New England girl was taken away from her parents because one psychologist said she we as depressed and put into an institution. Thankfully her parents and family doctor fought and last month she was allowed to go home

This is why testing needs to be highly regulated and only done if the person consents

Expnightfire :

Yes. It shouldn't be against a person's consent if they're over 18, but yes. It would be greatly beneficial to the field.

From what I can remember from my psychology studies, the person taking part in psychological research should firstly be doing it from their own will and they should also have the permission to withdraw at any given time during the research. All the material regarding the research should also be kept secret and disposed of when they are no more needed. When these terms are met and only then,  I think that it would help the field of psychology a lot.

Psychological testing is allowed to be used if there is a consent form stating the risks, precautions, and what is expected. The important part is the subjects or participants and you have to think of them before testing them. It's pretty much on what sillysoul is saying. Participants have free will due to previous psychological tests that involve with harm, cluelessness, and lack of freedom. That is why we have research laws in order to prevent more tests from the tester to abuse control over the participant(s). It's pretty much like an exchange to an agreement between the tester and participant(s).

Expnightfire : Yes, it will also save you a fair bit of money whether you become a barrister or solicitor, you would have to pay for professional opinions to help you build your case then fees for them to say it in court, if you know the basics you can do the first bit your self.
From the testee's point of view it should be fine, it is only really needed when they try to raise a defence of automatism or insanity and then it would be of their own accord anyway.

Btw, your post sounds strangely like my self, I also took psychology and want to be a lawyer (waiting for my results and going to uni in September), did you by any chance take business and law as well? PM me if you need some help with psychology (if you are doing spec b) because I remember most of it.
