Assume you are the only one on the road at night. The road doesn't go by any houses that you know of, but there is the occasional gas station or small business. You are on your way home from work. On your way home, you notice there is an old man on the side of the road that looks like he needs a ride. He is in loose, worn, and in some places, torn clothing. He looks worried or nervous. Would you stop and give the man a ride? Would you stop to understand the situation? Would you keep going? None of these are wrong answers, but I am curious as to how everyone would handle this situation.
Mods: I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put this thread. If there is a better place then by all means please move this thread.

To be honest, I'd never stop... better be safe than sorry. I might stop by in a police station though, then I'd tell them someone needs help along the road (not an accident).

I never let any strangers inside my car.

I don't have a car but I would stop and ask what the problem is maybe but I wouldn't let him into my car. You never know what people can do.

i would ask the man what he needs and a few more questions. I hate scam artists. so when a person looks beat down and everything, i try to make sure that they aren't messing with my head. there's already been a scam artist pretending to be a old, frail woman by day. then a normal woman with a white fleece jacket at night. |

A few years ago I might have stopped and helped.  Now?  Nope.  People are crazy.  No one knows what's going on and I would assume the worst.  I would call his location and condition in to the police and let them deal with it.  I'm a grown man but I now have a wife, a kid, and I realize I'm not nearly as invincible as I thought I was.  I don't need to take unnecessary risks to help someone.  He made it this far in life so he's probably a survivor.  I think he'll be okay.

I, however, am planning on keeping my own life going as long as possible.  It does not include stopping to pick up strangers and help.  I'm a helpful person but that position, alone, at night, limited visibility with no one else around?  That seems too risky.  if it were an old man on a hiking trail in a national park and it's daytime and most people in that park are there for recreational activities?  The story changes.

Your scenario?  Nope.  I'm going to keep things moving.

I have no idea who this man is, who knows, he might even be a hitman out to get me, so I will leave him on the side of the road, but it would call like the police to come and get him and see if he is all okay.

I would let him in, give him some food and water and drop him off at the nearest hotel if has money, or leave him at a safe place that he can sleep in, like a park or beach, it's sad that I can't help him as much as I wanted though.

I think, unfortunately, that today's society makes motions of kindness a hard thing to do.  So many people are absolutely insane now, that you're likely going to put yourself at risk when helping someone else.  I'd definitely want to help a person, but I'd be hard pressed to actually do so.  I think the risk is only increased given my gender versus the man's.  I might pull over many yards ahead and call the police or a roadside service, at the very least.

That being said, I HAVE helped men stranded on the road before.  However, I only did so after having a serious talk with God, and because I felt led to help those people.  LOL  Sometimes God leads you to do things you wouldn't normally do, and He always has a purpose when He does.  If God is urging me to do it, then I can be assured of my safety.

Normally, my kind side would stop and invite him to give him a lift to the closest area of civilization or where he needs to go. Although, today's society makes me kinda give me second thoughts about this situation, and I might just keep going.
